15.01.2022 I write this as a spiritual father not a novice just having entered the ministry looking to establish my name or ministry but as a person who loves God, people ...and His Church and having seen things come and go within the worldwide Church and having made that commitment that I am a builder with the Lord Jesus and of His Church no matter how long it takes and whatever it takes. I also am saddened by the recent announcement of a moral failing of a prominent leader and also probably more saddened by the public and private ruthless responses of many who call themselves Christians, yet I am extremely blessed and heartened by the many who have expressed love and support of this family and church. Here’s some of my thoughts, whilst not the most articulate but heartfelt in looking at the one receiving discipline and those having to give it. I’m not perfect, in fact I’m pretty rough around the edges, having no pretence or claim to fame but I believe this will help those who battle and struggle with such issues as we see and are experiencing in our lifetime. Being a church leader is not the easiest calling in the world where you are judged for everything, if you grow the church and if you don’t, if you dress well and if you don’t, what car you drive, what house you live in, what your spouse looks like, every decision you make or don’t make is judged and weighed up whether fairly or unfairly. Social media has magnified many things and made a lot of things really unpleasant with detractors who have little or no fruit at all in their lives but because they appear the underdog and are the loudest are often the most applauded. This has put a pressure on most ministries and churches where lies and evil inaccuracies can be spread or be posted without any fact-check which is a really draining thing on most Christian workers and brings an emotional exhaustion and sometimes depression with it. It is often this exhaustion and depression that leads people into sins of the flesh. Having to defend against those who call themselves Christians with the tirade of insults and accusations is perhaps the most tiring of all. The fact that one can be judged by those who say they are believers without doing the Biblical face to face discussion is perhaps one of the greatest evils of our time especially the year 2020. 2020 has seen the best of Christian love and the worst of Christian behaviour. Then there is the ever diminishing real friendship circle the longer that you are in the ministry which most pastors have to contend with and it is probably the hardest pressure of all and I surmise this was also the case in the recent issue whilst not excusing any behaviour at all. I have seen non-church-going and not-yet-saved long time friends act with a greater sense of love and loyalty with no hidden agendas than many long time ministry friends who eventually become mere acquaintances. This is perhaps the most draining of all to know that what you thought was real Christianity was just perhaps a religious ideal with regards to covenant friendships. I suspect it is the legalistic faith drive to perform that causes people to relate to you differently depending on the size of the church or ministry not understanding the grace of God. We live in a day and time where people are judged not by the size of their hearts but the size of their ministry or business. This above statements do not suppose that all behaviour of all ministers is perfect but these are generally truthful statements. Let me also qualify that I have the most amazing family, friends and people around me who are the salt of the earth, loyal and loving all around the world particularly here in Australia who have my heart as I have theirs which is most energising. The story can go on and on, but let me ask you as a reader that when you hear of failings of churches and leaders not to rejoice or respond with I told you so, he/they deserve it, but weep with compassion and love and let grace come out of your mouth and heart believing God for a total restoration because that’s what the Gospel of Christ is all about. Let your heart cry be as I was always taught as a young Christian... there for the Grace of God go I The next part is with those who have to give out discipline and often have to make it public and cop the abuse. Let me just say that in most cases there were ongoing discussions that led to the the public announcement so don’t be quick to judge those leaders who have the best intentions of the church and leader at heart. I have also experienced and seen through the years that a lifeline has been given to many as a way of escape to start again and again but they violate that trust over and over and try to subvert the love and grace given them. Personally as a leader I would like to shout out to people and paste it all over social media and say ......this is the actual truth, what you’ve heard is a lie, here is the proof, this is why we made that decision...., but I just cannot, my conscience doesn’t allow me to, my walk before the Lord Jesus is too sacred and doesn’t allow me to for the sake of the Gospel which is not about how good I look before men but rather what I look like before God. We are living in a day with tremendous deception where people lie and beguile in one sentence and Praise the Lord and tell you how much they love you with with the next breath or text. I have been with people who say you’re the best but to others he’s just a jerk and he hurt me. Many times its the people that have been shown the most grace and love that are the ones with the knives out ready to push it into your back as you embrace them. Here’s my counsel on this.....time will tell so don’t be quick to judge the intention of any leader who has to stand strong and make certain difficult decisions and judgements but rather back those leaders who may be a bit rough around the edges because we need stronger leaders in this day and time as there seems to be a real despising of strong leadership within the Church in these days. Don’t look for the smooth talker and ever so polished pretender where butter would never melt in their mouth who care only about their ministry but look for those that are real and authentic who have the best interests of the Church at heart. I have so much more to say but let’s just live our lives for the Gospel and love each other, stop the anger, the judgement and criticism, stand with leaders who have to make the difficult calls and love those who have fallen and stand with those who have taken ownership of their sin and repented. Live in Grace, love and mercy and you will always win because the Word tells us that Mercy triumphs over judgement. BE A BUILDER NOT A BREAKER, BE A GIVER NOT A TAKER.
