20.01.2022 The impact of #COVID19 isolation on mental health is real. Those of us who've survived #stroke with #disability have had to adjust to this isolation, fear & lack of direction before. We had to create a new life without work, construct new meaning, routines & goals. Some tips: 1) remember I'm #StillMe 2) create a 'command centre' where you #control the admin of life ... 3) plan the next day in the evening before & in chunks that include meals/exercise/leisure/work/meditation, yoga, or mindfulness 4) If the day is challenging it's ok to have a cry 5) keep a calendar in your command centre so you don't lose track of days 6) acknowledge when you're doing well, surviving, learning something new, 7) keep contact with friends, family, neighbours 8) keep a daily journal (written or as voice memos on your phone) to see progress and acknowledge feelings 9) seek professional help if your mental health falters 10) be kind to yourself and others 11) focus on what you can do not on what you can't 12) remember there's a lot that's in your control See more

14.01.2022 Having difficulty balancing energy with goals and wishes. OnbTwitter tonight one of my hero survivors from the UK asked what were my greatest achievements after stroke. This is what I said Amazing achievements #ssd #stillme Decided to fight for a life stolen... Worked hard to sit, stand, walk, swallow, speak Set and achieved goals Cried & sobbed when I needed to Laughed & kept a sense of humor Valued great health professionals Accepted I couldn't be a CEO anymore Started a blog http://Purezeal.com.au Not seeking sympathy or empathy, just sharing my friends

11.01.2022 #NoToPrivateACATs In case you missed it - which you probably did, because the government buried the announcement 30 hrs before Christmas - ACATs are being privatised from April 2021. This is the workforce that assesses #agedcare needs. #agedcarerc #auspol The @LNP govt is replacing ACAT teams of highly skilled, #publicly employed and #accountable geriatricians, nurses, allied health profs. who assess whether YOUR family member can get aged care in the home or an aged care fac...ility with private/for profit companies! Until 2021 the ACATs remain as 'the gatekeeper' and facilitator for access to care your family member needs. They will be replaced by new teams (possibly inexperienced or from the insurance industry as per Centrelink contractors) who will certainly have 'targets' and 'profit incentives' that current teams don't have. Current ACAT teams assess on need, not for the profits of their employer. The new teams will & their boss may be ALSO the aged care provider! Haven't we already done enough bad things to older Australians? See more

07.01.2022 When I did my initial rehab I had some of the same issues many others experience with the lift of my affected foot and the coordination of my gait. Despite all the specific exercises my rehab physician said 'walk and keep walking' was best. We recently moved to the country and the footpaths are good. I've walked 750m (around the block) for the last 3 days and today I did a 900m circuit. Tired but pleased I'm building up stamina!

07.01.2022 After experiencing stroke most of us question our identity, what the future will hold, what we’ll still be able to do and our relationships with others. Part of who we are includes our interests and how we like to spend leisure time. It’s important that you don’t ‘give up’ doing your favourite things after your stroke. If you are intoo adventure sports this might present more challenges than if you’re into art-house movies, but many obstacles can be lessened with some help, i...magination and planning. You may have mobility issues, lack transport, have thinking or planning problems, low income or communication difficulties, but with help and support you can often find a way of enjoying the stuff you used to do BS (before stroke).
