20.01.2022 VALUE OF ART JOURNALS Interesting conversation with group members yesterday. When downsizing, what to value and what to discard? What is the value of making art when we don’t want to accumulate? Briefly, some of the value of the process of an art journal (or at least playful pages). . New learning the challenge and satisfaction of new skills, new tools and medium.... . Active Mindfulness the process of making art can emulate many of the characteristics of mindfulness, taking the mind to a relaxed but alert place, achieving flow, working in the less logical part of the brain to be simply in the moment, playing for the joy of it (Not to mention the benefit to the brain for cognitive dexterity). .A new language. We all have stories to tell. Reflecting on our lives and memories, making art journals is a unique opportunity to share those stories and give them an images with can be literal, with humor, metaphor, color combined with photographs, words and other forms of expression. .The company of others in a group, creating, encouraging, appreciating, laughing. Many friendships have developed through creative groups, quilting circles, pottery classes and so on. My mother was a potter. After years of making and selling, she found it was the friendships that had longest value. For myself, after years of printing and painting, I’ve kept art mostly for its personal meaning than technical value. Of most value is knowledge that has been gathered and the memories, stories and friendships formed over the creative table.

12.01.2022 Now the isolation restrictions have lifted I’m babysitting again. I saw a lot of Austin in the last week. This watercolour celebrates the memory of the beautiful star socks. Within hours one had gone to sock heaven, or wherever they go when they disappear. Along with a shoe. An hour and a half of my life that I’ll never get back was spent looking for the shoe. RIP sock and shoe. And Anna, if you read this, you’ve probably found the little slice taken out of his ...t-shirt. I’m sorry. He had the scissors for a minute before I realized. In the coming week, a new expressive arts group will be starting in the Fig Tree Pocket studio; and my personal goal is to start a creative diary. I challenge anyone reading this to join me and compare notes next week. What does being creative mean to you? How are you creative? And what benefits does it bring to you? In case you can’t get started. straight from the endless wisdom of Google: Tips for a creative life - If you're alive, you're a creative person. ... Make something, do something, do anything. ... Do ordinary things differently Dig out whatever art materials you have stacked at the back of a cupboard (or visit an art shop and be inspired); put aside an hour to play. Don’t want to do art? Journal creative ideas. Keep record of seeing the world as an interesting, awe-inspiring place, worthy of being explored. What would you paint, sing or play if you could? Good luck! Hope to hear how that goes for you. I’ll write again next week. See more

10.01.2022 There are many reasons to enjoy other people’s creativity but, for me, it usually involves stories. I was in a sprawling second hand market in Pennsylvania a few years ago. One stall was stuffed to overflowing with things of dusty "potential" and my attention was caught by an odd looking wooden cat face in a corner at the back. To my surprise it was a little bag. The stall holder was in his 70's, maybe 80's, tall, thin, African American. In his slow quiet way he to...Continue reading

08.01.2022 If you’re interested in the therapeutic benefits of creativity you’ll enjoy this inspiring site: https://artandhealing.org/ in response to COVID-19, Art and Healing provides opportunities to connect with others through music, poetry, short films, a singing challenge and more. One of the Creativity Challenges is to make a personal Assemblage. This is an invitation to create a sculptural portrait of your stuck-at-home self using any meaningful objects you have in your home. I...f this idea interests you but a purely online community feels a bit impersonal, you may like to be part of a local group doing this project together. If so, please contact me and we can form a creative community in Brisbane. There’s strength in numbers and part of the benefit of being creative is sharing with others. To be part of a local creative community in Brisbane, please reach out to me by email. I’d love to hear from you and hear your story. Judy [email protected] See more

03.01.2022 Creative Stories and Expressive Arts What are expressive arts? Music, art, dance, poetry, photography and more are creative languages used to express identity. Expressive arts tell our stories in innovative ways.... Why include Expressive Arts in your life? .To develop new skills, for purpose and personal satisfaction; and feel the flow, as an active meditation. .To connect with others authentically. Online or real life, creative communities offer the support of traditional quilting circles and kitchen tables where small groups have gathered and shared over their knitting and crafts. Creative Stories Queensland offers both information from the big picture of creative resources on the internet and, if you live in Brisbane, the kitchen table experience. Wherever you are, you too can set up a small creative community group, affordable and accessible, much needed in these times of social isolation. If you do so, please share it so we can support you.
