23.01.2022 What surprised you most about peoples stories? Ive been so surprised by how many decent people are out there sleeping rough. People who are educated and have led good, productive lives and then have fallen on hard times. I met a lot of people who dont conform to the stereo types we hold of the homeless, (ie crazy, antisocial addicts). People who have been fathers and mothers and nurses and carers, people who were once homeless who now have good jobs and stable relationship...s and are giving back to their community, well educated people from privileged backgrounds, who have chosen homelessness over bankruptcy, and Ive met many people who have chosen to be homeless because theyre too proud to ask for help from their friends and family. The biggest surprise is the generosity Ive encountered on the streets. People who have nothing but would give me the shirt off their back if I needed it. In my experience, the people with the most empathy are usually that way because theyve suffered so much themselves. I met two homeless men in the Melbourne CBD who would invite people to come sit on milk crates and play UNO with them. They were best buddies and they really looked out for each other. They were so warm and kind and inclusive and funny;- I felt more at home with them on those milk crates than I have in the richest of houses.

20.01.2022 A beautiful review of Do You Know Me by an audience member who came along. This is the kind of response that makes all the hard work of creating theatre pay off. Sunday night I went to my dear friend Tiffany Barton's latest Guerrilla theatre show DO YOU KNOW ME, about the deeply unaddressed issue of homelessness. It was an interactive deeply intimate play that had you face to face with talented dynamic actors sharing a diverse collection of real life deeply honest stories ...Continue reading

17.01.2022 Thanks to Nerida Dickinson and Arts Hub for a great review! ‘Director Phil Thomson develops the ideas and ideals of Barton and co-producer Aden Date to bind hard truths and personal voices with the skills of the committed and talented cast. Barton’s stories from local homeless people are a confronting selection of diverse challenges and representation of social groups. At its heart, Do You Know Me presents compassion without condescension, leaving audiences with the challenge to find and listen to stories for themselves.’

13.01.2022 I spent my Saturday night sleeping rough in the Perth CBD with a bunch of hilarious, big hearted volunteers from Perth Homeless Support Group- I met some incre...dible people, laughed a lot and felt pretty heart broken by it all. One girl spent the night in a brothel so shed have a bed - but was demoralised because no man wanted her.... another 19 year old indig girl from Broome has just been sent to Perth from a domestic violence refuge in Alice Springs to get her away from her boyfriend who put her in a coma ( she has bad PTSD and really needs a friend or two down here). Lots of young Aboriginal men burst into tears and hugged indig activist Herbert Bropho because hes laid the Aboriginal flag on all their Mums coffins. Theres so much grief out there. Met an awesome Mardu woman who regularly communes with a three headed rainbow serpent, another amazing homeless activist whos set up homeless shelters and organisations all over the world including the housing flats in London that burnt down last year (she said that stupid bloody cladding wasnt her fault!) she once slept rough for six months so she could fully understand what issues the homeless faced and need help with. I met a beautiful one eyed Noongar man whos looking after his Mum and his wheelchair bound brother out there. Theyve all been homeless for 9 months. Seeing his mum huddled under a blanket on a footpath in a park at 2am nearly broke my heart. I met a cute French traveller who was sleeping out because he was down to his last five bucks - so we invited him to join our entourage.... I met an ex Aquinas boy and ex state swimmer with a raging meth habit and a maverick intelligence who spent an hour telling me how drugs break down the barrier between our rational mind and the supernatural realm. Then I tried to go to sleep and was woken up by a security guard then police trying to make us move on ( we told them what we were doing and they eventually left us alone). And then theres the dilemma of where to take a dump when its the middle of the night, all the public toilets near you are locked and you have no dunny roll????? One of our group used her initiative and wiped her arse with a sock she did us all proud. I feel like Ive bonded with a beautiful mad new family now. Its kinda special thanks guys. #endhomelessness #perthhomelesssupportgroup #phsgsleepout #doyouknowme #seetheneedmakeadifference

05.01.2022 Thanks to Bernadette Trench Thiedeman (animator) and Shaun Collins (sound designer) for this cool little clip. Bernies won multiple awards for her animation and puppetry, and Shaun has worked for people as high up as Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and director Peter Jackson ..... yet hes sleeping rough! Why? Because he was bitten by a spider, lost his job and couldnt get Centrelink because hes a kiwi. It doesnt take much to fall through the cracks. It could happen to any of us. Come along and hear his story. Youll be surprised by what you find out. #doyouknowme #melbournefringe2018 #endhomelessness
