Time: 7.30 pm Venue: Star Theatres, Sir Donald Bradman Drive Bookings: www.trybooking.com/BFFZD Prices: $35 (Adult) and various concessions Molière’s Les Fourberies de Scapin is a comedy about the intergenerational problems encountered by two families. It was first performed in 1671 and was one of Molière’s last plays. His comic genius is in full flower in this energetic and light-hearted production, which retains nonetheless great dramatic force. All performances are supported by surtitles in English.

15.01.2022 Tall Tales and True from the History of French Exploration in Australia FREE PUBLIC LECTURE by Jean Fornasiero (Professor Emerita of French Studies, University of Adelaide), John West-Sooby (Professor of French Studies, University of Adelaide)... The many French names dotted along parts of the Australian coastline testify to the contribution made by French explorers to geographic and scientific knowledge of our island-continent. Voyages of discovery in the Age of Sail were often fraught with danger, and many lost their lives in the pursuit of their objectives. These voyages also had their share of more whimsical moments, however. In this talk, Jean Fornasiero and John West-Sooby will highlight this lighter side of the business of maritime discovery, focusing on the French voyagers who travelled to Australia during the 18th and 19th centuries. Jean Fornasiero is Professor Emerita of French Studies at the University of Adelaide. John West-Sooby is Professor of French Studies, also at the University of Adelaide. They have worked extensively on French maritime exploration in the Indo-Pacific, notably the expedition to Australia led by Nicolas Baudin in 1800-1804. They are the authors, with Peter Monteath, of Encountering Terra Australis: the Australian Voyages of Nicolas Baudin and Matthew Flinders (Wakefield Press). In 2014, they published an edition of zoologist François Péron's "spy report" on Sydney: French Designs on Colonial New South Wales (Friends of the State Library of SA). With Lindl Lawton, they edited The Art of Science: Nicolas Baudin's Voyagers (Wakefield Press) - published to coincide with the touring exhibition of the same name. Thursday 15 November Napier 102 Lecture Theatre, University of Adelaide 6.00-7.00 pm To book go to: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/what-have-the-french-ever-done

05.01.2022 "Our Corner of the Somme; Australia at Villers-Bretonneux" Book Launch: featuring author Dr Romain Fathi (Flinders University) in conversation with Emeritus Professor Robin Prior (University of Adelaide) Date: 5 April 2019... Time: 5.30 - 7pm Venue: Hetzel Lecture Theatre, Institute Building Registration: Free, but bookings essential; to register go to: http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=828&c=45099 About the book: This book explores how the French remember ANZAC, and how Australia has remembered its Anzacs in France. "Our Corner of the Somme. Australia at Villers-Bretonneux" tells the fascinating century-long story of French-Australian relations through previously unexplored and untranslated French primary materials, and renews our understanding of Australian war commemoration. The book documents Australians’ interactions with local French people and French institutions on the former Western Front through their commemoration of Australia’s participation in the First World War. These commemorations, sometimes large and political and sometimes personal and moving, hold a significant place in Australian history. In this rigorous and richly detailed study, Dr Romain Fathi revises our current understanding of the battlefields of France, and examines the assembling, projection and performance of Australia’s national identity overseas. About the author: Romain Fathi (PhD) is Lecturer in Australian History at Flinders University and a chercheur associé at the Centre d’Histoire de Sciences Po, Paris. He has taught and researched at Sciences Po in France, Yale in the United States, and the University of Queensland in Australia. His primary research interests focus on the First World War, war commemorations and Australian identity.
