A time to honour and remember those whove come before us and work towards a better tomorrow so we can look forward with hope for those who will come after us. 19.01.2022 Today marks the 20th Anniversary of the Queensland Government's Recognition of the Australian South Sea Islanders (ASSI) as a separate cultural group who played a very important role in the economic development of the sugar industry in Queensland. Our ancestors came mainly from Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. Between 1863 and 1904, 62,000 Indentured Contracts were written which included illegality, kidnapping, racism and exploitative working conditions. ASSI wanted their hi...story told, accepted and understood and have been fighting for recognition as a separate and disadvantaged ethnic group and appreciate the assistance of the Queensland Government. The formation of The Queensland United Australian South Sea Islander Council Inc (QUASSIC) is a step forward to formalising the necessary assistance, as it is a representative body for a network of Australian South Sea Islander communities and organisations. QUASSIC Inc will deal with keeping our history and culture alive and promote to the State & Federal governments the needs of our community in the areas of health, education, housing, employment and training amongst other needs. Our hearts are hurting and we weep for what has been done. Humans have forgotten how to live in this natural environment you have created with its beauty and its diversity. We now have no awareness of what is around us. We do not look, we do not see and we do not listen to the changing environment and all that sustains us. It is we who are responsible for the melting snowcaps, the rising waters, the drought, pollution, fires and viruses. The way you have been treated is appalling. Raping and pillaging your non-renewable resources, has brought us to the point whereby you may no longer be able to sustain our existence. I Woke up in the dream again, a train went into my eye,... been sleeping in bed all day, stayed up late with the news at night, day by day and the cases rise, everything is about to shift, Kim Dalton I got your LIVESTRONG band and I wear it around my wrist, but I feel sick and Im anxious, how did it all go down like this? Ive never seen you like this, youve been through so much in the past few months and I wanted to say that Im proud of you. Youre dealing with so much change and uncertainty, yet you remain steady and strong. Its confusing, its confronting and at the this stage, somewhat out of control. Its almost as though Mother Earth has been screaming for a break, and this is the result. Although it is a time of uncertainty, it can also be a time of rejuvenation. We can all let ourselves be consumed by our daily routines, our ambition and the pressure of society; that we often; and easily, forget about each other. Now is the time to spread love, hope and magick. Take the time to be with your nearest and dearest. May we stay faithful. May we stay positive. In these trying times, I think about where I live, the community where I live in South West Sydney. On the border of Darug and Tharawal lands. Born and raised in this area, I miss the many things we take for granted, the simple things. Being out and about in the local community, seeing people from all walks of life just doing every day things. Kids running around playing with each other. Parents speaking their many languages. The vibrancy. The culture. The normality of the every day. I keep that in my mind because I love this place. I love the people. I love the vibe. I love the energy. And I look forward to when we can go back out in the world and just be. In the mean time, may we BE, in our own space. BE ourselves with our loved ones closed. Not taking them for granted.
