25.01.2022 How the 2002-2004 global SARS epidemic was stopped. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2636331/

25.01.2022 Wow. Just wow.

24.01.2022 This is apparently a more reliable site for stats on Covid 19. However it is nowhere near as easy to use and TBH the figures arent too far off those of World o Meters, so unless you are needing figures for official use, most of us are just as well off using World o Meters page. https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html

22.01.2022 Not a quick easy read, but an important read if youre going to enjoy the lifting of lockdown.

16.01.2022 GDA2020 has arrived! If you run a business or use spatial information products in daily life, then you need to know Australia has adopted GDA2020 to update our... geocentric datum to keep pace with changing technologies and the dynamic nature of the Earths surface. The Australian tectonic plate is moving at a faster rate than any other on the planet, approximately 7cm per year. This means we have to reset our spatial data reference system nationally and locally to the new GDA2020 datum points (in unison) so businesses and systems that rely on location specific data such as GPS are spot on. The good news for Queensland is we have laws and systematic updates in place to manage the transition from the old to the new GDA2020 coordinate reference points. Updating to GDA2020 will benefit businesses in construction, agriculture, insurance, emergency services, mapping, surveying, transport, tourism, environmental management, scientific research, automation, telecommunications and entertainment. 14.01.2022 The response to the pandemic is causing myriad other problems. We have to look at all of those, medical, social, economic, educational and societal, we have to consider it all as we work out what to do next, what level of restrictions we can endure and what level of infections we can tolerate. Well lets do that. The R0 value of the 1918 pandemic was estimated to be between 1.4 and 2.8 and an estimated one third of the worlds population were infected and had clinically app...arent illnesses in the 2 years between March 1918 and March 1920. The R0 for COVID-19 is a median of 5.7 so what proportion of the worlds population might we expect to be infected this time? Lets just stick with 1/3. In terms of what level of restrictions we can endure and what level of infections we can tolerate, we know that globally 20% of cases of Covid 19 end up in hospital and about 5% typically die. So far Australias rates have been lower but thats because we have thrown everything inc. the kitchen sink at keeping it at bay. If we switch to a lets just live with it approach, were likely to end up with hospitalisation and death rates approaching those of the global average. How will those figures translate into Australian numbers? Say 25 million people in Australia. One third get infected in the next 2 years, thats over 8 million. Thats 1.6 million in hospital and 400,000 dead. Assuming just one third of us get infected. So what level of restrictions can we endure and what level of infections can we tolerate? https://www.skynews.com.au/details/_6181052126001

14.01.2022 I really dont understand how "Big Pharma" conspiracies have made it to Australia. We have a tax-payer funded healthcare system where most medical costs incurre...d by the individual is heavily subsidised by our government, and we have legislation in place that prevents cost inflation of pharmaceuticals and procedures. This means a procedure may cost only a few tens of thousands of dollars to the taxpayer rather than hundreds of thousands of dollars to the individual. It also means that if I need to go to hospital I dont have a bill. It means medication on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (the list of medications subsidised by the government) is $5 - $40, not hundreds to thousands of dollars each. Because of how our healthcare system is set up in Australia, it is in the governments best interest to ensure that everyone in the country is healthy and stays healthy. The fewer people staying in hospital means fewer subsidies they need to fork out and more money in the national budget for literally anything else. This is why vaccines are so vital to a nations healthcare system - a vaccine is the difference between feeling a little shitty for a few days if you catch something, and thousands of dollars per night in a hospital bed. The whole idea of "Big Pharma" keeping us sick to make a profit in the context of Australia is ludicrous. There will always be pathogens that you can contract. The will always be microbes that will make you sick. There will always be broken bones, infections, car accidents, falls, STIs, allergies and other events that require pharmaceutical and medical intervention. The idea that COVID 19 is a plot to keep us under control is quite frankly, fucking embarrassing. Economies the world over are suffering because of widespread lockdowns. You cant stimulate the economy effectively and continue giving capitalists money if your avenues for spending it have been restricted. The world doesnt want a lockdown, we need a lockdown to keep us safe. For-profit healthcare systems fucking suck. If you live in a country without for-profit healthcare - fight to keep it that way.

12.01.2022 Another happy client. This client came to me wanting due diligence on a piece of real estate. It was either a great opportunity disguised by lots of hard work or it was too good to be true. The property was being advertised as a 1 bedroom 2 bathroom house on a freehold quarter acre lot with a 25 year lease on the adjoining three quarter acre lot. The ad said the owner would be able to freehold the three quarter acre lot. If all this was true it would have been a... great opportunity. The listing agent didnt seem to know much in the clients first phone call and wasnt returning later calls. Not having any experience in buying real estate and having no idea how to find out, the client needed someone who could look at it objectively and chase down information. Thats why I was called in. History of the lot was easy to find online but raised more questions than answers. It turned out the house wasnt a house, it was actually an ex sporting groups clubhouse. The local council was not satisfied it could be retrospectively approved as a residence. The one bedroom was actually the former cold store which had been stripped and the two bathrooms were actually the ladies and gents toilets. The real problem related to the boundaries of the two lots. The ex clubhouse wasnt built on the freehold lot as advertised. It was approved to be built on the leasehold lot but was actually constructed straddling the boundaries. Further, the leasehold lot was a reserve for sporting purposes. The current owner didnt have permission to sell the lease over the leasehold lot, and no-one was sure how the current owner of the freehold lot had ended up as the leaseholder of the adjoining lot. There was no way to freehold the leasehold lot by the owner which is what would need to be done first, before amalgamating the two lots and then redrawing boundaries to suit the buildings actual location. In short the only real estate that could be bought by my client was a vacant quarter acre block with part of a building unlawfully intruding onto it. A real estate investor might have been willing to put in the work to jump through many hoops to make a profit but my client is a single mum trying to shift work, care for littlies and get funds together for their future. Based on the information I gathered for her, she has moved on to find a better prospect. See more

05.01.2022 Ever wondered how place names are changed, including offensive names? The Place Names Act 1994, allows for features or areas of land, whether natural or artific...ial, to be named and DNRME manages this process, including public consultation and recommendations made to the Minister. How places are named is guided by a set of principles to ensure there is no confusion, errors or discrimination. 03.01.2022 Plot of Australias Covid 19 death tally.

03.01.2022 Abstract It is urgent to understand the future of severe acute respiratory syndromecoronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission. We used estimates of seasonality, immunity, and cross-immunity for betacoronaviruses OC43 and HKU1 from time series data from the USA to inform a model of SARS-CoV-2 transmission. We projected that recurrent wintertime outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 will probably occur after the initial, most severe pandemic wave. Absent other interventions, a key metric for t...he success of social distancing is whether critical care capacities are exceeded. To avoid this, prolonged or intermittent social distancing may be necessary into 2022. Additional interventions, including expanded critical care capacity and an effective therapeutic, would improve the success of intermittent distancing and hasten the acquisition of herd immunity. Longitudinal serological studies are urgently needed to determine the extent and duration of immunity to SARS-CoV-2. Even in the event of apparent elimination, SARS-CoV-2 surveillance should be maintained since a resurgence in contagion could be possible as late as 2024. See more
