23.01.2022 March 25 - Greek Independence Day & the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in the Orthodox Church. In 1821, the Greeks rose up against the Ottoman Empire which had occupied Greece for almost 400 years, leading to the war of independence. ' ' (freedom or death) is the motto of Greece, it was the war cry for those Greeks who rebelled against Ottoman rule. ... Today Greeks all over the world will celebrate differently. While we cannot join together as a community to commemorate this day, we can still do so from our homes. We encourage you to raise your flags as a sign of national pride and reflect on the strength of our nation.

19.01.2022 On this day: 20 May 1941, began the Battle of Crete, one of the most dramatic battles that changed the course of WWII. Over 12 days a mixed force of Greek, Australian, New Zealand, and British troops, assisted by Cretan civilians tried to fight off the huge German airborne assault. Thousands were killed and captured as prisoners of war. With the help of Cretan civilians, a handful eluded capture on the island for years and took part in resistance fighting. Today we commemorate the 79th anniversary. We remember those who sacrificed everything to fight for their independence. Lest we forget
