17.01.2022 When giving people equity, consider whether they are an employee or contractor. Employees must be paid a salary, you cannot substitute it with equity. Contractors can be paid only in equity. A lot of advisors for startups might have no salary and instead, get 2% in the company over a period of time that’s purely equity.... 15.01.2022 Public and private companies can issue equity, options, and shares. BUT. One of the main considerations to look out for is the kind of tax implications it will have on your employees. Get this wrong, and it will completely undermine the whole purpose of incentivizing employees. If your business has assets and is generating revenue, you can’t issue shares for no value. The ATO could look at this situation and disagree with how valuable the shares are and tax the employee upfro...nt. This unnecessarily complicates things for the employee hit with a tax burden. 03.01.2022 Are we about to see the best Talent Market in a decade? This situation is unprecedented in our lifetimes but the broader economic downturn we are experiencing is not. In fact, over the past 20 years, there have been two major market downturns that have significantly impacted the technology sector. They were the Dot-Com bust of 2000 2002 and the GFC in 2008 2010.
