17.01.2022 Cricket Lovers were saddened to hear of the recent passing of Eric Freeman, guest speaker at our Christmas dinner in December 2015. Eric spoke to us about his cricket and football careers and was thanked by CL member David Jenkins, author of Eric's biography "A Man for All Seasons". Eric played 11 Tests for Australia, scoring 345 runs @ 19.16 with a HS 76 v. West Indies and 34 wickets @ 33.17 with Best Bowling stats of 4/52. His 83 First class games yielded 2244 runs @ 19.17... (almost identical with his Test average), H.S. 116 for the Australians v. Northamptonshire in 1968 (scored in 90 minutes with 5x6s and 13x4s) and 241 wickets @ 37.75 with Best stats of 8/47 S.A. v. New Zealanders (match figures of 11/97). He toured with Australian teams to New Zealand in 196667, England in 1968, and India and South Africa in 196970. Eric was the first batsman in test history to get off the mark in his test career by scoring a six. Up to date, only 5 batsmen have achieved that feat in test cricket. Ian Chappell is quoted as saying that ‘Fritzi was the best Test #7 in his time’. A talented Aussie Rules footballer, he played 115 SANFL games for Port Adelaide, kicking 390 goals including 70 or more in each 5 seasons topping the SANFL list with 81 goals in 1967. He also played 6 matches for South Australia and kicked 13 goals. Today Eric would have been a much sought after BBL and AFL player.
