09.01.2022 Saturday was another fantastic day’s cricket in round 2 of the McDonald's Country Championships Southern Pool in Goulburn. Riverina continued on their strong start the Championships defeating Western to remain undefeated, whilst a late order fightback saw ACT Southern Districts grab their first win of the Championships. > > Riverina v Western at Prell Oval > Batting first saw a very even performance from Riverina led by Brayden Ambler with 61, Ben Mitchell 47no, Dean Bennett... 39, Matthew Sharp 32 and Nathan Brown 23no saw the Irrigators tally a very competitive 5/242. Matt Skinner was the best with the ball from Western Zone taking 2/27. In reply, Western got away to a solid start with the Qureshi brothers Jameel 38 and Imran 30 both getting starts. This however would be the story of the day with no batter going on with it to see Western dismissed for 189. Spinner Ben Mitchell enjoyed a good day, taking 3/44 following on his performance with the bat, whilst Nathan Brown and Dean Bennett both took 2 wickets. > > ACT Southern Districts v Greater Illawarra at Seiffert Oval Batting > first, Greater Illawarra batted steadily to tally 7/220 from their 50 overs, with Brynley Richards notching up his second half century for the Championships in scoring 62. Richards was well supported by Kerrod White (37) and Mitch Hearn (34). Lewis Evans was the pick of the bowlers for ACTSD taking 3/32, while Finn McGurk took 2/32. In reply ACTSD were in all sorts of trouble being 4/27, then 5/35 and 6/91 after Rhys Vosey and Eric Denhartog ripped apart the top order. Enter young pace man Tyler Van Luin who didn’t read the script and dug in and added 34 with Angus Jones, 63 with Finn McGurk, and with 9 wickets down and the score at 201, added a further 21 with Brad Smith for the last wicket winning the game with a superbly struck straight six, remaining not out on 94 from 96 balls. > > Table: > Riverina 12 > Greater Illawarra 6 (-0.12) > ACT Sthn Districts 6 (-0.66) > Western 0 > > The winner of this pool with qualify for the final of the McDonald’s Country Championships against the winner of the Northern Pool. > > Round 3 > ACT Southern Districts v Western at Seiffert Oval Riverina v Greater > Illawarra at Prell Oval Riverina captain Dave Cullen tosses the coin against Western on Saturday and Tyler Van Luin, who scored 94 not out for ACT Southern Districts.
