24.01.2022 The next generation of parents of the Sutherland Hospital Maternity Ward will receive in their hospital information take home pack, a voucher for a 200mm pot sized tree from Council's Community Nursery to plant in their property in honour of the birth of their newborn baby. This is the latest initiative from the Green Streets Program to positively contribute to achieving Council's Community Strategic Plan measure of "No Net Canopy Loss". The initiative has been inspired by Sister Haxton of the Jacaranda Maternity Hospital in the 1950's, where Jacaranda seedlings were given to new mothers to plant in honour of their newborns.

20.01.2022 Hazelhurst Art Centre will be closed on Monday 20 July as a precaution following advice from NSW Health today of a possible COVID-19 case in a visitor. The closure will allow NSW Health to determine whether any further action is necessary to ensure the health and safety of our patrons and staff. Council is working closely with NSW Health as the lead public health agency, and will follow its advice. Further updates will be provided as they become available. The recent incre...ase in cases across NSW and Victoria are an important reminder that every one of us need to keep observing social distancing, hand washing and monitoring our own health. Council urges everyone in our community to follow NSW Health advice, and if you are showing any symptoms, no matter how mild, to attend a clinic for testing. For further details on Coronavirus and for full details of testing locations, please visit NSW Health website. We understand this is a concerning time, and ensuring our facilities and services are COVIDSafe continues to be our utmost priority.

Due to the small size of the activity, the burn will not generate any significant smoke to the broader community.

13.01.2022 #WildlifeWednesday KOALA-ty time for a reminder! We’re been thrilled to hear about sightings of one of the most iconic Aussie species in our own backyard. Ko...alas are listed as vulnerable to extinction in NSW and are a protected species. While we’re ALL excited to see these beautiful creatures, our Environmental Science team wanted to share a few reminders with the community: Drive carefully and be koala-aware, especially on major highways such as Heathcote Road and New Illawarra Road at dusk, dawn and night. Keep dogs on a leash and inside at night. Report sick or injured koalas to WIRES on 1300 094 737. Keep your distance! Koalas are timid animals, prone to becoming stressed by loud noises, flash photography and crowding. If you know of a local koala sighting, don’t post the specific location online. Report sightings of koalas in Sutherland Shire to Council so our Environmental Science team can keep an eye on their health and protect their habitat (call 9710 0627). You can also download the ‘I Spy Koala’ App on Android and Apple.

07.01.2022 Firefighters continue to monitor the Bundanoon Road West hazard reduction burn at Woronora Heights. An isolated shower moved through the area this morning, slow...ing the progress of the burn. As a result this moisture, pockets of fire continue to burn within containment lines and is expected to do so overnight, despite some shower activity in the area. Early to mid next week, warm and dry weather will return locally and these pockets will continue to be active. Crews will patrol as required with further burning to be undertaken as required. The smoke in the area, in particular Barden Ridge, will clear tomorrow. We ask you only ring triple zero if the fire is threatening your home. 06.01.2022 UPDATE: NSW Health has confirmed this afternoon that a case under investigation of possible COVID-19 exposure at Hazelhurst Arts Centre has been deemed as a fal...se positive test and therefore poses no threat to public health. NSW Health has also confirmed the more detailed testing of an employee from Franklin Rd Early Childhood Centre was deemed as a false positive. This is welcome news, and we are grateful for the thorough and detailed testing by NSW Health that has ruled out any possible exposure at these two Council facilities. The procedures at Hazelhurst Arts Centre enabled NSW Health to be provided with essential contact information to investigate the case. Council is taking the added precaution of Hazelhurst remaining closed on Tuesday 21 July to allow further review of COVIDSafe procedures in conjunction with the management of the Hazelhurst Cafe to ensure we re-open to visitors with the most rigorous precautions in place. Hazelhurst will re-open at 9am on Wednesday 22 July. Franklin Road Early Childhood Centre remained operational based on the timing of when the employee had last attended, however we are pleased to be able assure our families and staff that NSW Health have found there to be no public health risk. Council will continue to work closely with NSW Health and follow every directive, as we all responsibly manage through this period of public health orders to mitigate the risks of COVID-19 and ensure the health and safety of our community and staff. 02.01.2022 THE CARTER ROAD BUS ONLY LANE Transport for NSW (TfNSW) and Sutherland Shire Council are collaborating to improve safety for the Menai and Barden Ridge communities and public transport passengers. Works are set to commence on installing a ‘Bus Only’ lane and enforcement camera on the bridge between Carter Road and Australia Road, Menai, resulting in the removal of the existing bus gate. The existing bus gate has been unreliable in recent times, resulting in gate being locked ...for periods of time and not allowing buses to pass. The installation of a ‘Bus Only’ lane will remove access restrictions for buses and emergency service vehicles and allow flexibility in the event of an ordered emergency evacuation. The changes will not alter the vehicles permitted to travel across the bridge, with only buses and emergency vehicles responding to emergency events permitted. Drivers of unauthorised vehicles will be subject to fines and demerit points, however Council will not benefit from the fines. TfNSW will be requested to waive the fines during an ordered emergency evacuation. Works are scheduled to be undertaken by TfNSW, beginning on 14 December 2020 and be finalised by 20 January 2021, with some works taking place at night so to not disrupt public transport services. A concept plan of the works are provided below. More details regarding the background of the works can be found at: https://www.sutherlandshire.nsw.gov.au//Key-councilprojects
