25.01.2022 So, the packing begins. Sydney, Canberra and all points south come say hello to us and @wholehearted.healthcare over the weekend. I look forward to putting some faces to familiar names.

25.01.2022 See how an age-old craft is being kept alive in rural Queensland! 7PM Friday on Better Homes @adamdovile #bhgaus

22.01.2022 I had a lot of fun fitting a different type of shoe horn recently. #Texaslonghorn bull wouldn’t stay where he was put. Got on the road and argued with a road train. One horn was broken off but healed over time, but the bull didn’t learn so he turned into sausages. I made eight beakers from his one and a half horns. It’s a shame that I never could drive a row of shoeing nails straight!

22.01.2022 We were honoured to view the collection belonging to the Worshipful Company of Horners Yesterday. In order of the photos:- 1 & 2 a scrimshawed shoehorn made by the famous Robert Mindum and dated 1612. Photos 3 & 4 a scrimshawed sounding horn from 1793. Photo 5 @barbplant with a couple of seriously old horn beakers. Photo 6 a couple of pressed horn snuff boxes, not easily done. #6 is Charles 1. Many Many thanks to Katherine Pell MoDiP and Georgina Scott Hon Keeper of Horn, Worshipful Company of Horners for making this happen for me and to Louise Dennis Curator MoDiP for generously sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm.

21.01.2022 Dining table looks about right for a Thursday night, this lot polished and half the bags done waiting for the silver duck stamp. The thing is, look at the cheese knives they are changing shape! Hope your Easter dishes up every thing you need and a bit of what you’d like.

20.01.2022 Bit of a surprise finding drinking horns in a Nordic Museum. First four photos are cattle horn, fifth is carved Rhino horn about 500mm high, 6 & 7 are scrimshawed bone the last wooden spoons.

17.01.2022 We didn’t find a lot of horn work in Switzerland but stumbled on a few incredible craftsmen. First up is Abelbert Fascer who makes traditional Swiss leather apparel but also does repairs to all manner of ancient things, swords scabbards crossbows etc etc etc almost entirely with hand tools as they were made centuries ago. Two things of any type requiring power in the whole place and one was a radio. The stick thing is a backpack that I suspect is made of Hazel as was Otzi the ice man’s. Next was a bloke preserving the art of making cow bells, these things really chime. Lastly a lady casting pewter ornaments in a three story building with different craftsmen on each floor, all teaching and working on their craft.

16.01.2022 A simple recipe I hope none of you need, though just might make a huge difference for someone. The actual recipe is explained in the video. The algorithms wouldn’t let me share the original post. Sales of our Kitchen Medicine book have gone through the roof since one of our readers uploaded a video about how an onion poultice helped her with chest pain and pneumonia from Covid-19. You can watch the video here: https://youtu.be/xXvcFM_dBLI If you are in North America, the ne...w edition of our book in the US is called Home Remedies. Our UK publisher has sold out, except for the ebook (http://merlinunwin.co.uk/booklist.asp?categoryID=10) though we still have a few copies available through our website: www.hedgerowmedicine.com See more

14.01.2022 It must be Christmas because Michael & Olivia delivered a six drums of Woologorang horns yesterday, last photo. The first nine photos are some of the hi-lights we’ve finished since the last post a couple of months ago. More spam in the next couple of posts. Wishing everyone a Christmas full of laughter and a wet and wonderfull 2020.

13.01.2022 For those who missed it, a really good looking bloke. I’m also in there. https://www.bhg.com.au/crofters-craft-ross-plant

12.01.2022 More photos in the comments. One of a few pewter bowls I spun some years ago, this one sat waiting for inspiration. I’m not certain what it’ll be used for but it’s handle/stand is nicely balanced. To quote an old friend In brief moments of illumination, inspiration comes. This one is going to Lost Trades Fair in Bendigo but I do have another horn from the same ram.

12.01.2022 Some of the horn snuff boxes to be seen in the Worshipful Company of Horners Collection.

12.01.2022 Mustard pots, salt pots, little salt spoons, salad servers and carving sets all from the last month.

10.01.2022 More from the Worshipful Company of Horners Collection. A horn hair Combe from 1850 (beautiful hey? I want to make some of these), a couple of elaborate pierced horn fans 19th century, a horn book early to late 17th century(the page is horn) and a fork & spoon.

10.01.2022 Hi All, Being a member of the Crows Nest community and not being able to do too much help with fighting the recent fires, I would like to give something for th...ose who have been. I am offering free 45min naturopathic and nutrition consultations for our local firefighters, SES, police, or any associated volunteers in the north Toowoomba region who have been doing such an amazing job helping with the fires! (this could include people such as the amazing wildlife carers too) For each person, I will offer a free product such as a burn balm, lung tonic, sleep tea, etc (dependant on the person) to help with recovery, plus lots of nutritional advice on how to keep their energy up during the long days of helping our community. If you know a firefighter or someone who has been going above and beyond helping our community who would benefit from this, please tag or DM me their names and I will draw the names out next week, I have 8 spots to give away!

09.01.2022 Some more amazing pieces from the MoDiP. First up a large silver mounted snuff mull with topaz accoutrements and accoutrements 1807, 2nd Horn cup, silver and gilt lining by John Burnell Esq, Citizen and Horner 1836. 3rd Lantern with Horn panes, 19th century. Lastly an incredible Japanese style horn cigar case, stained to imitate tortoise shell. The fineness and perfection of fit of this is staggering.

04.01.2022 Repost from Olivia O'Connor Rocking Horses insta @OliviaOconnorCarving Occasionally in life you meet what to some is just an object, another piece to be put on the shelf. But to the right person it is a piece of unattainable beauty and yet it can be held, made by hand but somehow possesses a soul. I have admired the work of @crofterscraft for years and when I saw this quaich I fell in love with it and just knew that it had to come home with me, it’s beauty and texture are ...just beyond, made for holding and pondering. Made from horn and fine Italian pewter. Quaich: a traditional Scottish, two handed drinking vessel. What more can I say, but thank you Olivia.

04.01.2022 Seven months since the last post so I thought I should show proof of life. I’ll do a few posts of some interesting things I’ve made in that time. First up are some of the horn & pewter chop sticks from an order for a good client in Sydney.

02.01.2022 Tapping the threads into handles.

02.01.2022 The very generous @redloopwhips sent me this beautiful whip as a gift. It’s made of para cord so will really soak up the work. The packaging with 2 spare falls and a handful of crackers, hand written & wax sealed note, and Lindt chocolate are all amazing. Have a look at his feed and give him a follow.
