24.01.2022 R U OK? A conversation could change a life. If you feel like something’s not quite the same with someone you know there’s something going on in their life or you notice a change in what they’re saying or doing - trust that gut instinct and take the time to ask them Are you OK?... You don’t have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says they’re not OK. By knowing what to say you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before they’re in crisis, which can make a really positive difference to their life. 17.01.2022 MESSAGE FROM SUTHERLAND SHIRE POLICE COMMANDER I would like to assure the community that local police are continuing increased foot patrols of a wide range of a...reas within the Sutherland Shire as well as responding to calls for assistance. Members of the public are likely to see our officers at retail outlets and shopping centres more often, as we increase our presence in and around these areas as part of our proactive patrols. This health crisis is nothing like anything we’ve ever experienced, and I can understand members of the community are anxious. But I want to assure you police are committed to using all the powers available to us to enforce all COVID-19 related public health orders and play our part in stopping the spread of this virus. I am encouraged to see most members of the community are taking this situation seriously and heeding the social distancing advice of the government. However, disturbingly, our officers have already responded to a number of reports of breaches of self-isolation by members of the community. Police can now issue a Penalty Infringement Notice, or an on-the-spot fine, for the offence of not complying with a ministerial direction or a public health order. This on the spot fine is $1000 for individuals and $5000 for businesses. Ministerial Directions we will be enforcing include: - Self-isolation of diagnosed persons - Self-isolation of incoming travellers - Mass gatherings and social distancing rules - Closure of social gathering places (pubs, clubs, restaurants and other venues) Please stay safe and continue to follow the official government advice so police DO NOT NEED to intervene. This is a very contagious virus and we all need to do everything we can to play our part to stop its spread. Jason Box Superintendent Sutherland Shire police Area Command
