11.01.2022 PET OF THE MONTH- JANUARY Meet Shadow the elegant Borzoi whom came in to CVH for his annual vaccinations & check up. Shadow’s owners noticed a discolouration to the top of his mandibular canine. Dr Tess recommended that Shadow have a dental under general anaesthesia to further assess the tooth using dental radiographs and determine the best course of action. At Crookwell Vets we have recently invested in a dental radiograph machine and it has the power to give us so much mor...e information about a tooth and how healthy it is by giving us a picture of the inside of it and how it looks below the gum line. Shadow was placed under general anaesthesia and radiographs taken of his teeth. After closer examination of the x-rays it was determined that the discoloured canine had a condition known as ‘pulpitis’. Pulpitis is the inflammation of the nerves, blood vessels, lymphatics and connective tissues that are inside a tooth. It is most commonly caused by trauma to the tooth. Teeth affected by pulpitis will eventually die. People suffering from pulpitis report that the condition is painful! Dog and cats are very stoic and unreliable at expressing dental pain in particular. In addition to discomfort, dead or dying teeth are a potential source of infection. Dr Tess decided that the best treatment for Shadow’s troublesome tooth was to extract/remove it. Not an easy feat given the large and tough root of the dogs canine, in Shadow’s case 3cm of root below the gum line within the bone of the top jaw!!!!! Dr Tess did a great job at removing the tooth with a lot of patience! You may also notice that Shadow is missing an eye. Why you may ask? Shadow’s very observant owner noticed a change to the blood vessels of his right eye, increasing in size. Shadow was seen by the specialist ophthalmologist and it was determined that these vessels were cancerous. Haemangiosarcomas/ haemangiomas of the eye are rarely malignant but are very locally invasive, infiltrating the tissues of the eye. It was recommended that Shadow’s eye be removed (enucleated). The enucleation of the eye was successfully performed at Crookwell Vets by Dr Jayde. Shadow has been through a lot in his life, but he has taken it all in his stride and has adjusted extremely well.
