05.01.2022 In the early 1980s a Dargo timber mill purchased early historic rolling stock, from a railway train that once ran on the Dimboola line, as cheap forest worker a...ccommodation. The circa 1890 vans or carriages were trucked to Dargo where they were unloaded by fork lift and stored next to the mill timber yard. The carriages were taken on the back of a truck to the logging areas or stored at the mill as required. This particular carriage was taken up taken to Basalt Knob in 1982, a year after the logging road was constructed. The carriage remained there after the coup was cut out because of the great difficulty experienced in getting it there. John Hurley was among those who built the logging road and later camped in the carriage while logging in the area. . Other parts of the train are situated at the Wonnangatta Caravan Park, at Dargo, and on Taylor’s property. Post WW2 forest accommodation for logging varied from portable paling clad huts built by the mills, to motor buses and caravans, used by logging contractors, but seldom railway rolling stock. THE T101 ICE WAGON Railway Carriage Hut was a short wheel-base freezer van or T 101 ice-wagon, built in 1894 by C.W. Kelly & Pinder at the Newport workshops for the Victorian Railways. It was put in service on 22 December 1894, could take a load of 12.5 tons, had 8 axles of 4.5" diam, and four wheels of 3' 2" diam. The van was deregistered and broken up in May 1978. These early ice wagons were hauled by steam diesel powered trains. There were 191 of the T Class built from 1894 to 1904 and they were generally in service until the late 1970s. T Class vans could carry a maximum of 12 cwt hung from the roof. The Victorian Railways operated their own ice works between 1894 and the early 1980s in their Melbourne yard to supply ice for cooling the insulated van fleet. By the 1920s, ice was also used to chill drinking water in country carriages, Railway Refreshment Rooms and dining car iceboxes. DAMIEN SCOTT MEMORIES Recollections per communications from Damien Scott : unsure of the year but it was probably around 1982 when this carriage was was bought from David Coates in Dargo by Ken Scott who carted logs in the area from around 1980-1987. Unsure if the carriage was once owned by the Dargo mill but it was sitting at the mill when Ken bought it. Ken then sold it to David Eddy from Deeandal and Sons logging company who harvested logs also in the area from 1981-1987. During this time Ken carted logs for David and it was Ken who transported the carriage from Dargo to it's current location using Davids low loader. This was where they had their logging camp. At the time there were two other huts that belonged to the mill at the camp which along with this one was used as a windbreak for their caravans. Unsure of when the other huts were removed by the mill but Davids carriage stayed there when the camp shifted as he was still logging in the area . He was using it as a storage hut but it was broken into and items were stolen. Upon leaving the Dargo area he always intended to remove the carriage but never got around to it. UPDATE : This was destroyed in the 2020 fires. Research by Sharyn Chambers.
