24.01.2022 MONDAY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT . Kim Garratt Age: 61 Member since: November 2013... . How did you get started at CrossFit New Beginning and what was your first workout? My daughter encouraged me to start training at CFNB at the end of 2013 and after much hesitation thinking I was too old for this sort of exercise, I finally decided to give it a go ... I have never looked back! I remember my first workout was Karen HOLEY MOLEY!!! I never even knew what a wall ball was and then to have to do 150 was a real killer!!! But I knew after that first session it was going to be the beginning of my fitness journey no matter how physically and emotionally challenging it was going to be . What changes you have made since starting with us? Since starting at CFNB and being educated over the years, I have become more aware of my diet and nutrition and of fuelling my body and also the importance of mobility and strength training to keep me strong in my functional movements which transfers into my daily life. . What’s the best thing about training at CFNB? The minute you walk through the door it doesn’t matter what age you are, your fitness level or your capability is, everyone is friendly and encouraging and you feel a part of an amazing community You know you are in a safe place to train and to reach your fitness goals, as the coaches are so caring and knowledgeable. I would not have achieved what I have to date at my age without their guidance every step of the way. . Tell us something about yourself that no one else would know? Back many, many years ago I ran the ‘Wang Australian Marathon’ also my husband and I have taken out first place in our age category for the ‘City to Surf’ hence probably why I have dodgy knees now ... lol . . . . . #ageisjustanumber #motheranddaughtergoals #karen #strengthtraining #strongerfitterhappiertogether #cfnb #crossfitnewbeginning See more

24.01.2022 MONDAY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT . Ryan Fitzhenry Age: 34 Member since: 2012... . How did you get started at CrossFit New Beginning and what was your first workout? I started 8 years ago after my now fianc Ally and I had moved to Sydney. I was convinced by my new neighbour Rick Pedley-Smith. I couldnt believe the guy wanted to get up 6am to exercise! The first workout was to complete snatches, pull ups and wall balls, all of which I had never heard of. It started with James Caddy taking us through snatch drills and ended with Matt Baitieri yelling at me to keep moving ... I absolutely loved it!! . What changes you have made since starting with us? Im always up out of bed before 6am and I exercise at least 3 times a week . Whats the best thing about training at CFNB? The people - I am not sure what it is but the place has always attracted great friendly humble people from all walks of life. . Tell us something about yourself that no one else would know? I never played sport, I would pull anything to avoid PE . . . . . #morningwods #routine #community #strongerfitterhappiertogether #cfnb #crossfitnewbeginning See more

24.01.2022 MONDAY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT . Joel Fjalarsson Age: 20 Member since: March 2019... . How did you get started at CrossFit New Beginning and what was your first workout? I started 5 years ago when I started at CrossFit Reykjavik back in Iceland (Annie Thorisdottirs box), a big place of 1,600+ members. I actually started working at the gym before I really joined as a member. I did cleaning, worked at the childcare, and then reception. As I worked there it didnt take long until I became a member and have been loving it ever since I remember first coming to CFNB. It was a little uncomfortable with the language barrier and everything that comes with it. The extreme Aussie accent didnt help as well. All I can remember from the workout was that it involved some snatches. The coaches were a little careful with this new kid trying out snatching, but pretty soon we all loosened up. Now Im a changed man and a huge fan of the Aussie accent . What changes you have made since starting with us? The better athlete I become, the easier I find it to give more. What I mean is, when I can see my body start changing, the more I want to work out and to eat healthy! While that is true, we all still need a few cheat days . Whats the best thing about training at CFNB? The community, hands down. Even if its only that one hour of the day or even if I dont talk a whole lot, it is the his and byes, the encouragements, the fist bumps, and high fives - the acknowledgement that I get to be a part of you. Sometimes family dinners are great, sometimes they are not as great. But you know its always family . Tell us something about yourself that no one else would know? I once tried to do a backflip. After being stitched up at the hospital, I realized I cant do everything . . . . . #iceland #aussieaccents #family #fistpumpsandhighfives #strongerfitterhappiertogether #cfnb #crossfitnewbeginning See more

23.01.2022 MONDAY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Brad Halls Age: 37 years Member since September 2018... . How did you get started at CrossFit New Beginning and what was your first workout Jacob convinced me to try it out after training on my own at home for about 6 months. My first workout was 12 days of Xmas in the old gym. It was 48 degrees and I trained with Gatesy who carried me the whole way! Plus Jacob may have given me pre-workout I could feel the hair follicles on my head growing as I was dying . What changes you have made since starting with us at CFNB? I have become more aware and tried to be more disciplined with food. I still enjoy food and things I shouldnt but try to make smarter decisions. . What is the best thing about training at CFNB? So many things, the training and format is what I first loved. Then I began to get to know the morning crew including coaches and loved their energy and focus. The whole community has had such a positive influence on me over the last 2 years. . Tell us something about yourself that no one else would know? 23.01.2022 MONDAY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT . Name: Martin Vaughan Age: 65 Member Since: September 2013... . How did you get started at CrossFit New Beginning and what was your first workout? I was never a great believer in going to the gym and preferred running and surfing. Following a serious injury, I needed to give running away and by chance walked into CFNB on promotion day. I knew the owner (at that time) and the rest is history! I cant remember what the first workout was, but I do recall getting paired with one of the better female athletes one Saturday morning. She ground me into the dirt! I knew then that I was in real trouble because I thought that I was pretty fit and quickly found out that I had a long way to go. . What changes you have made since starting with us? I have certainly improved my fitness and flexibility. My body weight is not greatly different but its definitely better spread out! Im certainly healthier overall and stronger than I think Ive ever been. . Whats the best thing about training at CFNB? Apart from the overall physical benefits, the ability to do exercises that I really would not have considered possible previously is a great boost to body confidence and mental strength. Putting aside the physical aspects, there is a definite emotional connection between all the CFNB team. Owners, coaches and participants alike share a joy on each others company and make each visit and workout an absolute pleasure. . Tell us something about yourself that no one else would know? It really wasnt until later in life that I cared too much about my fitness and was probably one of the least sporty children growing up. I got started because my husband thought it was a good idea for us to train together so I started and then he stopped! I missed him but its ok as now as my daughter Zara trains with me. To be honest I didnt think Id last as I can be a bit of a wuss, but I appreciated the benefits from this type of training and got addicted. It helped that the community was so positive and still is. I cant remember my first workout but I do remember thinking I didnt know I even had muscles there! What changes you have made since starting with us at CFNB? I workout 2-3 times a week! Ive committed & now its a part of my lifestyle. What is the best thing about training at CFNB? The best thing about training at CFNB .... the coaches and the members!! Its not an intimidating environment which so many gyms can be. The whole community is encouraging. The coaches never mind that after 6 years I still forget certain movements. Theyre always happy to remind me and always focus on technique. Tell us something about yourself that no one else would know? Something not many know about me. I started with CrossFit New Beginning back in April 2012. I hadnt trained prior to this so my first work out was a shock to the system, but I liked it so much I kept coming back!!! I cant remember what the workout was but it involved bear crawls and burpees and I remember being sore for a few days afterwards . What changes you have made since starting with us? Since starting with CFNB I certainly pay more attention to my health. I make a conscious effort to exercise at least 3-4 times a week and to eat healthily. . 19.01.2022 ISOLATION HERO OF THE WEEK Dabs Age: 38 Member since July 2018... How did you get started at CrossFit New Beginning and what was your first workout? I started with some personal training with Emily, one of the previous coaches. I had no idea I was doing CrossFit until I came home and told my husband about the training and he said, thats CrossFit and I thought, well that was fun so I kept going! After the PT, my first workout was Karen. I struggled to walk after that one! What changes you have made since starting with us at CFNB? I am fitter and stronger than I have ever been and I love getting up at 5am to train. Its the perfect start to my day What is the best thing about training at CFNB? 19.01.2022 MONDAY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT . Andrew Shaw Age: 43 Member since: October 2018... . How did you get started at CrossFit New Beginning and what was your first workout? I started because I wasn’t happy with my weight and the example I was setting for my children. I knew I wouldn’t last at a traditional gym and I had some friends talking up the CrossFit approach. I don’t recall the first workout but in the first week I remember feeling like my legs would never work correctly again. It just showed me how much I needed to be doing this. . What changes you have made since starting with us? Diet is the biggest thing I have changed. Finding the balance of everything so my body gets what it needs, not feeling like I am going without, not over doing it. Balance is key for me. . What’s the best thing about training at CFNB? The best thing about CFNB is a lot of the little things all combined. When I started, it stood out to me that everyone had a go and it isn’t only about the Big Dogs. Everyone is working hard to improve themselves and that gets noticed. . Tell us something about yourself that no one else would know? 18.01.2022 MONDAY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT - PART 1 . Bernie James Age: 26 Member since: February 2020... . How did you get started at CrossFit New Beginning and what was your first workout? My sister-in-law was a member at CFNB a couple of years ago. She was raving about the gym, particularly the community, the variety in the training and the fitness improvements she was seeing in herself. It got me curious as I was doing a fitness challenge with a couple of mates so I thought I’d give it a crack. My wife and I joined in February after returning from our honeymoon and we haven’t looked back. I don’t remember the first workout but within the first 2-3 workouts I encountered a lovely workout by the name of MURPH. I’d been doing a bit of running before joining the gym, so when they said 1.6KM run I remember thinking, this shouldn’t be so bad. Then they went through the rest of it: 100 pull ups, 200 push ups, 300 squats, and ANOTHER 1.6KM run. The soreness in my body over the following 3 days was everywhere. I haven’t done another one since, but keen to take MURPH again someday soon . What changes you have made since starting with us? Too many to list. But the biggest one I have become a man of the morning. I’ve always been the guy that couldn’t make it to school on time (despite living down the road), the student that couldn’t make a uni lecture on time if his life depended on it. My love of training has grown immensely since being at CFNB. I now look forward to the start of each of my days, and training at CFNB has helped me to put into practice a philosophy I’ve always loved, and now I live by: Win the morning, win the day. . . . . . #murph #winthemorningwintheday #strongerfitterhappiertogether #cfnb #crossfitnewbeginnin See more

18.01.2022 MONDAY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT . Name: Amy Sanders Age: 31 Member Since: July 2018... . How did you get started at CrossFit New Beginning and what was your first workout? Ive always enjoyed group fitness classes and team sports rather than working out on my own, so CrossFit was something Id been interested in for a while. So, when my husband said he was interested in giving it a go and suggested we try it out together - I was in! Im not really sure what my first workout was but Im pretty sure it involved kettlebell swings which Id never done before. I mostly just remember how my body felt in the days after! . What changes you have made since starting with us? The biggest change for me has been my mindset in going into a gym. I love the fact that CFNB and CrossFit has taught me to not worry and compare myself to others when Im training that Im only working for my best, and trying to learn and improve every time I come in for a session. And by trying to improve my own strength and skills in turn has led to thinking more about my own overall health more too. . Whats the best thing about training at CFNB? The people, hands down!! From the amazing coaches, who from the very beginning make you feel so welcome and are committed to really helping everyone at whatever level you are at to the awesome people who come in to train, who really have become like family. I have also really enjoyed training with hubby for really the first time ever and sharing something that has become such a big part of our lives together. . Tell us something about yourself that no one else would know? I cant remember the first workout but remember almost vomiting after it. . What changes you have made since starting with us? The biggest change Ive made is to my diet. Im very disciplined about WHAT I eat and WHEN I eat it. For me its all about quality and portion control. . Whats the best thing about training at CFNB? Definitely the best things about training at CFNB is the trainers, the quality of training and the community. The people make the box! . Tell us something about yourself that no one else would know? 16.01.2022 MONDAY COACH SPOTLIGHT . Kylie (Mumma K) Age: 45 .... How did you get into CrossFit? I was doing bootcamps with Matt when he decided to open CrossFit New Beginning with his mate James. I was so nervous as I had never touched a barbell or done any kind of gymnastics. It didn't take long before I was addicted though as I loved the feeling of wanting to work harder and wanting to do better each session . What was your first workout? 3 rounds for time of 1km run, 40 squats, 30 sit ups, 20 push ups and 10 pull ups. Given how much I love running I'm surprised I ever came back!! . 15.01.2022 MONDAY COACH SPOTLIGHT . Choni (Chantal Cali) Age: 41 .... How did you get into CrossFit? My previous business partner Matthew Baitieri and I were working together as PT’s at another gym and he convinced me to come and try CrossFit. . What was your first workout? Pretty sure it was a rowing and running WOD. I thought I was amazing straight up cause I flogged everyone ... I used to be a runner ... little did I know about CrossFit . How long have you been coaching? I have been coaching for 3 years and have been a PT for 11 years . What’s your fondest CFNB memory? Too many to choose from, but I’m going to have to go with AllStars in Melbourne in 2019 with an amazing group of humans Hubby got the call up, so being able to see him compete again was fantastic . 15.01.2022 MONDAY COACH SPOTLIGHT . Flaz (Aaron Flaherty) Age: 29 .... How did you get into CrossFit? I saw a repeat of the 2012 CrossFit games event Double Banger on ESPN. These super fit humans swinging sledge hammers and looking jacked It looked amazing and I wanted to look like that so I rang CFNB and started the next day What was your first workout? Helen (Running, Pull ups and KB swings). It was scaled to light Russian KB swings and Ring Rows and I smashed everyone because it was scaled back for me. I thought I was amazing ..... I’m not! But I definitely was hooked from then on. How long have you been coaching? I started casually coaching in October 2017 and came on full time in June 2018. I love being around like minded people and helping them change their lives for the better What’s your fondest CFNB memory? It’s awesome to see the joy on peoples faces when they achieve things that they never thought possible. However, my fondest memories are the Christmas parties and social events. To see everyone come together, joke, laugh, talk smack and enjoy each other’s company really makes it hit home how phenomenal our members are and how amazing the community we have is Tell us an interesting fact about yourself? I met my wife Beth, in what was each of our first CrossFit class. Since then (May 2014), we’ve both become coaches and now most of the people we spend our time with are from CFNB. 13.01.2022 MONDAY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT - PART 2 . Bernie James Age: 26 Member since: February 2020... . What’s the best thing about training at CFNB? The training and programming is awesome (I’m definitely a far more well-rounded athlete as a result of CFNB’s training), but it’s not even the BEST thing. That would have to be the people, both the members who train here, but most particularly the coaches. All of the coaches have been incredible in the 9 or so months that my wife and I have been here. We were members for a month, Covid-19 struck and we’ve witnessed and experienced them going above and beyond to help us continue our fitness journeys. On top of this, we’re expecting our first child at the end of this year! The coaches have been AWESOME in looking out for and after Monica. Checking in on her, scaling workouts for her and just constantly helping her out. For this, we are both hugely grateful to the coaches and the CFNB box. . Tell us something about yourself that no one else would know? I am a pretty big softy. Maybe that fact that I have 4 sisters has something to do with it, but despite taking after my dad in looks (losing my hair at the ripe old age of 24), I am my mother’s son when it comes to sensibilities. I’m a bit of a sucker for a tear-jerker in the cinemas. Most recently, I watched The Notebook for the first time in January on my honeymoon. I got started because a friend told me I couldnt do it. My first workout was at a local 24hr gym and that same friend told me to do FRAN as my intro to CrossFit. I did it Rx and it took me about 15mins to complete the workout. For the next 45mins I was on the floor, trying not to throw up . What changes you have made since starting with us? The biggest change Ive made is to focus on my progress and not to worry about competing with other people and their achievements. . Whats the best thing about training at CFNB? 08.01.2022 MONDAY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT . Ewan Cormack Age: 22.2 years Member since: September 2018... . How did you get started at CrossFit New Beginning and what was your first workout? I was looking for something different as I found it hard to train consistently at a commercial gym as I got bored of it quickly. I havent had that problem since making the change! I dont really remember my first workout that well but I do remember there were heavy front squats . What changes you have made since starting with us? The biggest change Ive made since joining would be taking a more holistic view of training and working on weaknesses rather than avoiding them. . Whats the best thing about training at CFNB? The community and the coaches! Always plenty of banter from the arvo crew and good programming and support from the coaches. . Tell us something about yourself that no one else would know? 07.01.2022 MONDAY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT . Lynn Gillett Age: 45 Member since: ... . How did you get started at CrossFit New Beginning and what was your first workout? Helen Sparkes introduced me. I knew Helen from our kids being in the same class at school. I’d been going to a chain gym for years and was looking for a something different. Helen always seemed to be dressed in gym gear, so I asked her about it. That was almost 7 years ago, and I haven’t looked back since! One of the earlier workouts I remember was running outside (this was at Anella, where running was allowed!) on a stinking hot day and wishing I was back at my old air-conditioned gym working out on the bike and reading a magazine (but not really!). That workout also involved a very unsympathetic Matt Baitieri and a hose. . What changes you have made since starting with us? I have learnt (and Choni is still trying to teach me this) that I can always push myself harder and I won’t die. There’s been many times when I’ve scaled a WOD and then regretted it. Also my nutrition habits have changed, I’ve been doing intermittent fasting for a year now. . What’s the best thing about training at CFNB? I know everyone says this - the community spirit! Everyone is positive and encouraging, and the coaches know every individual personally. . Tell us something about yourself that no one else would know? My parents opened one of the first Subway stores in NSW back in the 90s. This was in Liverpool St in the city. No one had ever heard of it back then! . . . . . #change #believeinyourself #intermittentfasting #communityspririt #strongerfitterhappiertogether #cfnb #crossfitnewbeginning See more

07.01.2022 MONDAY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT . Name: Jarrod Sharman (Sharmo) Age: 32 Member Since: March 2019... . How did you get started at CrossFit New Beginning and what was your first workout? I got started in the Army doing some similar functional movements and high volume and high intensity workouts during PT sessions. My first workout with CFNB was during midday class after my initial sign up consultation with Flaz. It was some deadlift technique and a 500m row sprint finisher. . What changes you have made since starting with us? The changes made while being part of CFNB are definitely better quality and consistency of movement, and being stronger during heavy lifts. . Whats the best thing about training at CFNB? The best thing about CFNB is being a part of a community with those who have equal goals and mindsets, surrounded by people who are down to earth who care about you and want you to be a part of their team. (Also razing up Choni and Kylie is pretty funny) . Tell us something about yourself that no one else would know? I come from a family of 10 kids. After 4 boys Mum kept the ultrasound video of her first daughter (Ashlin). Yep I thought it was a blank and taped Tiger Woods in the USPGA over it .... Dont her she will kill me . . . . . . #quality #consistency #stronger #community #strongerfitterhappiertogether #cfnb #crossfitnewbeginning See more

05.01.2022 MONDAY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT . Name: Abby Green Age: 37 Member Since: January 2020... . How did you get started at CrossFit New Beginning and what was your first workout? I started doing CrossFit back in Brisbane 3 years ago. When I found out we were moving to Sydney the first thing I did was google CrossFit gyms and came across CFNB - read the reviews stalked a little on FB. I knew from the moment I stepped in for my initial consult that CFNB was going to be my new home. All I remember is that my first workout involved a lot of burpees. . What changes you have made since starting with us? Biggest change Ive made so far is changing my mindset about nutrition and being consistent is key to achieving your goals. Everyday is a new day to improve yourself . Whats the best thing about training at CFNB? So many great things about CFNB - love the programming, all the coaches are friendly and supportive, you meet great people and the environment is not intimidating and friendly . Tell us something about yourself that no one else would know? Im an introvert (no one seems to believe me when I say that) . . . . . . #everydayisanewday #definitelynotanintrovert #strongerfitterhappiertogether #cfnb #crossfitnewbeginning See more

05.01.2022 MONDAY COACH SPOTLIGHT . Beth (Bethany) Age: 33 .... How did you get into CrossFit? I’d never even heard of CrossFit when a couple of friends talked me into coming to try it out. I loved the awesome vibe of the community when I got there so it was very easy to get hooked. . What was your first workout? I don’t actually remember doing my first workout (my husband who was also doing his first class at the same time reminds me it was Helen - Running, pull ups and KB swings) but I do remember having to run out the side door to vomit half way through . How long have you been coaching? Around 18 months now. I did my Level 1 back in 2019 just to have a bit more knowledge on the sport, not so much to coach. In classes I naturally want to help people out with little cues to help them nail a movement, I love to see the confidence and joy in someone when they finally hit that sweet spot with their technique. Eventually my hubby who was already coaching at CFNB got me onboard coaching a couple of classes a week . What’s your fondest CFNB memory? I love the comp days so much There was a CrossFit competition a couple of years ago called Women of Winter and we had about 2 dozen of our CFNB ladies get involved, half of them were doing their first comp ever. It was absolutely amazing to watch them all out there on the comp floor, giving it everything they had, and with the biggest smiles on their faces. I think I spent the WHOLE day wiping tears away watching them . Tell us an interesting fact about yourself? Before CrossFit I did about 4 years of pole dancing. I loved the strength component of it, but I dance about as well as a rock swims, so I traded in the pole for the barbell . . . . . #communityvibes #helen #crossfitlevel1trainer #crossfitcomp #poledancingdaysareover #strongerfitterhappiertogether #cfnb #crossfitnewbeginning See more

03.01.2022 Meet Coach Choni I left my nursing career around 13 years ago working in a Cardiothoracic ICU unit, mainly looking after patients post bypass surgery. I thought I could make a difference to peoples lives preventing them ever getting to that point, so I chose to go into the fitness industry. . Recently, I had the honour of scanning one of our beautiful members who managed to drop 7.6kg in our 4 week wholefoods and fasting challenge! There may have been some tea...rs from both of us, but it was one of the highlights of my PT/coaching career of 11 years. That feeling of making a difference to her life gave me so much joy and pride, she is amazing. Its the number 1 reason why I love what I do . CFNB has never been about training elite athletes ... its about creating the best versions of ourselves that we can be and doing it alongside some of the most amazing people. . 02.01.2022 Farewell 2020! . Ahh ... 2020, the year no one saw coming but what a year it’s been! . When you decide to buy a business, you sure as hell don’t plan to do it 2 months before being locked down due to a global pandemic! ... . But a global pandemic and lockdown not only forced us to think fast we were lucky enough that we still had excitement and enthusiasm on our side about owning this new business and it enabled us to deliver a service to you guys like nothing we’d have ever thought possible! . And it worked because you guys believed in us and wanted to see it work as much as we did! Sure, there was some fitness in there but it wasn’t the only thing, it was the community ... the laughs ... the silly games and competitions , that’s what kept us all going! ... (2020 will forever be remembered for the song Pump it Up, for Sohan cross country skiing in the middle of a roundabout and for the Caesars Cocktails team being a bunch of crazy’s!) . And then we reopened and that meant a whole lot of change and you guys truly rock cause you embraced every bit of it! Every little rule, every crazy idea, every restriction, every new system ... everything we asked of you, you guys did it with us! And just when you got used to something, we’d change it again, and true to form you all adapted again. Cause if there’s one thing we have all learnt from 2020 it’s adapt/change/pivot, whatever you want to call it, it’s the way to survive! . Thanks to each and everyone of you for trusting us and coming on this journey with us . We are truly blessed to have a super coaching team who have gone above and beyond this year to support our business. We definitely couldn’t have done it without them Thanks also to each of our partners who have been so understanding and supportive ... they are our behind the scenes superstars! . And lastly, a massive THANK YOU to each of you, our community, our friends, our family If there’s one thing we know for sure about 2020 and about our incredible community, it’s that we are #strongerfitterhappiertogether . 2021 is just around the corner and we know everyone is eager to see what it will look like ... that’s anyone’s guess!
