17.01.2022 A HUGE win for WA's Asylum Seeker community To all our members, donors, and supporters thank you so much for enabling us to be able to do this valuable a...dvocacy Check out the good news: Earlier this month, CARAD confirmed that the WA Health Department has made a change that, effective from 01 August 2020, Medicare ineligible people seeking asylum in WA are to be non-chargeable for public hospital treatment. This is the result of some intensive advocacy that our Client Services Manager, Esther, along with the WA Refugee and People Seeking Asylum Network (WARPSAN) and many others have been working on since early last year. Already we have seen three clients without Medicare who were in need of urgent hospital treatment now able to receive treatment without having to worry about huge hospital fees and how they would ever be able to repay them. This is a particularly heavy burden when the majority of them are without work rights and/or any income to repay such a debt that has the potential to impact any protection visa being issued to them. This is a hugely welcome change as CARAD has seen around 30% of people seeking asylum here in WA without Medicare eligibility. A significant portion of the complex case work the Client Services Team has supported clients with is in advocating for people in this situation to be able to access hospital treatment such as urgent surgery, 3rd degree burn treatment, various child development therapies, crucial diagnostic investigations for life-threatening conditions, treatment for communicable diseases, and also apply for fee waivers once they have accessed these things. A special thanks to all the numerous advocates who assisted in making this change happen. This could not have been achieved without all of you.
