25.01.2022 Carers Rights Day 2020 is today, Thursday 26 November and the theme for his year’s Carers Rights Day is ‘Know Your Rights’.
24.01.2022 World Mental Health Day: Molly’s Story Every year on 10 October, the World Health Organisation recognises World Mental Health Day. To acknowledge this day, we’d like to tell you about Molly*, 16. Molly has been diagnosed with Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. She lives with her mother who has a physical disability and mental health issues, and her brother who has Special Educational Needs. ... Molly has difficulty in social situations, forming friendships and regulating her emotions, and from the age of 11-15, subsequently had five unstable school placements. She also has low self-esteem, as well as a history of self-harm. Molly has high-risk behaviours, has been reported as a missing child on a regular basis and vulnerable to child sexual exploitation. Funded through Health and Social Care, Crossroads Care Richmond and Kingston upon Thames has been providing intensive support for Molly and her family over the past several years, when the family was at risk of breakdown. The team have worked closely with Molly and her mother to tailor a suitable care respite and support plan. This bespoke plan includes encouragement with school attendance (achieving a 100% success rate) and associated schoolwork/leaving qualifications and access to further education. This support has helped to ensure that Molly and the family feels encouraged, protected and safe. As the family was recently shielding, Crossroads Care provided vital support, food bundles, frozen food and medication deliveries. We are happy to say that Molly is now in stable education and is currently attending a local college; she has formed friendships and has also completed our six-week Transition Project course, as funded via Richmond Parish Lands Charity. *Name changed to protect privacy If you do need to speak with someone regarding our respite support services, please get in touch with us on 020 8943 9421 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm) or email us at [email protected](responded to within 24-48 hours). Please note: we are not an emergency service. For urgent medical help, please call your local GP surgery or dial 111. For emergencies, please call 999 for an ambulance or head to your nearest A&E department. Achieving for Children Hounslow and Richmond Community Healthcare

24.01.2022 Holistic Therapies Over six months ago, on 21 April 2020, we posted about our new therapy and multi-sensory rooms at our head office in Teddington. The funding for this transformed space was received from The Victoria Foundation's Annual Ball 2019. Created specifically for complementary massage and holistic therapies for Carers and the people they care for living in the London Borough of Richmond, we were looking forward to sharing this space with you. Unfortunately, due to... the COVID-19 outbreak, we had to put these new therapy rooms on hold. We are now pleased to say that our fully trained therapist, following government guidelines and PPE, can take bookings for stress release massage treatment and Reiki, for Carers and their cared-for living in the London Borough of Richmond. It is important that Carers’ take time out to care for their own well-being," Jess West, Massage Therapist and Crossroads Care Support Worker. Therapies and respite care will be offered subject to availability and funding; these can also be purchased privately. For more information, please call 020 8943 9421 or email [email protected]

22.01.2022 Carers Book Club This month, we began an online monthly Carers Book Club with Editor, Author and Crossroads Care Ambassador, Fiona Mitchell. Being a Carer, it can be difficult to take time out and relax but taking ‘time out’ is so important for our health and well-being. ... There is nothing that I enjoy talking about more than books, so I was in my element at our very first Carers Book Club, says Fiona. So far, we’ve chatted about trying to eke out time for reading; whether we prefer hardbacks, paperbacks, audio or Kindle and we’ve swapped suggestions for great reads. We even have some budding writers among the group, so it was great to swap some ideas about writing too. The consensus was that we all try to read ‘The Language of Kindness: A Nurse’s Story’ by Christie Watson which is one nurse's moving and compassionate account of her experience on many different wards during her time in the NHS. The next online Carers Book Club is scheduled for January 2021. If you are a Carer with us and would like to get involved, please contact us.
22.01.2022 Annual Review 2019-20 Our latest Annual Review is now available online. Our cover story is Matheus, 12, and his parents Joana and Vinicius, whom we’ve been supporting since 2012. It is an absolute pleasure to work with this family. From the moment you step through the door, you feel welcomed and appreciated. The love and devotion to their child is inspiring and it’s a privilege to give them the respite they so need and deserve, says Stephen Tonkin, Crossroads Care Support... Worker. 21.01.2022 Free flu jabs for Carers Winter flu season is upon us and this year Carers are being encouraged to get their flu jab. These are free and protect you as well as the person you care for. If you care for someone who could not manage without your support because they may be elderly, have a physical or learning disability, living with an addiction, dementia, mental health condition or a long term condition, who may be put at risk if you became ill - you are eligible for a free flu... jab. If you receive a Carer’s allowance, you are also entitled to a free flu jab. If you feel this applies to you, you can request a flu jab from your GP surgery or local pharmacist. If you would like a letter that ‘proves’ you have caring responsibilities and you are therefore entitled to a free vaccination, please contact the Richmond Carers Centre on 020 8867 2380 or email [email protected]
