25.01.2022 "The trainer will always do well to remember in the morning, before getting on his horse, how and to what extent this horse fulfilled the demands the day before.... Then he will wisely refrain from exaggerating his demands of the day. If his horse surprised him the day before by exceeding his expectations, he should not think that this unexpected progress is already confirmed from now on. After such a stroke of luck, he has to avoid trying to continue today where he left off after yesterday’s good lesson he would only be disappointed." 24.01.2022 To ALL of my Horses who I love so much PLEASE UNDERSTAND THIS... THE RULES! 1. I am human. You are horse. What I say goes. Please take that into consideration when you are standing on my foot.... 2. Spilled grain is not "fair game", especially when it is spilled in another horse's stable. It still belongs to that particular horse. You have no reason to go in and eat it. 3. Poop does not need to be hidden. I clean your stable every day. I will Find it. Do not hide it. 4. I do not need your help when I clean the barn, nor do I need your supervision, or even your presence. I have been cleaning the barn and stables ever since you lived here. I know what I am doing. Standing at the door staring at me, will not make me clean faster. 5. There is no need to go into the barn and help yourself to the feed. Meals Are given at specific times of the day. There is a feed schedule. You know the schedule. I know you know the schedule. You know that I know that you know the schedule. There is no need to help yourself. 6. Water buckets are not toys. Neither is the gate, rake, wheel barrow, whatever is in the wheel barrow, fence, or the occasional dog. 7. The wheel barrow is there for a reason. Please do not try to move it while I am cleaning your stable. 8. Just because I go into the Barn doesn't mean you automatically get food. There is other stuff in the barn. Stuff you don't want. Like the wormer and fly spray , shots, medicine. 9. Sheath cleaning will NOT be enjoyed...by anyone. 10. Water travels through the hose. If you are thirsty, do not stand on the hose. The water buckets will fill much faster. 11. Not everything has to be high drama. None of the following things will kill you: fly spray, plastic bags, balloons, hoses, Possums and other small rodents, or bright blue tarps. 12. Although I understand the need for you to go to the bathroom, it is not necessary to hold it in all day until the moment I finish cleaning your stable and put away the wheel barrow. 13. Accidents happen. However, I'm not altogether sure you're not trying to kill yourself. Next time you decide to impale yourself on some sort of object, please try to do it when it's not hailing, midnight, the weekend, or Christmas. 14. While I appreciate your need to be clean, pooping in your water bucket does not make my job easier, and it deprives you of water. Please find a new spot. 15. Whinnying as loudly as you can in my face does not make me feed you any faster. 16. I have to wait patiently too while you are having your shoes tacked on. There is no need to bite me.

19.01.2022 With so many of us in lock down and not able to go to clinics or lessons it’s still the perfect time for training our horses. I thought maybe it’s a good time for people to share their go to training tip. Let’s help each other out

18.01.2022 I know we aren’t at Level 4 thank goodness but here is some information regarding our horses and our welfare

16.01.2022 I was scared today. I was scared to get on, scared to walk out the yard because I had a bad ride the day before. One bad ride, and it made me scared. I didn’t know why. I’ve had 1000 bad rides. I’ve had 1000 falls. I’ve broken bones and bruised my pride on countless occasions, but today I was scared. ... Why? Because confidence is fragile. It takes months and years to build and seconds to lose and yet we are so careless with it. When we get on a horse, we wear a hat to protect our head. We wear body protectors, gloves, boots... We pay so much attention to protecting ourselves physically, we forget that our minds are not invincible, and our confidence certainly is not. Your bank of confidence needs regular deposits, not just from others... but from you. Self confidence is the most valuable currency in life. When you go to get on, and you hesitate, you falter and you start to ask yourself can I do this?, chances are, your account is almost empty. Every time you laugh and say oh no, I’m no good or so and so is 10x better than me, you make a withdrawal from that account, and before you know it, your account is empty and you’re scared to get on. But every time you say I’m really pleased with how that went or I think I rode that really well, your balance increases. We need to learn to give ourselves a break, pat ourselves on the back and allow ourselves to feel proud of where we are - after all, most of the time we’ve worked bloody hard to get there! Recognising your strengths is just as important as recognising your weaknesses. Never allow yourself or anyone else to empty that account. Confidence is valuable, don’t bankrupt yourself.

13.01.2022 Not certain who wrote this but it sure does bring back memories!! Don’t quit your passion!! To my fellow trainers. My hat is off to you..... Here's a glimpse of our life in reality. We have a passion, usually starts almost at birth, we go after it.... We work for free to learn. Muck stalls, buck hay, build fence, drag arenas, wash horses, sweep floors and a thousand other tasks just in hopes of learning something about these amazing animals. Endless and often thankless hours. To get lucky enough to get on some nasty suckers no one wants to ride. But you get on...maybe scared, maybe unsure, but you'd crawl in the middle of a red eyed lion just to prove to yourself that you can. You ride anything they run at you.... Then one day, usually years later, you strike out on your own. You become a trainer..But you still crawl on the bad ones and make the best you can of them. You still get jerked around trying to lead a knothead to the barn, still get rope burns, get kicked and pawed and bit. Have runaways, broncs, flippers and ones that smash your legs into the fence. Often times risk your life... Even easy day are abusive to your body. You are stiff and sore so often you don't even notice anymore. You ride, drive, learn, teach and soul search endless hours... What little money you actually make you buy or replace gear, struggle to get a truck and trailer, find a place to train out of...yeah it's a real cakewalk. Through endless hours of learning, failing, trying harder, wanting to quit, digging deeper, you learn to train well and maybe show well... You start winning, winning starts to become habit...surely you have made it...nope. You still ain't above mucking stalls or dragging the arena...you basically do what you did in the beginning..you just get paid a little more and have a different title... After all of this, day and night, you still work crazy odd hours and hunger to get better..If we took a pencil to what we earned per hour we'd go hang ourselves... Then...the clients. Some good, some bad, some amazing and some absolutely awful.. They go from singing your praises to saying what a poor job you did, how they expected so much more but fail to see what you had to go through to get their less than stellar, pissy, less than world class bred horse to the point that they can ride it, maybe even show it. Then they decide to ride with another trainer down the road and suddenly they forget how overjoyed they were with all you had accomplished on their baby. I know you know this...horses aren't the tough part of this business, people are. Hang in there fellow fools for horse. You are not alone... Remember why you started my friends...you started because of the love....hang in there, don't lose your passion, your heart and soul over people...keep doing it for the horse. See more

05.01.2022 Appreciate your trainer We spend way more hours at work than you could even imagine. We are here six if not seven days a week every week. We work holidays. We work weekends. And just because our office is outside and we get to be surrounded by beautiful animals the whole time does not mean we aren’t working. The barn to you is your sanctuary. It’s your escape. It’s your place to vent. Your place to relax. Your place to unwind. That is not what the barn is to us. While we ...have moments of serenity when everything is quiet, this is still our job. We are still on the clock. We still need to be on our game. Always. Our job is not just riding. We deal with all of you every day. Long before and long after we have come and gone from the barn. During dinners. During drinks with friends. During family time. On days off. We are here for you. We care. We care more than you could ever know. Each and every horse is a part of our soul. We know their mannerisms. We meticulously watch their weight, their movement, monitor what they eat and how much of it, how much they work, whether they are happy doing their job, and how to make them go in a way that pleases you without jeopardizing them. We stay up late with them if they are sick. We write down every time they batted an eyelash wrong. And we remember what they need when. We take pride in them going well for you. We listen to every flaw you find with them, even if it is in fact your flaw, and try to help them do their job better. When you are unhappy with how they go, we take it as a personal failure, and strive to never let it happen again, even if your expectations are unreasonable. We bend over backwards to make your horse perfect, even if what you’re asking for is a horse without spirit, or personality. We stand up for them when we can, trying our best not to make you upset in the process. They are our life’s work, and we know them inside and out. We listen to you. Whether you are rational or not. We remain calm when you bring the stress of your day job to the barn and take it all out on your horse and on us. We pick up the pieces when you’ve been unforgiving with your horse, who was simply surprised by your lack of patience after a long day. We are their rock, their shoulder to cry on, and yours. When we go home, we still reply to your texts and your emails and your calls. We are never off the clock. We take in stride as best we can your rants of frustration when your horse or your riding isn’t exactly where you want it to be exactly when you want it. We take the blame. For you. For your horse. For the rest of your life. For everything. And yet here we are. Still showing up. Still being here for you. For your horse. No matter how you treat us. Regardless of whether you deserve us. We are here. Appreciate your trainer.

03.01.2022 Before backing your youngster please read - A horse ages roughly 3 times faster than a human. So a 90 year old human is a 30 year old horse. Both very old, usually arthritic, don’t have many of their original teeth left, and very likely retired and enjoying the finer things in life.... A 25 year old horse is a 75 year old human. Still works so far. A 20 year old horse is a 60 year old human. At that point where the body doesn’t work like it use to but the brain is all there and wants to be active. A 13 year old horse is a 39 year old human. Middle aged, prime of their life where their knowledge and physical ability are about equal. So let’s get down to the babies and work our way up. A 3 year old horse is a 9 year old child. A child. Not ready for work by a long stretch. We have moved past sending children down the mines. A 4 year old horse is a 12 year old child. Often will do odd jobs for pocket money, maybe a paper round, mowing lawns etc. Basically a 4 yo horse can start a bit of light work to earn their keep. A 5 year old horse is a 15 year old teenager. Think they know it all, cocky, and ready to up their work and responsibilities. Still quite weak and not fully developed so shouldn’t be at their physical limit but can start building strength. A 6 year old horse is an 18 year old human. An adult. Ready to work hard. Pushing your youngster too hard too young will result in failure of many body parts. Joints, tendons, ligaments as well as their brains. Waiting one year at the beginning can give a horse another 10 years of useful working life. Be patient with your pride and joy!
