24.01.2022 Greetings all. How are we going now that Winter has descended and daylight is just about at it’s minimum? To be honest, I think it’s been relatively mild so far but there’s a long way to go until September springs it’s vernal splendour upon us. Hopefully by then we will be able to compete again and show off our Melbourne winter physiques! The latest guidelines from both AV and VMA are that whilst group training of up to 20 people can take place, there is to be no competition.... Club rooms and social facilities are to remain closed and social distancing restrictions are to apply. Not so easy to maintain 1.5m at an athletics track when lanes are only 1.2m wide but at least we can get out there and exercise with friends. I know Andrew Egginton has been carving a rut in the Lilydale and Albert park tracks each week and has been sighted doing same in Torquay recently. He’s certainly spreading himself around to promote running, is he taking a leaf out of Rob Italia’s book? It’s been great to see the many photos posted by Masters regulars of their Sunday morning trail runs. It really emphasises the benefit of group training. I’ve been lucky enough to do some sessions with a group of masters sprinters over the last few months which has kept us active and competitive. The Doncaster track reopened 3 weeks ago and Box Hill is open as of last weekend. To my knowledge East Burwood remains closed. I should also mention the great work of Russ Dickinson in keeping Footprints so interesting and amusing without any competition results to report. Great stuff Russ. Sadly, we have to advise of the passing of Margaret Yates, wife of John. Margaret was in her early 90s and had battled a debilitating condition for some time. The stalwart devotion of John was evident to all at the club and necessitated his absence from Tuesday nights to care for Margaret. His quiet contribution to our club was made all the more apparent in his absence. On behalf of all at Croydon masters, VMA and the athletics community in general, we offer our deepest condolences to John and family. Vale Margaret. See more

22.01.2022 IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL MEMBERS - PLEASE READ

20.01.2022 Greetings all and happy new year to everyone. Hope you all had a great festive season and that the waistlines and livers didn’t suffer too much. Just a reminder that Croydon Masters is back on the track this Tuesday, 7th January, 7pm. Look forward to seeing everybody again and to keep on keeping on in 2020. Grant Murfett

20.01.2022 Greetings everyone. In a year that has provided a seemingly endless run of disappointments, yesterday was surely the nadir for our club as we received the terrible news of the sudden passing of Russ Dickinson. Having suffered a massive stroke on Sunday, Russ died on Monday morning. Russ was a decades long fixture at Croydon, participating in everything at one time or another and finding his forte’ in race walking at which he excelled both locally and internationally. He was ...Continue reading

16.01.2022 Greetings all. A slight hiccup in proceedings for the Christmas party. The gathering limits for households as announced on Sunday restrict visitors in the home to 15. As we are likely to exceed 15, Andrew has proposed that we have an outdoor get together at Badger weir picnic ground, which is a short drive from Healesville and very picturesque. Check it out on the website and let us know your thoughts. Cheerio.

15.01.2022 Greetings all, it’s been a while since we last convened for a social track session. Unfortunately, it looks like we won’t be back anytime soon as the federal an...d state governments have indicated that organised sport gatherings will be well down the list when it comes to relaxing current restrictions. Having said all that, however, we can still be active and try to maintain some sort of routine for keeping fit and healthy. I think it would be a great idea to share any innovative isolation workouts,(and possibly amusing too). In doing so we can keep in contact and maybe help each other if some are struggling with motivation. We all know how hard fitness is to get back if we lose it at our age so let’s encourage everyone to get at it! I was at Croydon track today doing a few sprints and saw several masters athletes from the area including Col Page. I’ve also seen Angela Edwards and Deb Voogt at Ringwood and enjoyed a quick chat. Hoping everyone and their families are healthy and coping, look forward to seeing everybody as soon as allowed. Cheerio, Grant. See more

14.01.2022 The Lindsay Thomas was cancelled on Wednesday - with good reason. But thankfully, it's been re-scheduled for Weds 29th January.

13.01.2022 Greetings everyone. Well the weather has certainly changed and as the temperature has gone up so has the wind speed. As usual for athletes in training, it’s always a head wind. I’ve never been able to work out how, between warm up and proper training, the wind inevitably swings against the direction you plan to run in. I’m sure it’s not just me. Great news from East Burwood venue manager, Chris Worsnop, is that they will be back on track this Thursday 19/11. We congratulate ...Chris and team in getting up and running so soon. As with Doncaster venue, strict limitations and guidelines are to be enforced including the locking of the track to quarantine masters competition and reporting of any members of the public who refuse to leave to the police. Regardless of our personal opinions on this somewhat draconian measure, it forms part the conditions of reopening and must, therefore, be abided by. Regarding Croydon, I have been in contact with Maroondah council who are sympathetic to our situation but, as required by law, have the same impositions as all other venues. The impassable stumbling block is that we cannot quarantine the track for our competition exclusively and no amount of signage is going to deter some people from just walking on. The carpark is another issue as it directly abuts the track and we cannot prevent anyone from using it or from walking through the area between track and pavilion where we congregate. So, unfortunately, the open accessibility of our track which has always been a positive is working against us. Regrettably, at this stage it seems unlikely that Croydon masters will be convening until the new year. Some informal Christmas get together would be great for us all in my opinion so let’s keep that in mind at least. Lastly, the Croydon little athletics has been given the nod to begin this Saturday, 21/11, which is great news after so long without any sport and it’s associated socialising for the kids. Well done to the Dux family who have worked hard to make this happen. Under 18 sport has far less restrictions, particularly in the area of allowing spectators and parents to attend and as the whole facility is used, the public can be excluded easily. We wish them success not too many headaches! I think that’s all for now, it’s enough anyway, so keep well, keep fit and try to keep smiling. Cheers, Grant. See more

12.01.2022 G’day all, hope everyone is still doing well and hanging in there awaiting the lifting of the great wet blanket we’re currently under. The latest announcement from Spring st Stalin, aka Dan, is that from midnight tonight outdoor gatherings of up to ten people are allowed in non-contact activities. Whilst being non-contact might curb Allan Wood’s social life, it means a lot more flexibility in being able to gather for sporty/social outings without the threat of incurring a hefty Spring st subsidy, aka fine. Unfortunately the weather is deteriorating as the restrictions are lifting but we look forward to the eventual easing of shutdown to the point at which we can get back to the track as a club and have a run, walk, chat, drink etc. Cheerio for now and good health! Grant.

10.01.2022 Greetings all. Further to recent posts regarding Christmas get together. With the 15 person household limit in place until 14/12, we will go with the picnic at Badger weir option. Sunday 13 December from 11am to whenever. There are bbqs onsite and Andrew will get there a bit earlier to stake a claim on some real estate for sitting in. Please bring the usual bbq stuff, ie; food, drink, chair and maybe a rubbish bag. Let’s all bring a cheap novelty gift for the Kris Kringle and hope for favourable weather. Looking forward to seeing everyone for some Christmas cheer. Grant.

10.01.2022 Greetings all. It is with much sadness that we advise our members and friends of the death of Ron Boyne’s wife Barbara who passed away after battling pneumonia. As we all know, Ron is a stalwart of Croydon masters barely missing a night for as long as I’ve known him and no doubt longer. On behalf of all at Croydon and masters athletics across Melbourne, we offer our sincerest condolences and sympathies to Ron and family at this most difficult time. Vale Barbara.

07.01.2022 Greetings everyone. With the continued easing of coronavirus related restrictions, competition time is getting closer at Croydon. Some of you may be aware that Doncaster venue is returning to competition tonight (9/11) which is great news and we congratulate them on getting back on track. Whilst we would love to be also recommencing, specific venue differences create additional problems for Croydon. Principally, Doncaster are required to quarantine the track for their use onl...y. This is achievable as the track is fully enclosed by a fence and the gate is to be locked with only masters attendees admitted. No random public access is permitted under their return to competition plan. This circumstance is likely achievable at East Burwood track as well. However, as we all know too well, trying to keep members of the public off Croydon is nigh on impossible as we cannot quarantine the track. Both AV and VMA are producing a generic return to completion compliance document which will be available to all clubs. On receipt, we will present our plan to Maroondah council for approval. At this stage, strict track use conditions still apply and use of the club/social rooms is not permitted. This particularly impacts Croydon as there is no other cover. Croydon little athletics is also endeavouring to get up and running as soon as possible which we all hope will be sooner rather than later. As soon as we are in a position to move forward we will advise everyone as to our progress. Finally, last Thursday, Gunther, Andrew, Phil Urqhart and I attended Russ Dickinson’s funeral at which several speakers waxed lyrical on his unique life. Great sentiments, much humour and a lot of love were shared by all and we thank Kath and Jane for inviting us to see him off. Take care everyone. Grant. See more

05.01.2022 Hello again. Thanks everyone for the great and overwhelmingly positive response to the proposed Christmas get together. Accordingly Andrew and Helen have formally pronounced the 13th December as the day of gathering. We are cordially invited to convene at 15 Birdwood avenue, Healesville from 11am onwards. Plan is for a bbq so please bring something for the hot plate and perhaps a salad to share as well as some liquid refreshment as you see fit. Question without notice mr speaker: should we each bring a cheap gift for a Kris Kringle? Look forward to seeing everyone, Cheerio for now. Grant.

04.01.2022 Greetings all. Hoping everyone had a joyous Christmas and new year’s celebration. Our latest update is that we have a firm date for recommencement of Croydon masters competition. We have proposed that Tuesday 2nd February at the usual time of 7.00pm will be our first meeting for 2021. Barring any prohibition from Maroondah council, we will proceed on the assumption that this goes forth. Both athletics Victoria and VMA have provided up to date protocols by which we will have ...to abide, however these are unlikely to compromise track activities and relate mostly to hygiene and cleaning necessities. Indoor density limits of 1 person per 4m2 still apply meaning we’ll be unable to use the club rooms nor will there be any shared food and/or drinks. More precise advice will be outlined in the week before returning but for now we can look forward to getting together again on the 2/2/2021. Thanks, Grant. See more

03.01.2022 Athletics Victoria (AV) advises that in the light of the rapid development in recent days of with respect to the coronavirus pandemic, the decision has been mad...e to cancel the 2020 Flack Advisory Group Victorian Masters Track and Field Championships due to take place this weekend at Bendigo. The decision has been made in consultation with Victorian Masters Athletics (VMA) and Bendigo Athletics, and has not been made lightly. AV, VMA and Bendigo Athletics have made this decision in the interests of the health and safety of our athletes, officials, volunteers, staff and general public. This is in line with the approach other sports and public events here in Australia and around the world have taken with regards to mass gatherings in past days. While other sports can conduct their competitions in the absence of crowds, athletic events require large numbers of officials and volunteers to proceed. The masters event also sees many age groups compete that are in the susceptible age range of the coronavirus, and therefore we are not willing to risk the safety of these athletes. Unfortunately due to AV, VMA and Bendigo Athletics being not-for-profit organisations we are unable to reimburse travel or accommodation costs. It is up to the individual to take action in regards to these costs. See more

02.01.2022 Greetings everyone. It seems our much desired return to normality has been further delayed, without justification in my humble and amateur opinion. It’s more important than ever to keep each other motivated to make an effort at exercise, not necessarily for competition but just to keep moving. At the very least it helps to keep fit, burn a few calories and to enjoy the limited socialising it allows us. Last Wednesday at Croydon it was great to have a chat with Russ and Murray... and even bumped into my nephew, Jack,as he pounded out an absurdly paced workout. Youth, wasted on the young I say. The Dux family were all present, except Ryder who was busy terrorising the kindergarten class while Nathan, the three ladies and I soaked up some vitamin D. Plenty of people using the tracks, paths and ovals in the area as I take my daily walk which is great to see. On a very sad note, we learned of the death of the legendary masters athlete; Jimmy Sinclair. Jimmy passed away in hospital on Friday morning aged 96. Most of us have met Jimmy at least once through inter venue events or State and National championships at which he was a regular competitor and perennial champion. He was featured in an ABC produced documentary called Pacemakers leading up to the world championships in Perth 2016 at which won Silver in the 100m behind his great rival from Peru,Hugo Delgado Flores. Their respective times were: 20.14 & 20.61. The pair again took the quinella in the 200m clocking 42.98 & 44.87 at the age of 92. Jimmy’s last major competition was at the Oceania championships in McKay 2019 where he won the 60m, 100m & 200m as a freshly minted 95 year old. Many of us from Croydon were also there and remember his infectious and self-deprecating smile as he collected another medal. Was there ever a more youthful nonagenarian? So we farewell Jimmy Sinclair, a champion athlete and champion gentleman, one of the rare people about whom we simply say. I was glad to have met him. Grant. See more

02.01.2022 Greetings all. Great to see so many of our members back at the track last night (Tuesday), and sporting the club singlet. Everyone embraced the COVID protocols with a great attitude making it as easy as could be hoped for. Only the weather failed to play it’s part, serving up a chill-laden southerly which saw many in the hoodies. Ahh Melbourne, seasonal predictability is overrated anyway. Thanks to everyone who attended, competed and took part in our minutes silence remembering our friends who have left us over the last year. Hope to see you all next week. Grant.

02.01.2022 Greetings everyone. Further to the most recent post, we can advise that Croydon Masters will be back on track on Tuesday February 2nd from 6.45pm. Certain requisite formalities will need to be instituted but these won’t significantly affect our competition. The exception being that we will be unable to use the club room for meetings or to store personnel possessions,eg, bags. The following are required under the return to play guidelines issued by Athletics Victoria and VMA.... -Appointment of COVID safety officer to ensure compliance. -Sign in to include minimum of name and contact phone number. -Induction to protocols for all attendees. -Maintain 1.5m separation and avoid interaction in enclosed spaces. -Practice good hygiene, sanitizer to be available. -Sanitise any shared equipment,eg javelin, Shot put between use by individuals. -Club room use restricted to admin and first aid only. Nominated persons only as density of one person per 4sqm only allowed. Weekly venue fee of $5 per attendee will continue and cash will be accepted but please bring CORRECT MONEY to avoid handling change. Notes and coins will be deposited in an antiseptic fluid container. For our first week back we thought we’d have a slightly shortened program to allow time to welcome everyone and go through the protocols. Firstly, a three lap memorial walk to remember those who have left us in the past year, followed by an 80m sprint, 5 lap run, 200m sprint and throw a javelin. Feedback always welcome. A regular program for the next few months will be available on the night. Regarding refreshments, we won’t be able to use the kitchen but all are welcome, in fact encouraged, to bring a snack for themselves which they can offer to share around. (Officially communal food is discouraged.) It’s been a long wait for us, particularly as other venues have been able to restart, but let’s get as many of our members down to have a meaningful return and support getting masters back in action. Please let anyone who may not have Facebook or get our emails, know that we’re back. Cheerio for now. Grant. See more

02.01.2022 Hi all, talking with Andrew Egginton last night, he raised the idea of having a Christmas bbq at his place in Healesville. The proposed date is Sunday December 13 from 11am onwards. Canvassing interest before confirming so if you would like to come please reply via email or message on this page. Cheers, Andrew & Grant.
