25.01.2022 CHOCOLATE! Now that we have your attention, we thought we would give you a timely reminder about the dangers of chocolate for your pets. This article was written by our very own Dr Joanna Paul for her hilarious and informative blog Creature Clinic. It includes what actions you should take if your cheeky pet does steal chocolate off the table/bench and also what signs to look out for if chocolate toxicity was to occur. Remember! Always leave your chocolate hidden away i...n the pantry or at a height that they simply cannot get to. Included are our open hours over the easter weekend: CLOSED on Good Friday, re-opening for emergencies and urgent appointments only from 8:30-12 noon on Easter Saturday and 9:30-12 noon Easter Sunday and Monday. In case of an emergency after hours, please call the Centre for Animal Referral & Emergency on 9417 6417. http://creatureclinic.com/chocolate-toxicity-dogs/

20.01.2022 UPDATE - CHANGE TO CLINIC PROCEDURES TO MINIMIZE THE RISK OF COVID - 19!!! With the announcement made by the Prime Minister last night that Victoria will be adhering to stage 1 restrictions, and with Veterinary Clinics being considered essential services (at least for now), Croydon Pet Hospital will continue to operate through our normal openings hours. However, it will NOT quite be business as usual - there are a few changes we have made to reduce infection risk. W...e have split our staff into two completely separate teams. This means that if one team is impacted by coronavirus, we will still have a second team who will be able to care for, and provide services to, your pets. Feel free to contact us find out what days your preferred vet is now working. We are asking our clients to defer non-urgent appointments and elective procedures (including surgeries). If you are uncertain as to whether your pet needs to be seen, please contact us by phone for advice. We ask everyone who enters the Clinic to please respect our STRICT social distancing policies: 1. Please stand back behind the red and white tape-lines we have set up in the reception and consult rooms and avoid unnecessary contact with the reception desk and other surfaces 2. Please have ONE pet owner per consult in the clinic 3. We would like to restrict the number of people in the waiting room to the absolute minimum (feel free to call the clinic on your arrival then wait in your car until we are ready to see your pet) 4. Maintain a minimum distance of 2m from other people in the clinic, including staff where possible 5. Use alcohol sanitizing gel on arrival (available in the foyer, reception area and waiting room) 6. Pay with card if possible (we are cleaning our Eftpos machine after EVERY transaction) 7. Please call ahead to order food and medication, and ideally prepay over the phone 8. If you are unwell, considered high risk or self isolating please phone us to discuss how we can safely care for your pet. Our normal thorough cleaning and disinfection routine has been stepped up to reduce the risk of Covid-19 for our staff and clients. Help us keep you (and us) safe!!

19.01.2022 Meet handsome Harlem! On Friday night this beautiful 6 month old Great Dane X, was rushed into CPH after being hit by a car. Unfortunately he had sustained serious injuries to his front right leg. Dr Haylee, Nurse Kirsty and the team were able to give him much needed pain relief before taking some X-rays to assess the damage. He was stabilized, a splint applied to his fractured leg (check out those X-rays!! ) and the decision was made to transfer him to CARE for urgent surg...ery. Just a few days later, Harlem was back for his post surgery check at the clinic, and he was super happy to show off his new war wound. He is adjusting to the tripod life very quickly, much to his worried owners relief and still loves his visit to the vet clinic. This brave boy will be back next week to have his sutures removed and we cant wait to see his smiling face again. (Photos posted with permission from Harlems owners)
18.01.2022 Happy International Womens Day to our talented and dedicated team and to all our amazing clients! We should all be proud of what we achieve every day!!
17.01.2022 To our valued clients, CPH is still currently OPEN. As we continue to run business as usual, we want to ensure we are doing all we can to prevent the spread of illness and minimize the threat of COVID-19. We will be reducing foot traffic in our clinic, but rest assured our usual high standards of care and attention remain the same. When you arrive for your scheduled appointment, please either remain in your car and call the clinic on 9727 4004 or ring the doorbell. A member o...f our team will meet you outside and collect your pet. The vet will then examine your pet while conducting the consultation with you via the telephone. All necessary tests and treatments will be carried out with your informed consent as normal. If you require a food purchase or need to pick up medications, we ask that you phone the clinic to pre-pay your items and a staff member will bring these out to you when you arrive. Please note we will not be accepting cash payments at this time. We ask that you pay over the phone with a credit or debit card. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. A note regarding medications: as long as we are able by law to remain open, so too will our suppliers, so stocking up on large amounts of medications is not required at this stage. Will still ask you to please refrain from visiting the clinic if you are experiencing any cold or flu like symptoms, have been in contact with anyone also experiencing similar symptoms, or have traveled overseas in the past 4 weeks. We acknowledge these are new and trying times and many people are confused about the current restrictions, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions about any of our new policies. We thank you for your understanding and patience during these challenging times.

15.01.2022 COVID-19: Metropolitan Melbourne Stage 4 Restrictions After the Premiers announcement on new restrictions to business operations, we would like to assure our clients that Veterinary clinics remain an essential service. Veterinary clinics are permitted to continue operating with a few changes to normal operations. Below is a summary of how these new changes may affect your visit to our clinic: Face coverings are now mandatory for all Victorian residents that a...re 12 years of age and over and we ask all clients to wear face masks at all times when speaking to a member of our staff, even if you are still sitting in your car. A curfew is now in place in metropolitan Melbourne and will be in operation from 8pm-5am, but one of the reasons people are allowed to leave their home is for health care -Taking your pet to the vet is listed under health and care. As our hours fall within this curfew it is unlikely that this will affect visits to CPH, but if you find yourself needing to visit an emergency clinic afterhours, this is permissible. For veterinary care or collection of supplies from a veterinary clinic, clients MAY travel further than 5kms. In Metropolitan Melbourne, only one person per household should be obtaining services or products with the exception of accompanying dependants (children or at- risk persons). This means only one adult should attend the clinic with your pet (plus any dependents). We realise this is a stressful time for all Victorians and we appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe environment for our clients and our staff members. Stay safe, we will all get through this together!
14.01.2022 Whippet love! Dr Haylee and the girls at CPH had the pleasure of meeting this little gem, Ruby! Ruby was in for her 3rd puppy vaccination and check up, which also included lots of cuddles from the staff! It is so nice to have these cuties in at the clinic to brighten our days during these challenging times! ... This little girl is absolutely divine! See more
14.01.2022 We are fortunate to have a lot of parkland near our clinic in Croydon. This means our patients have lots of opportunities to stretch their legs and exercise. As the weather warms up (particularly once the maximum temperature climbs above 20 degrees), we do need to be aware that these bushy areas are also home to snakes. While snakes will do their best to keep away from dogs and cats, sometimes they will cross paths and this can be potentially deadly. Snake venom contains a ...number of different toxins which can cause severe problems to pets. Look out for the following signs that may indicate your pet has been bitten: 1 Weakness the main toxin in snake venom will cause paralysis. This is commonly first seen as wobbliness in the back legs but will progress to total collapse and difficulty breathing if left untreated 2 Vomiting and excessive salivation 3 Dilated pupils (the dark centre of the eye is enlarged, even in bright light) 4 Strange or altered bark 5 Bleeding snake venom affects clotting so wounds will not stop bleeding like they normally would 6 Generalised pain or painful muscles 7 Discoloured urine red or dark brown If you see your pet bitten by a snake or if they have any of the above symptoms, it is worth bringing them to the vet immediately to be assessed. We have life-saving anti-venom stored at the clinic it is of most benefit if given as soon as possible after a bite.
14.01.2022 Dental Month is off and running at Croydon Pet Hospital with quite a few patients going home with fresh breath, healthy mouths and a dental show bag after having their teeth attended to by our vets and nurses. The pictures below show the importance of keeping on top of your pets dental hygiene and getting a scale and polish done sooner rather than later. The first two dogs were lucky and required no teeth extractions, but the second (who had much more severe tartar and ...periodontal disease) was not so lucky, requiring a total of 11 teeth to be removed. It is important to remove any loose or damaged teeth as they cause ongoing pain and discomfort for our pets. Dogs and cats generally do amazingly well and eat pretty normally with fewer, or even no, teeth. If you think your pet may need their pearly whites attended to, contact our team - there are still a few spaces remaining during dental month which means you get a 20% discount* and a dental goody-bag! * applies to dental specific procedures, excludes medications, blood tests and IV fluid therapy. 13.01.2022 To our valued clients, It turns out the power outage has now been cancelled, due to reasons we are unsure of. 12.01.2022 COVID-19 UPDATE Croydon Pet Hospital cares passionately about the wellbeing of our patients, clients and staff. In these uncertain and scary times, we would like to reassure you that, on top of maintaining the usual high standards of cleanliness and hygiene at our clinic, we will also be taking the following increased safety measures to reduce the potential risk of spread of Covid-19 : We have upgraded our normal high standard of hand cleaning and sanitation to include... application of an alcohol-based hand sanitiser before and after every patient and client interaction We will continue to provide hand sanitiser at the Reception desk for our clients to use when you come to visit us We would also ask that you consider the health and safety of our staff when bringing your pet into the clinic. Ours is not a job where we can simply work from home to avoid the risk of Coronavirus, so to assist us in reducing the risk of staff illness we ask that if you are unwell or experiencing any signs of fever, sore throat, fatigue, coughing or shortness of breath and your pet needs to be seen for a condition that you think cannot wait, please advise us that you are unwell and PLEASE STAY HOME. We can determine if your pet does in fact need to be seen, and then we would ask you to have a friend or family member bring your pet to the clinic on your behalf. If you are well, please come and see us, but please adhere to the following guidelines: Maintain a 2 metre distance between you and all other people (staff and other clients) Have your dog on a lead and your cat in a carrier, and do not approach other clients or their pets Stand back from the reception desk If you need to cough or sneeze, please cover your nose and mouth with your elbow and do not wipe your hands on anything Where possible, please leave your children and other family members at home (the less people who are in contact with others, the better) Medications & Food If your pets are on ongoing medications or special diets (especially prescription diets), please consider how much you have on-hand and think about ordering extra to have a few weeks supply. It is highly possible that supplies of specialised foods and medications may be interrupted, and at worst, we may even have to close our clinic temporarily if governmental restrictions are put into place.
11.01.2022 A little appreciation post for our amazing clients! We know the changed working conditions at CPH pose a challenge for clients and staff alike, but you, our amazing clients, have been handling these changes with tolerance and patience and we are so grateful to you for making a difficult time so much easier! We have had some lovely, positive feedback about the steps we are taking to keep you and us safe, and that makes us so thankful to you all! We are all in this together! ...Stay safe! We will get through this! As a distraction from the doom and gloom, here is beautiful Archie (pictured with Senior Nurse Kirsty) who came in for his 12 week puppy vaccination with Dr Jess yesterday... such a beautiful little man
10.01.2022 Tomorrow is going to be a scorcher Please remember to keep your pets as cool as possible during these warm days. Lots of fresh water and shade if they cannot stay inside (please try your hardest to allow your pets to be inside with you in the cooling), avoid walking your dog - horrible burns can be sustained from walking on hot footpaths. Please do not leave your pet in the car at any time - temperatures can rise to far more than double than what it is outside!... We also ask our clients if you could kindly leave out a bowl or bucket of water for wildlife! Should you have any concerns about your pet and how they are coping during the sweltering heat, please contact us on 9727 4004. Stay safe everyone!
09.01.2022 On Saturday night, many of the CPH team dressed up to attend the Veterinary Mental Health Charity Ball hosted by Lets Talk About Feeling Ruff. Funds raised on the night support charities such as Love Your Pet Love Your Vet, Vet Life Australia and Flynns Walk. The suicide rate amongst vets is approximately four times the national average, being about 1 suicide every 12 weeks. The evening was a great chance to take time out to focus on mental health within our profession, as well as enjoy a great dinner and dancing with our wonderful work family. Special mention to our very own super-vet Dr Haylee Catley for all her hard work behind the scenes as a member of the organizing committee.
07.01.2022 In amongst some of the COVID craziness, the girls at CPH had the absolute pleasure of having a snuggle with the beautiful little Levi on Saturday, after coming in for his puppy health check. We are pleased to report he is perfectly healthy and we look forward to seeing him next time at the clinic. #croydonpethospital #puppylove #vetlife #dachshundsofinstagram #vetnurselife #vetclinic
06.01.2022 COVID-19 update To our valued clients, CPH is still currently OPEN and we are definitely classed as an essential service. When you arrive for your scheduled appointment, please either remain in your car and call the clinic on 9727 4004 or ring the doorbell. A member of our team will meet you outside and collect your pet. The vet will then examine your pet while you wait outside and then will communicate with you after the check up on how everything has gone. All necessary tests and treatments will be carried out with your informed consent as normal. 06.01.2022 To our valued clients Due to another scheduled power outage this Monday 23rd March, the clinic will be closed from 9am. We have made contact with our clients who had pre-booked appointments to reschedule these. We will have fewer staff on from 7:30am until the power goes out at 9am, and then again from 5pm when it is meant to come back on. ... We will keep you updated as to whether this changes at all Monday morning. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding. The Team at Croydon Pet Hospital
05.01.2022 Vets are essential - its official! The following statement was released this afternoon from the office of the Hon. David Littleproud, Minister for Agriculture The Federal Government considers the role of veterinarians essential to the agricultural sector and therefore to our nations food security but also in protecting companion animals and our nations wildlife. ... The Federal Government has not put any restrictions on veterinarians other than the practice of social distancing and hygiene practices during the COVID-19 crisis. Croydon Pet Hospital will continue to provide urgent Veterinary care for your pets, albeit under the altered conditions mentioned in our previous posts.
05.01.2022 IMPORTANT UPDATE The Victorian Government has announced that all non-essential services will be closed imminently. As yet we are unclear as to whether the Veterinary Profession is deemed an essential service, but the Australian Veterinary Association is lobbying to have us classified as essential. We will be open tomorrow morning from 7:30am until the scheduled power outage at 9am, then again from 5pm-7pm (provided the power outage finishes on time). Clients wishing ...to order extra pet foods or medications for their pet should call the clinic prior to 9am tomorrow to allow us time to order in any items we may not have in stock. We will now be deferring elective visits (such as vaccinations, routine check ups and medication checks) and non-urgent surgeries (like desexings and minor dental procedures) to prioritize visits for urgent appointments for unwell animals. We ask all clients who are coming to the clinic from tomorrow onwards to please call the clinic when they arrive (prior to coming inside). Our staff members will come and collect your animal from the car and then you will be called for a phone consultation. We appreciate that this will be a huge change from the normal process but we want to do all we can to keep our clinic staff free of Covid-19 so we can continue to remain open and continue to attend to your pets when they are in need. We are also putting CASH payments on hold (due to the risk of contamination) , and would ask all accounts be settled by credit or debit card (credit card processing can be done over the phone to even further reduce contamination risks). We appreciate your understanding and patience as we navigate this difficult time and try to reduce the risk of spread of Covid-19 and keep our staff healthy so we can continue to help your pets. The Team at Croydon Pet Hospital

04.01.2022 We would like to provide some information to our clients to highlight some of the inaccuracies in the reporting of the risks associated with COVID-19 and our domestic pets. While COVID-19 seems to have emerged from an animal source, the predominant route of transmission of COVID-19 appears to be from human-to-human. Spread of the virus between people is thought to occur mainly via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or when people come in... contact with infected sputum (hand-to-mouth transmission). Currently, there is no evidence that companion animals can be infected with COVID-19 from humans. There is also no evidence of spread from domestic pets to humans. Scientists are still finding out more about the properties of this virus and new information is being released every day. Please refer to the World Health Organisation ( https://www.who.int ) or World Small Animal Veterinary Association ( https://wsava.org ) websites for updates. The main thing to remember here is that there is currently NO evidence of canine or feline-to-human transmission, and the abandonment or euthanasia of household pets is completely unjustified.
03.01.2022 AUSTRALIA DAY LONG WEEKEND To our valued clients, The clinic will be open for emergencies and urgent appointments over the weekend as follows:... We will be resuming normal operating hours from 7:30 am on Tuesday 28th Jan. We wish you all a happy and safe long weekend!
02.01.2022 Those of you who visited the clinic last week may have noticed that we were allowing one client per pet into the clinic for consultations again. Sadly, with the spike in Covid cases seen in Victoria over the past week the CPH team have decided to revert back to a contactless-clinic and will again not be allowing clients inside the building until further notice. We realise this is frustrating but we appreciate your understanding while we strive to keep both you and our staff safe.

01.01.2022 Something big happened here at CPH this week. Our founding super-star Vet, Dr Peter Verhoef, officially hung up his stethoscope and has handed over the reins (and the clinic keys) to long-time Senior CPH Vet Dr Jess Gruchy (and husband Stuart). This change has been years in the making and finally took effect on Monday. We had a little celebration on Wednesday to farewell Pete and his wife Wendy and wish them all the best during their well-earned retirement! Thanks for 23 years of CPH excellence Pete, we hope we continue to do you proud!!
