09.01.2022 HIKING ESSENTIALS I thought some might be interested to know what I pack for a long day hike. As some as you know I mostly do long hikes alone as it’s too much ...for our 2 year old and my hubby graciously lets me indulge my passion. I keep my pack weight to 10% of my body weight, it is approx 6kg fully loaded. A little heavy but as I hike alone I have to carry everything myself. In my pack I carry: WATER: 2L of water in a bladder so I can sip as I walk. A LIFESTRAW should I ever run out of water this perfect, lightweight device means I can drink from any water source. FOOD: Lightweight foods such as bars, jerky, dried fruit and nuts and sugary lollies for an energy boost when needed. I always take more than I think I need in case I have an injury and am on the trail longer than expected. COMMUNICATION & NAVIGATION: I hike with a Satellite phone and my mobile phone which has a compass and GPS locator. I carry a topographic map if I don’t know the trail in a waterproof zip lock bag. EXTRA CLOTHES: Hiking is all about layers and in high altitudes like tassie I need to be prepared for all weather so I have packed my rain jacket, a set of thermals, socks, ear warmer and gloves. They are all lightweight and I carry them in a lightweight dry bag. I wear a merino buff and several layers. RAIN PONCHO My jacket is waterproof and I have a rain cover built into my daypack but the poncho gives me an extra layer of protection in heavy rain. SKIN PROTECTION Hat, sunglasses, lip balm, sunscreen and insect repellant. I love the Ouch brand. It’s tiny, lightweight, natural and it WORKS. FIRST AID / SURVIVAL I have a great little St Johns outdoor kit which contains snake bite bandages, basic first aid supplies, a space blanket, whistle, torch. I add panadol, antihistamines, hydralyte tablets, leatherman knife and a lighter. This pretty much has me covered in all circumstances and I feel comfortable hiking alone. If you are ever looking for a good guide the Ten Essentials developed in the 1930s by The Mountaineers is an excellent reference for what to carry on hikes: Ten Essential Systems Navigation: map, compass, altimeter, GPS device, personal locator beacon (PLB) or satellite messenger Headlamp: plus extra batteries Sun protection: sunglasses, sun-protective clothes and sunscreen First aid: including foot care and insect repellent (as needed) Knife: plus a gear repair kit Fire: matches, lighter, tinder and/or stove Shelter: carried at all times (can be a light emergency bivy) Extra food: Beyond the minimum expectation Extra water: Beyond the minimum expectation Extra clothes: Beyond the minimum expectation
