24.01.2022 Update on Proposed Development Application MCU19/0142 - Fast Food Drive through establishment - Macdonalds Restaurant. This was a Code Assessable DA that Council refused, based on RCC Officer Recommendation, regarding challenges faced by such a proposal on this site. This update is regarding an Appeal Process that was lodged at the Planning & Environment Court in June by the Applicant.... More information on the P&E Court Process can be found here: http://apps.courts.qld.gov.au/esearching/FileDetails.aspx

23.01.2022 COVID Update via RCCs CEO: As you may be aware, contract tracing is now under way following the latest outbreak of COVID-19 in south-east Queensland. A Redlands Coast location has been named by Queensland Health on a list of sites attended by a person who recently tested positive to COVID-19.... If you attended Birkdale 12RND Fitness, 3/190 Birkdale Road (in the group of shops next Birkdale Fair Shopping Centre) on the morning of Wednesday 19 August 2020 from 8am-9.30am, please monitor your health. If you have even the slightest of symptoms, self-isolate and get tested for COVID-19 immediately. Please be aware that the State Government has also announced new COVID-19 restrictions that affect Redland City. Under the changes, that are effective immediately, you may have a maximum of 10 visitors in your home, including the members of your household that live there In addition, public gatherings at places like our parks can only have a maximum of 10 people including yourself. This does not apply to businesses which are using a COVID-19 safe plan. There are also new restrictions around visiting residential aged care, disability accommodation facilities and hospitals. While this is not a time to panic, it is important that we continue to do everything we can to assist the tracing effort and limit the spread of COVID-19 within the community. To ensure residents and our families stay well, please continue to follow these guidelines: If you are sick in any way even with mild symptoms stay home and get tested. Wash your hands as often as you can for 20 seconds and dry with paper towel. Use hand sanitiser when you are not able to wash your hands. Maintain social distancing of 1.5m two big steps between you is a good guide. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, where the virus can enter your body. Do not shake hands, hug or kiss people you do not live with. Common symptoms of COVID-19 include a fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, fatigue, shortness of breath, loss of taste and loss of smell. Queensland Health advises people may also experience other symptoms such as nausea or vomiting, or loss of appetite. For an extensive list of locations, times and dates visited by a person who recently tested positive to COVID-19, please visit: https://www.qld.gov.au//cor/current-status/contact-tracing To find your nearest fever clinic, visit: https://www.qld.gov.au/covid19testing. 22.01.2022 Blokes (and Ladies) of Birkdale & Thorneside & beyond... This month you have a choice: Should my Mo ‘Stay’ or ‘Go’??... Donators get to decide. I’m hoping donors can post a message with your preference. Everyone supporter gets one vote... ‘The Mo must Go!’ {I’ll shave on December 1} Or ‘Grow the Mo!’ {Another Twisty Year} Most votes from donors wins. And there’s a twist: Total dollar value carries a 50% bonus to support ‘Go!’ or ‘Grow!’ Maximum bucks might tip the vote... Will this be a Smooth Christmas or a Curly one? You choose. Blokes benefit. Best wishes to all.

21.01.2022 Good morning gentle folk of the Birkdale/Thorneside/Redlands Village... Nice cool weather, as we start our three days lockdown in Redlands and the Greater Brisbane region. (Chief Health Officer suggests ‘no community transfer’ today which is great news.) A kind resident mindfully asked others on a community page: ... ‘What are you doing to make best use of this time?’ There have been many artful, practical and home based recreational responses. To help pass the time (and have a break from the digital world) here are a few suggestions in the form of ‘Parlour Games’ - which were common in a time before smart-phones, computers, televisions, radios or modern entertainment - when life was a little like our ‘lockdown’, but just called ‘normal’. Things have changed since then, but fun is still a thing we can choose to make a priority, if we consider it important. Perhaps some of these suggestions may be useful to people who want to try some old fashioned creative exercises. (Son #2 and I just played ‘The Minister’s Cat’, which was quite delightful. We have also decided that each of us will choose a recipe and cook a meal over the next few days.) Best wishes & other suggestions welcome:

21.01.2022 Birkdale COVID Update for Locals 12 RND Fitness - Birkdale patrons: Please be mindful that contact tracing has identified this location as a potential hotspot. Authorities suggest: No need for alarm, however, if any locals feel unwell, it is important to self-isolate and get tested - especially during this phase of hyper-alertness.... https://www.qld.gov.au//co/current-status/contact-tracing

18.01.2022 Ahoy, me Hearties!! What the bejabbers is happening with ye olde pirate shippe on the eastern flank of Beth Boyd Park? We all know (and love) the boat - so much so that I asked officers to do this consultation regarding park upgrades.... I know there are lots of questions being asked by residents. This video is my attempt to provide an update on the status of the boat - as considered from Redland City Council officers perspective. During the consultation phase (and always) I really need you to raise your voice and express your views about what matters to you about our unique area - by 31 August. 16.01.2022 Today, Councillors Wendy Boglary, Adelia Berridge, Tracey Huges and I joined Indigiscapes Officers in thanking some Bushcare Volunteers and conveyors for their tremendous support taking care of our naturally wonderful environmental areas across Redland City. Special thanks in Division 10 to members of our 4 dedicated groups: Birkdale Bush; Helen Street, Thorneside; ... Mary Street, Birkdale; & Penny Lane, Thorneside. Special recognition to Marie O’Connell who has been convenor of Helen Street for the past 7 years and has recently moved from Thorneside to Birkdale. Best wishes and thanks to all our volunteers in Redland City. It was great to see the Indigiscapes Team pay credit to a small number of those who really do help council and community to manage our bushland areas. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions other events to thank volunteers have been difficult to arrange. (Thanks to Wendy for these photos which were much better than mine with a wonky camera lens!)

15.01.2022 In light of recent news about RCC decisions regarding use of land, FYI:

15.01.2022 Sunday: Mindful reflective day... Lately, I have noticed peoples love and appreciation of place - locals sharing photos and stories about our area has been seemingly enhanced...... This article about how nature and the built environment affects us has some interesting insights... How do we make this essence apparent to the decision making structures of bureaucracy, where practical, technical, fiscal, logical, rational and impartial decisions are made - sometimes those decisions are not seemingly fully aware of the values that mean so much to individuals, collectives and communities within society... How can this be changed... ....within a democracy... ... ? For now: as you enjoy what you love about where we live, consider... -{ }- In nature, our sense of self becomes boundless, which is deeply restorative The border between self and place shifts based on sensory cues Our memory is a living repository of spatial maps Exposure to spatial polarity is restorative to cognitive function Multisensory Open Sky Compositions* engage spatial cognition Peripheral vision builds our emotional connection to place Visual stimulus also engages the spatial maps in the visual cortex

15.01.2022 Permaculture is about ethical living. More than being about sustainability, It’s a way to sense and see the world For people who respect natures limits & for those who value common sense.... Highly recommended for mindful folk (+ it’s in Redland City limits this year!!) 15.01.2022 Remembrance Day, Cleveland today: With State Members: Kim Richards MP, Don Brown MP, Mark Robinson MP, Councillors Wendy Boglary, Julie Talty, Lance Hewlett and many RSL representatives, War Widows, ex service personnel and emergency services reps. ‘At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them...’... Lest We Forget

14.01.2022 Yesterday, I was delighted to join Councillors accepting RCC officer recommendations - endorsing several new strategic planning documents relating to the Birkdale Community Land - (Love the new descriptor!) The reports (below) provide council with manageable ways to address matters of Indigenous Cultural Heritage; European Heritage; as well as mapping matters of Conservation and Environmental Significance (at the national level of assessment). Here is a link to the report...s: https://www.redland.qld.gov.au//2020_council_meeting_minut Today, I sent a copy of these reports via email (letter) to 102 year old Henry W. Flora in America. Henry served as a US Army Signalman, based in Hemmant, the sister site to Capalaba/Birkdale. Our property was Macarthurs Radio Receiving HQ during WWII. Some of Mr Floras photos and recollections have been important in assisting information that is captured within the Heritage Conservation Management Plan report. These reports now offer critical baseline data for how council, community and other interest holders can plan for the future of the land in coming years. I am assured there will be community consultation on these matters in coming months say officers. If you have recollections or ideas, please have Your Say on the Birkdale Community Lands here: https://yoursay.redland.qld.gov.au/BirkdaleLand

14.01.2022 Look around you... What do you see that was not (originally) created by an artist..? Apart from nature, absolutely everything (within the general economy) was once made possible via the simple and ancient process of artful design and creative innovation.... So, let us remember: The old ways remind us who we are, where we are from, how to design wisely & why the simple things matter. The island has many lessons for us to learn and its residents love to share. Anaheke is a great ambassador for creative processes that weave people and place together...

13.01.2022 Update on Proposed McDonalds Application MCU19/0142 Here is a link to the Judgement in the Birkdale McDonalds Case in the Planning & Environment Court that was delivered on Friday: https://www.sclqld.org.au/caselaw/QPEC/2020/59 (Fort Street Real Estate Capital Pty Ltd v Redland City Council)... Brief: Originally refused by council based on Officer Recommendation. Subsequently Appealed in the Planning & Environment Court and recently overturned by the Judge for development approval. Council Officers are reviewing the decision which allowed the appeal on the basis that the proposed development is appropriate and complies with each of the relevant planning scheme codes. While the court was not open for public hearing due to Covid restrictions, I am informed that there was considerable discussion during the course of the hearing about certain provisions in the planning scheme and provisions which require an active, safe, pedestrian focused street life and minimising non-active elements such as vehicle access along street frontages. It appears the court took a different position to council in regard to these provisions. Know that I will be working with councillors and officers to address future Redlands Planning Scheme amendments regarding provisions in our planning scheme, in order to overcome any ambiguity and to protect community interests where possible in future. I want to thank the many residents who made contact with me and who worked together to raise very important points, some of which our officers agreed were significant, however many were deemed to be outside the regulatory planning provisions, when assessed against the Redland City planning scheme as a Code Assessable development. (Note: Currently, The Redlands Planning Scheme stipulates the only trigger for ‘Impact Assessment’ in the District Centre Zone is in relation to ‘height’. This is a point of concern which I have been suggesting I s an inadequate measure to prevent local issues, such as the many site constraints, safety issues and traffic movement issues we face in Birkdale. These are some of the challenges that will need to be addressed in future proposed amendments to RPS.) I want to thank RCC officers for many hundreds of hours spent on this application and for keeping me updated about progress regarding their attempts to uphold this decision. I also want to acknowledge the diverse views expressed within the community regarding this matter and also the rights of the applicant which have ultimately been upheld. I look forward to working with all parties to assist with delivering an optimal outcome for our area. Thanks for your interest and engagement.

09.01.2022 Dear Fathers Enjoy this Day & those you love. Thanks for all you do to help community & family...... A Poem: If... by Rudyard Kipling: If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or, being lied about, dont deal in lies, Or, being hated, dont give way to hating, And yet dont look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dreamand not make dreams your master; If you can thinkand not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with triumph and disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth youve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to broken, And stoop and build em up with wornout tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: Hold on; If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kingsnor lose the common touch; If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you; If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds worth of distance run Yours is the Earth and everything thats in it, Andwhich is moreyoull be a Man, my son!

08.01.2022 6 years ago... An idea to take old unwanted ping-pong tables into the streets seemed both oddly appropriate and fun. Spring Pong was an attempt to build community that had a few little red hens offer support and bring their chicks, but ultimately was a lot of work, setting up 6 tables every week, playing vinyl records & inviting people to Mooroondu Sport & Recreation Club (thanks to MSRC for permissions back then). Now that COVID is here, some people may consider putting a le...ss-used table tennis court out the front of their house on sunny days & invite friends or neighbours to BYO bat/paddle (& ball). People can remain physically distant & have a bit of hit & giggle as a way to build community. Like everything, its up to you, your will and application of common-sense to set the tone so people use but do not abuse this kind of generosity. For consideration & reflection... Have a fab weekend & be mindful of the weather forecast.
