23.01.2022 Delivering for Murwillumbah: At Knox Park with Janelle Saffin - Member for Lismore & Councillor Reece Byrnes - Labor for Tweed Shire to inspect the next stage o...f upgrades completed under the Knox Park Master Plan. This $1.7 million project was funded through federal, state and local government funding. The upgrades carried out during this stage include: upgraded pathways to improve accessibility; new lighting to improve safety; new gardens and landscaping; naturally shaded outdoor dining areas; a new bus stop; a new outdoor stage area with power and a new park entry at Brisbane and Wollumbin Streets. This stage of the project has created a more welcoming entrance to the park, with improved lighting, upgrades to the bus shelter and seating and replacing the existing rotunda with a new outdoor stage area to better accommodate community events and festivals. When the Knox Park Master Plan is complete, it will transform Murwillumbah and become a community hub attracting tens of thousands of locals and tourists every year. This investment will help ensure regional communities like Murwillumbah remain a great place to live, work and raise a family.

22.01.2022 Council has voted unanimously to reopen beach carparks along the Tweed Coast. Work to remove barriers will begin tomorrow. The only exception is the road closur...e on Letitia Rd at Fingal Head which will remain in place until 30 June. Wed like to thank all Tweed residents for their cooperation and patience while the closures were in place. If you're visiting the beach for exercise please continue to follow the current physical distancing and social gathering restrictions. The decision to close beach carparks was to support the national effort in combating the spread of COVID-19. 21.01.2022 ***TRI-PARTY BORDER MOTION SUPPORTED UNANIMOUSLY*** Working with Greens Mayor Katie Milne and Liberal @councillorjamesowen tonight we succesfully moved the following: Mayoral Minute:... In light of advice that the Qld border may be closed until Christmas due to COVID -19 and the significant negative health, social and economic impacts this is currently having, that the Mayor write to the NSW Premier and the Queensland Premier to request consideration of options as outlined below: 1. Queensland considers amending the current style of restrictions to revert to the restrictions that were originally in place from March to July. 2. The current NSW & Queensland border bubble be extended to the southern border of Ballina Shire, NSW to encompass this critical economic zone. 3. The current NSW & Queensland border bubble be extended to north of Brisbane, Qld. 4. That critical workers from Qld outside the bubble areas be allowed into the NSW bubble areas, in-line with the current allowance for critical workers from NSW being allowed to service Qld. 5. That the NSW Premier imposes intrastate travel restrictions to the border bubble areas, or at least from any NSW COVID-19 hotspot clusters, to protect rural and regional areas such as the Tweed Shire, maintain the integrity of the border bubble and give confidence to Qld. 6. NSW commits resources to operate a Northern Rivers bubble checkpoint. 7. Consideration be given to providing increased specialist medical services to be provided in the area for northern NSW residents no longer able to be cared for in Qld. 8. NSW assists residents with financial support to quarantine in Queensland if required for essential medical, work or other purposes. 9. Further financial support is provided for NSW residents and businesses negatively impacted by the border closures. 10. Qld provides greater flexibility for compassionate grounds for NSW residents to be with their families in Qld. 11. Thanks the respective Premiers for their assistance so far.

16.01.2022 Nearly 12 months on, the Bilambil Heights bus stop case remains a mystery. It continues to serve locals in a sturdy fashion. Post Covid we should expect to see the results of my bus stop audit approved by Tweed Council in 2019. #onthebuses #bilambil #tweedshirecouncil

16.01.2022 GEOFF PROVEST FAILS THE TWEED ON SHARK MITIGATION Tweed Labor Councillor Reece Byrnes today condemned Tweed Nationals MP Geoff Provest and his Liberal-National Government for failing to provide shark mitigation measures for the Tweed Shire. The New South Wales Government has just announced an $8 million shark mitigation strategy following a four-year trial. After four long years all Tweed Shire has received is ONLY two drones and a shark listening station but no SMART druml...ines for our beaches. I recently called for Tweed Shire Council to invest in six drones because Geoff Provest and his Government have failed to act and failed to protect our beachgoers. We have four outstanding Surf Life Saving Clubs within the Tweed Shire. These are: Fingal, Salt, Cabarita Beach and the Cudgen Surf Life Saving Club. These four Clubs desperately need effective shark mitigation/detection and other general beach and surf safety measures. My questions for Geoff Provest are: Why did Tweed Shire only receive two drones in the recent state shark mitigation strategy? Which Surf Clubs within the Tweed Shire will the drones be used at and which Clubs miss out? Why didnt the Tweed Shire get SMART drumlines for our beaches? Locals are angry that weve been totally forgotten in this new state-wide plan. We see major shark mitigation measures down NSW Coast (see attached NSW Shark Program 2020/21) yet Tweed Shire has been neglected leaving us all vulnerable. When it comes to our safety in the water, the time for talk is over. The trial has finished, and we need action now. Im calling on Geoff Provest to do his job and immediately deliver six drones and SMART drumlines for all our beaches in the Tweed Shire, Reece said.

15.01.2022 What can Council do to help the Tweed recover and build a strong future for us all? Comment with your thoughts. #tweedshirecouncil #recover #covid19

15.01.2022 ***MEDIA RELEASE*** Tweed Deputy Mayor Reece Byrnes condemns the NSW Berejiklian/Barilaro Liberal-National Government’s decision to close all four schools in Murwillumbah. Tweed Deputy Mayor Reece Byrnes today submitted a motion to Tweed Shire Council condemning the NSW Berejiklian/Barilaro Liberal-National Government’s decision to close all four schools in Murwillumbah.... I’m calling on my fellow Tweed Councillors to strongly support this motion. This decision by a broken and scandal-ridden NSWLiberal-National Government is devastating for students, parents, and teachers in our community. This closure will spell certain doom for children’s education in our shire, and will likely mean job losses for our hard working teachers, Cr Reece Byrnes said. The motion condemns the NSW Berejiklian/Barilaro Liberal-National Government’s decision to close all four schools in Murwillumbah and force them into one location. The motion also calls on the NSW Berejiklian/Barilaro Liberal-National Government to reverse this disastrous closure. I want Council to write to the Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Deputy Premier John Barilaro and National Party Tweed MP Geoff Provest condemning their decision. Any Councillor that does not support this motion will need to explain to the parents, students and teachers why they support these Liberal-National cuts and closures, Cr Reece Byrnes said. Tweed Deputy Mayor’s motion: 1. Tweed Shire Council condemns in the strongest terms the decision by the Berejiklian/Barilaro Liberal National NSW Government to close all four schools in Murwillumbah and force them into one location. 2. Calls on the Berejiklian/Barilaro Liberal National NSW Government to immediately reverse this decision. 3. Tweed Shire Council writes to Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Deputy Premier John Barilaro and Tweed Nationals MP Geoff Provest expressing condemnation for their decision to close all four schools in Murwillumbah and force them into one location.

11.01.2022 Updates to follow.

09.01.2022 After a four-year shark trial Tweed Shire gets ONLY two drones and a shark listening station for our whole coastline and no SMART drumlines for our beaches. THIS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

08.01.2022 Lest we forget.

08.01.2022 LETS BUY THE DRONES! Tweed Labor Councillor Reece Byrnes today submitted a motion calling for Tweed Shire Council to purchase six drones for the purpose of conducting a shark mitigation and detection trial along our coastline. The recent tragic shark attack off the beach at Salt highlights the urgency for the purchase of these drones, Cr Byrnes said. ... The motion, which is for the August 2020 meeting of Council, will allow Council to purchase six drones on behalf our local surf lifesaving clubs. In partnership with Surf Life Saving NSW, Council will be able to give these clubs the technology they need to improve our safety in the water. When it comes to our safety in the water, the time for talk is over. These clubs need drone technology to keep us safe. Partnership with Surf Life Saving NSW and the Tweed Shire Council on a shark mitigation trial is urgently required. Cr Byrnes said. Copy of motion below: 1. Tweed Shire Council purchases six drones for the purpose of shark mitigation and detection on the Tweed Coast, and; 2. Council freely loans these drones to Surf Life Saving Clubs within the Tweed Shire including Fingal, Salt, Cabarita Beach and Cudgen Surf Life Saving Clubs for their use in shark mitigation/detection and other general beach and surf safety measures. 3. Council write to Surf Life Saving NSW seeking to enter into partnership with Council for a 12-month trial of these six drones across our coastal zone. Council further requests permission in this letter to allow for the clubs to operate said technology. 4. Tweed Shire Council revives the Tweed Beach Safety Liaison Committee.

04.01.2022 ***Casuarina Residents*** - Casuarina Town Centre - What is your feedback? At tomorrows Council meeting, Councillors are being asked to consider the following. Let me know your thoughts in the comments. ... RECOMMENDATION: That Council: 1. Continues to pursue the provision of a public toilet in the Icon building. 2. Allocates $20,000 in the 2021/2022 budget for the installation of a beach shower at access 6 (noting there is a shower facility approximately 55 metres away at the end of the Grand Parade.) 3. Not pursue the viewing platform and access as it is within the immediate coastal hazard zone. 4. Notes the cost estimates for the facilities and consider funding in future budgets and as relevant funding opportunities are presented

03.01.2022 Tweed councillors to vote on my motion to stop the Murwillumbah School Closures on Thursday night from 5.30 pm. You can watch live on primetime.bluejeans.com/a2m/live-event/buxhbepx At Thursday night’s Tweed Council meeting I will be asking my fellow Councillors to support a motion to stop the closure of four Murwillumbah State Schools and stand with our community, our students, parents and teachers.... Our community has been devastated by the NSW Government’s cruel decision to close these four schools. Together, we can fight this and Tweed Councillors must stand with our community. But I need your help. I need you to call or email the following councillors and ask them how they will vote: will they vote yes and stand with us or will they vote no and support these unfair school closures. Councillor Chris Cherry (Mayor) m: 0437 400 174 e: [email protected] Councillor Pryce Allsop m: 0400 122 016 e: [email protected] Councillor Ron Cooper m: 0419 716 906 e: [email protected] Councillor Katie Milne t: (07) 5590 9622 e: [email protected] Councillor James Owen m: 0415 561 701 e: [email protected] Councillor Warren Polglase m: 0428 961 306 e: [email protected]

03.01.2022 COMMUNITY VICTORY MORE DRONES FOR LOCAL SURF CLUBS Tweed Shire Labor Councillor Reece Byrnes moved a successful motion to secure two drones/UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) for local Tweed Shire Surf Clubs at the recent Council meeting (20 August 2020). Councillor Byrnes moved the motion in the wake of a recent fatal shark attack off the Kingscliff coastline, where it was apparent our beaches and the public needed more protection on the water.... Our community desperately needs these safety measures in place and the NSW Liberal-National Government State Government have failed to provide the resources to protect us on the beach, Cr Byrnes said. Council working with our local Surf Clubs and their members Council has committed to providing financial assistance to Clubs to purchase the drones. This a real community victory for our Surf clubs, local residents and beach safety, Cr Byrnes said. The motion now passed means Tweed Shire Council will provide $20 000 for the purchase of UAV/Drones to local clubs not covered by the recent State Government announcement. Now the clubs who were ignored by the Berejiklian Liberal-Nationals Government will have the resources they need to purchase drones/UAVS and keep us safe on the beach, Cr Byrnes said. The motion further resolved to allocate money equally to all local clubs to run local recruitment drives, buy extra equipment and provide overall greater safety for the community on our beaches.

03.01.2022 Send in the drones. Thanks to the @tweeddailynews for covering this important issue on the need for our local Surf Clubs to have drones. This weekend marks the final 'print' edition of the TDN as it moves to a fully digital platform.
