22.01.2022 Retro Bingo at the Morley Windmills Soccer Club & Morley Windmills Sports Club last Friday night, organised by The Morley Momentum, was an absolute hoot ! As many of you know, I have been involved with The Morley Momentum in various roles since its inception a couple of years ago and I was thrilled that the group decided to go ahead with the suggestion for this event. With music video clips from the last 40 years and people dressed in their best retro outfits, Jon Lennon (y...ep!) lead everyone through a night of bingo, music, dancing, games and all-round fun! This event was made possible by amazing volunteers, generous donations made by individuals, local businesses and community leaders, and a grant provided by the City of Bayswater. 21.01.2022 On Tuesday, Council approved the publication of the proposed Activities in Thoroughfares and Public Places and Trading Local Law 2020 in the government gazette. The local laws were amended by myself and Cr Dan Bull - Mayor, City of Bayswater, the public were provided opportunity to comment, and finally the laws were checked by the relevant State department. Abandoned shopping trolleys around our area, and from what I see being mainly within certain distances from shopping ar...eas, really are a blight on the visual appeal of the area. By taking a trolley and not returning it, leaving it on a thoroughfare near a shopping centre, abandoning it on footpaths, verges, in parks, dumped in water reserves, etc. is littering. It destroys the environment, it looks bad, is essentially stealing someone else’s property, and does nothing to help lift our area up. Please, return the trolley you use to where it comes from. Don’t leave it laying around the streets. I focussed on how our local laws deal with abandoned trolleys. I was able to get a change on the amount of time businesses have to collect an abandoned trolley, down from the recommended 5 days to 48 hours. The fines now imposed for businesses whose shopping trolleys are abandoned, and they fail to collect them upon being notified, has gone from $100 to $450. I hope that this increase will make major supermarkets think about how it actually might be better for them to send someone out into the streets at the end of each day to do a quick pickup of their trolleys from knows hotspots. I remember back in the 90’s when I worked at Woolworths in the Galleria, we used to have exactly this type of service. Time to bring it back? It is time for the main players like Woolworths, Coles, Target Australia, Kmart Australia, ALDI Australia and Spudshed to look at how they manage their trolleys, not only at the supermarket sites, but around our suburbs. 14.01.2022 The Department of Transport (DoT) has been creating a plan for a Long Term Cycling Network across multiple local government areas. Just last week Councillors were presented with this plan from the DoT. Looking at the draft plan, I saw that no provision was given to a cycle network connecting the new Morley Train Station to the heart of Morley along Walter Road. This is critical. If Morley is to reap benefits from the train station now being kilometres away in the middle of To...nkin Hwy, we need as many modes of transport and connection opportunities back to the Morley Activity Centre as possible. Having a designated cycle route as part of the plan from Russell Street all the way through to the new Morley station along Walter Road is so strategically important. Having this included should also allow us to source future grant funding opportunities for the cycling components of the Morley Streetscape Plan along Walter Road, which there is currently no funding for. Here I saw an opportunity, so I made my comment. I am glad that the Motion presented for Council consideration on this item on Tuesday night was amended to include in the first limb an additional route as a Secondary Route (blue) along Walter Road from Russell Street to be included all the way through to Broun Avenue and the new Morley Train Station. Other Councillors input was also included. Regarding the 2nd limb, I voted against this. The wording used, which was suggested by the Department of Transport, in my opinion committed no agency or authority to actually achieving anything in the plan within a given timeframe and did not make any commitments to funding being available from anyone. 13.01.2022 I am really happy to see $20,000 out of $1.306m from Federal Government Grant money that we have received to go towards "Connecting Noranda". Last year I suggested, and created a submission, for the Noranda Vibes town team to create a colourful and interesting pedestrian "path" which would connect the netball courts through to the Noranda Nook, recreation centre and shopping centre (see proposed design in the picture attached). I suggested a 2-staged approach because of the a...nticipated amount of work that would have to go into such a project and I was concerned that funding being offered through the Place Making grants programs would not be enough to do the whole project. The project was not approved at the time, however it was recognised by the City that walkability and legibility through this part of the Noranda town centre needed some attention..... ...... and BOOM! Mid-Year Budget Review! Attention received! 10.01.2022 Yesterday, I went for a walk to get an on-the-ground understanding of the site that is included in a Motion which will be considered at the next Council meeting that asks for a feasibility study be conducted that would look at the pro's, con's, etc. of creating a road that connects Swan Bank Road with Clarkson Road, Maylands. Starting at the Brickworks site, I strolled along the bike/foot path that connects Swan Bank Road with Clarkson Road and snuck up the path that goes to... Kittyhawk View. Wandering through Hinkler Loop, I ended up on a footpath that goes around Lake Brearley and popped out at Tourer Court where I headed over to the river foreshore and then back up Clarkson along the bike/footpath back to the Brickworks and Golf Course carpark. The walk was useful. It helped me gain perspective and understanding for the comments and opinions I have heard regarding this proposal. 02.01.2022 Recently the Morley Windmills Sports Club finished the renovation of the club kitchen. The kitchen was desperate for some attention, and now that it has got the love it deserved the club is ready to host all sorts of functions! If you would like to book the space, let me know and I can hook you up with the right people. Through the Stronger Communities Grant Program, with the support of Federal Member for Perth, Patrick Gorman MP, I was able to apply for a grant which would cover around 9% of the project cost. At peak times, and from my experience in the afternoons, this intersection has the potential to be a real disaster.... especially if you are turning right off Bath Road onto Morley Drive heading east. Perhaps a roundabout is needed here? An application for funding to do something here has been submitted by the City of Bayswater, however..., every bit of support from the community will help in getting some action in this area. We need Main Roads Western Australia to take note! PS: In my opinion, Bath Road should be 50km/hr, not 60!
