20.01.2022 DAY #7: THE NIGHT PARROT Meet Australia's rarest bird! Little has been known about the mysterious Night Parrot until recently, with sighting of the birds being far and few between. In fact, people thought that the Night Parrot was extinct for almost 100 years before its rediscovery in 1979! We assume that these birds are in continuous decline, with a total population somewhere between 5 and 249. Below is the most recent sighting by the Bush Heritage, who have established a ...56,000-hectare property in western Queensland to protect the parrot. 14.01.2022 DAY #3: THE MANDARINFISH You can arguably say that the Mandarinfish is the most beautiful creature in the ocean. But its bright aposematic colouring is in fact a sign of something far more dangerous. The Mandarinfish actually has no scales and instead uses tiny spines across their body to inject a toxic mucus into their predators! But if the idea of being poisoned isn't enough to keep you away: this mucus is also reported to be extremely foul smelling. Eh! Fun fact: The Mandarinfish is one of only two confirmed species in the world to produce its own blue-colouring. Isn't that extraordinary! #GetexploringQUTopia #7AnimalsStall7

However, with continuous land clearing, the Brigalow form of the Woma Python has come seriously under threat! This striking creature has become victim to the to the deadly Chytrid Fungus - a disease that is affecting frog populations everywhere. Now, with fewer than 200 individuals living in the wild, it has never been more important to help this species. Did you know: The Corroboree Frog is the world's first ever vertebrate di...scovered that can produce its own poisonous alkaloids. This is produced in their skin as is called pseudophrynamine. 03.01.2022 DAY #6: THE SPOTTED HANDFISH The Spotted Handfish is nothing short of wonderful! This benthic fish actually prefers to use its hand-like fins (hence the name) to WALK on the sea floor rather than swim. But the Spotted Handfish is even more unusal when you consider its location: it can only be found at the bottom of the Derwent River near Hobart and NOWHERE else in the world. This has become a concern for the species, who have become critically endangered due to the introduct...ion of invasive Northern Pacific Starfish that prey on their eggs! 01.01.2022 DAY #1: THE RED LIONFISH When you put the words "deadly" and "beautiful" together you get the Red Lionfish! This gorgeous coral reef inhabitant is known for its VENOMOUS red and white stripes that protrude from its body like a mane (get it? LIONfish! ). They use these to protect themselves from predators, which is defiantly helpful since they are extremely slow moving and conspicuous. Did you know that the Red Lionfish is an AMBUSH PREDATOR? This means that they wait compl...etely still until a smaller fish ventures too close... then they lunge aggressively at them! Wouldn't that be scary! #GetexploringQUTopia #7AnimalsStall7
