01.01.2022 Here at Cruise Adviser, we understand that advertising creatives often occupy a parallel universe. So when P&O launched its "earthlings" campaign featuring aliens and a slogan "Like no place on earth", we shrugged. But phase two of the advertising - a series of three films starring Hollywood comedian Owen Wilson and shot in La La land - has us really puzzled. We get that P&O's new target audience is 30+ females called Kylie from Kellyville (amazing - but true!). And we und...erstand that Owen is something of a cult figure among women of this age. What we find somewhat perplexing is that very little in the films seem to be about P&O ships. Unless the Pantry is now serving magic mushrooms. The new campaign is called The Conspicuous Awakening of Owen Wilson. But in truth, Owen hardly wakes up at all. The videos do feature mock ups of the new attractions, bars and restaurants onboard the Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden, which will be launched on November 25. But they mostly occur during dream sequences when Owen seems to have sipped on a few Magaritas too many. Apparently the ads pay homage to the cult film, The Life Aquatic of Steve Zissou. The first opens with Owen in the Blue Room, one of the new features on Aria and Eden. He is laying in a beautiful blondes lap. He is disoriented and questioning whether he is dead. He is then handed one of P&Os phenomenal cocktails though he hardly looks as if he needs one. The second video shows Owen in a bright yellow wetsuit laying on the stomach of Australian actress Kendal Rae, who helps him unzip his banana coloured swimmers before they lounge in the pool. As the story unfolds, Owen begins to piece together his experience onboard. Finally, the third clip features the ships Dragon Lady Chinese restaurant as well as The Oasis the new adult only area of the ship. Again Owen seems to have had more than a dumpling or two. P&O Cruises Head of Marketing and Distribution, Simon Cheng told the MailOnline, Were thrilled that Owen was able to channel his inner cruiseling and showcase some of the remarkable features these ships have to offer. Hollywood, like Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden, exudes style and sophistication so it was to Hollywood we looked to help launch these ships. OK, Owen is a great character and can be very funny. And we know the team at P&O want to be different. But we do wonder what the Kerrigans of Castle fame would make of it all. We do think the line has a great, new, sophisticated product, with good food offerings, lounges, pools and bars. Perhaps the Hollywood version is just a tad over the top? We turn to Australias own Owen - Darryl Kerrigan to put it in a nutshell: Tell em theyre dreamin. https://youtu.be/YOjK7owS1a4 See more
