25.01.2022 Friday Tips!!! We will post a series of tips every Friday to assist in making your trips more enjoyable. TIP #1: Develop a list of things to check before you head off every day. There are many lists you can get off forums and they are a good start but you need to tailor the list to suit your van and vehicle.... A good policy is to have someone check the external and someone check the internal, then swap and do it again. This may seem overkill but it is often the silly things we miss and they cost us money and ruin our holiday. It only takes 5 minutes and will make your journey safer and more relaxed. On the list you will need: Check the stabiliser legs are secured in the up position Ensure the gas is turned off Check tyre pressures Check the wheel nuts Ensure the coupling is secured properly Check the jockey is wheel off Ensure all lights and brake control are working Ensure hatches and doors internal and external are locked securely Ensure windows and fridges are locked Happy Travels! *These are just a few things that may be considered as a guide. #caravanningtips #caravanning #caravanningaustralia

19.01.2022 Friday Tips! SETTING UP YOUR CAMPSITE There are a few factors to consider when setting up your campsite. If you're staying in a caravan park and you have an allocated site, not only will you have no choice, but chances are you will be on a fairly levelled site that won't have any unseen dangers. If on the other hand, you are free-camping, choosing your site needs a little more thought... ... If you park your caravan under a tree you may have shade in the heat of the day but you also run the risk of branches falling on your van. It doesn't need to be windy for a branch to fall, often they will fall in the calm after a storm. If you are needing on roof solar to charge your house batteries, obviously you can't park your van in the shade, this is crucial if you have a 12-volt compressor fridge. Another danger is setting up to close to water . Tides come in-and-out and rivers can rise overnight even if it hasn't been raining close to your site. Picking a spot that is levelled across the site will make setup much easier. It is very easy to level the caravan front to back using the jockey wheel, but not nearly as easy to level the van side to side. If a levelled site isn't available, you need to reverse up onto caravan levellers to level the van side to side. You must never use your stabilising legs to level your caravan. They are for stabilising only! The wheels must be used to support the weight of the caravan, not the chassis. If you use a stabilising leg to level the caravan not only will the gearing in the leg disintegrate (which would probably not be covered under warranty) you run the risk of slightly bowing your chassis and moving cladding, potentially creating a leak in your caravan. #crusadercaravans #caravanningtips #caravanning . . . . . . . . . *These are generic recommendations only. 12.01.2022 Friday Tips!!! Tyre pressures on both your caravan and your tow vehicle are extremely important. The required pressures will change depending on road conditions, travel speed and amount of luggage. Get yourself a good quality tyre pressure gauge and make sure you carry a good pump. If you are buying a 12 volt compressor pump, buy a good 4X4 pump, a cheap one designed to pump up a car tyre may not be capable of reaching the sorts of pressures required for caravanning. Che...ck tyre pressures first thing in the morning before it gets hot, then tow your van for 40 - 60minutes at highway speeds and re-check the pressures in each tyre. If you’ve got a 5-6 psi rise in pressures (for LT tyres), your cold inflation pressure was correct. If you have less than this, then the cold pressures are too high, drop 2-3 psi. If you see an increase of more than 6 psi, the cold pressures have been set too low, add 2-3 psi. This will give you the safest handling and best tyre wear. If you are travelling on rough roads especially heavily corrugated roads you will need to lower your speed to 60 - 70 kph and lower your tyre pressures by around 20%. The extra flex in the tyre wall at these lower pressures adds an extra layer of cushioning to protect your van from shaking to pieces. It is critical when you are back on better roads and your speed increases to reinflate your tyres, to the correct hot pressure. Rear tyre pressures on your tow rig generally would be 10 psi more than you would have when not towing. As with you caravan on corrugated roads and lower speeds you need to drop your vehicle tyre pressures around 20%. *These are just a few things that may be considered as a guide. #caravanningtips #caravanning #caravanningaustralia
