25.01.2022 Hi members One of our members and his three boys was involved in a serious car accident yesterday. Mark and his 3 boys are all in hospital and are all very lucky to be alive. ... They will require the club support. I will keep you all updated with there progress and what we will do to support the family. Update Mark is stuggling, may have 3 fractures in his spine. Still not sure if they will operate.. Little one with broken arm in 3 places yet to be operated, the other 2 boys still tested I will be setting up a go fund me page for the family. There is an add on to this story. Mark was in a bad truck accident a while back and has had shit loads of operations and has never fully recovered. He had a successful business when he was younger and after the accident lost everything. For those who know Mark he is a fighter and never talks negative and has a can do attitude. Mark’s family is his life, and he as well as the rest of the family will need all the support we can provide.

03.01.2022 7 years ado today, while doing the gardening, my mother had driven to the local Masters. Turning left at a round about she actually seen me driving down racecou...rse road. Upon parking, a call coming from me, well at least it was my phone number calling, only it was a complete stranger on the end of the line, a stranger who timidly told her ‘ oh hello, I’m hoping you are Kates mum, a young girl in a white car that has crashed into a power pole on racecourse road, next to the school playground. We’ve called 000’ My mother was feeling slightly confused as she had just seen me on my way home, none the less, she made her way back to the scene of the reported accident. My father & sister who were eagerly awaiting me to return to the family home with the kabana & cheese I had driven to the local woolies to get knew nothing about what was going on. Its a traditional Melbourne cup day afternoon, of course we needed a picnic to enjoy the festivities. My sister started to receive messages from friends who had witnessed the accident. ‘ Kates had an accident. ‘ At first they thought it can’t be that bad as I was on the road around the corner, little did they know what they were about to witness. I was still in the car , but I was crying, whining this horrible cry. I was thrashing my arms around violently & completely melting down. My sister got in the car beside me trying her hardest to calm me down to no avail. I looked drunk. Unresponsive to anyone around me but whining. The paramedics called for the mica team. Initially it was thought that I had had a stroke. Upon assessment, it was determined I had a major head trauma. A helicopter was going to airlift me to the Alfred however upon further discussion, It was deemed unsafe for my head to be in a helicopter due to the cabin pressure. I was taken to Frankston hospital where a super doctor,’ yes that’s right a ‘super doctor’ who arrived on a motorbike, would take over my care, putting me into an induced coma so I could be transferred to the Fred. My family would go from scared to being petrified especially after being taken into the family room at the hospital. A doctor told them that they were I going to be putting me into an induced coma for my own safety & to stabilise me so I could be taken to the Alfred. The Coma was supposed to last for 2 days, it lasted for 12! I just wouldn’t wake up, I would not respond when promoted My parents & Sister held a bedside vigil. ‘ Kates not going to good. If she was to wake up, IF she does, there is definitely going to be long term damage. ‘ My family did not choose to turn off the machines, instead they knew that I was stubborn . And on day 12 my sister was in the room with my mum & dad & Ben too. She sat next to me ‘ she’s holding your hand’ Mum told me Bec was there, as she held my hand,I opened 1 eye for a few seconds & closed it again. I wasn’t going anywhere’!!! During my coma, my loved ones would pull my hair, tell me they were going to burn all my shoes, & talk to me, begging me to move or open my eyes . My sister played the Amity affliction to me over& over & over again When I awoke, I had the mentality of a five-year-old. I could not walk, I could not talk, I had to wear nappies. I couldn’t feed myself. The nurses at the Alfred (when their shift had concluded ) would come visit me. At this stage I could not remember anyone’s name. The hallucinations were horrible. I had a syndrome called PRES, Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome. Basically the left-hand side of my brain was damaged. I was legally blind, I have permanent dexterity issues so I cannot feel my hands or feet any more, I can’t tie my own shoes, or write properly. My brain damage is mostly cognitive, so it effects my motor skills. I also have PTSD , depression & anxiety all caused by the accident. I feel stupid because I know how to do something, I’ve done it a million times but the brain just doesn’t get the message anymore. I use to be so smart , confident & a hard worker. Not being able to do such every day tasks like writing your name, or reading the clock gives me that sense of stupidity. I hide it pretty well, but those around me know I forget everything,get confused a lot , I repeat myself, tell the same story over & over, & have mild spaz attacks due to the steroids. I attempted to take my life on 3 separate occasions before I was diagnosed with mental health issues. I was embarrassed to tell anybody what was going on because I thought they already pitied me for being in a wheelchair & wearing nappies. Eventually, I sought help in rehab & it’s been mostly smooth sailing mental wise since that day. I learnt that you are not a burden, that you are not annoying anyone, but you need to ask for help. Becoming a Zaidees ambassador quite literally gave me a purpose, my awareness page Donate for Kate , gave me a purpose! I love doing all the charity work, I love raising awareness & changing peoples minds. Although I miss a lot about my life pre-accident, I’m incredibly grateful to those who have helped me get to where I am today. As we speak, I’m about to do a zoom conference to discuss organ donation through Donor Mate. Thank you to all my friends, family, complete strangers who have shown their support to me. It’s definitely been a beacon of light during very troubled, dark times I’ve gone through. Love to you all Thankyou to my donor angel, whoever you are
