25.01.2022 Horses in training at Crystal Pines now have the option to include PEMF sessions in their Training program! This can be included weekly while in training or if we feel we have found a tight spot and a horse is becoming muscle sore while in training we can always start a program with the PEMF for a couple of weeks to help them along. The general well-being of our horses in training is always a priority, and our PEMF Pulse machine has certainly made a difference in our program for younger and older horses!

24.01.2022 Yet again we are at this stage. If your in a stage 3 area and would like a lesson at your place please dont hesitate to ask, Im willing to Travel to help you to keep progressing with your horse in these trying times.

20.01.2022 Become A Better Observer... These images show a variety of "natural" positions for a horse to take, with no human involvement. Study them, itll help inform you... in conversations surrounding a horses movements. Lesson/Talking Points on this topic if youre interested: I got my trigger tripped the other day when a guy said the way I was riding my horse in an Image, was "Not Natural".... So, I decided to create an educational piece surrounding the topic to the best of my ability. In these often times heated discussions, what I think happens is, #1 people are simply uneducated and sometimes dont care to be, and/or #2 people get their riding discipline or sport PREFERENCE, mixed up with a version of right and wrong, and fly it under a flag of "natural" or "unnatural" to justify that preference. What also happens is a negative ASSUMPTION right off the bat that the horse is being abused, if it is not physically in a persons "personal preference position." Theres a lot of mudslinging that happens around images of collection and certain maneuvers, and it usually starts with a horse in a flexed position, or a lower head position, or a horse loading its haunches. So Ive compiled a collection of photographs that have no human involved to illustrate how natural all these positions are to a horse. Not only are they natural, they use them when the are displaying; PLAY, FIGHT, and DOMINANCE... Because that is when they need to hold and use themselves powerfully. Stallions spend how ever long it takes, at a walk, trot, canter and sometimes gallop, with their head down on the ground to gather and dominate a herd of mares and foals. Its called "snaking" their head...look the term up. All horses of all ages arch their neck, tuck their nose and sit on their haunches when they are playing, play-fighting, or fighting. If a horse WANTS to stop hard and fast, they sit on their hocks and slide, some lower their neck to do this, and some raise it, depending on the situation and individual. If/when there is an issue with these positions when people are involved in teaching the horse to use these positions with us, or for us, its in the excess; excessive force to get there or excessive time in the position. The problem with excess is its measured differently from individual to individual, and its DEFINITELY not measurable from an image/photograph. And unfortunately, no matter how "ugly" it is, its still only a moment in time, and the context is unknown. Horses can look "ugly" with no human involvement as well, Ive included a few images that I believe show this. Ive heard all the arguments, so let me cut the main one off at the pass; "ok fine, those are natural positions, but they only do this for a short period of time in nature..." And then my reply is always, "but this MUST beg the question why" ... Horses HAVE to be energy conservationists in nature, if they dont use as little energy as possible in the wild, they will perish. Domesticated horses have this natural tendency as well, but they are fed really really well in most cases, and many times these days theyre OVER fed, and UNDER exercised. They NEED to burn off that extra energy, they NEED to be physically challenged at THEIR level of fitness, or you are risking developing mental, physical, metabolic issues. We big brained humans lean over and risk wrecking our backs, lifting heavy loads, rather than doing what weve been told constantly, which is to do it more anatomically correct and squat down and use our more powerful legs and buttocks. Leaning over is more natural, its easy, burns less calories, but its not anatomically correct. Summing it up: Whats natural and whats not?...anything a horse can do is natural. And personal preference does not equate right and wrong. Continuously educate yourself, train with good ethics, take care of the horse mentally and physically as an individual, and youll be well on your way to doing a good or even Great job by your horse! -Kalley ** These images were found all over the internet, all credits to these beautiful horses, owners if they have them, and photographers of these gorgeous images

20.01.2022 Horsemanship tip of the day: Before you step into the saddle, check is your horse going to think or just react! A horse that just reacts may spook and run off and do what ever to get away from that scary object. but if your horse is thinking it may spook and come straight back to you for guidance and leadership. You cant always stop a horse from spooking but you can help the out come of the spook by preparing this from the ground and in the saddle. This is just one of the things Crystal Pines Performance Horses can help with, lessons available this week!

20.01.2022 Meet the Pro - Chelsea Ragg Alexandra, NE Victoria Crystal Pines Performance Horses An accomplished reiner, Chelseas main business focus is to train, show a...nd sell quality horses. Her clients horses are trained to the best of their ability to meet their owners goals whether it be trail riding, dressage, ranch, or Chelseas specialty, Reining. Along with training, Chelsea also offers lessons and clinics to all levels of riders and horses preparing them for the show pen or helping to reach their own personal goals. Crystal Pines training facilities are conveniently located in Alexandra in North East Victoria. Why do you love Reining? I love that reining has so many styles of showing, you can be up in the saddle over your horse or sitting back and letting your horses run in front. Theres no wrong way to show so long as your horse is willing. I also love how a good solid reining training program sets your horse up for life and they revert back to the great foundation not matter who is in the saddle. Favourite Manuever? I think I have a good solid program for Lead Changes and it is so rewarding when horses learn them. In the show pen they can make or break your circles and pretty Lead Changes can be the icing on the cake in your circles especially in a pattern with a figure of 8. Current Horses? I have two 2yos that are great futurity prospects, I also have a 3yo Einsteins Revelation mare who I hope to show next year. Currently I have been showing a mare by Smart Lil Remi Chic out of Wimpys Lil Starlight. What do you bring to RTA Clinics? I will bring the best knowledge I have learnt from my superiors and mentors and what has worked best for my horses. Giving back to the sport... I have sponsored GVRHA for a Number of years and I have volunteered as a trainer for the RA youth Clinic a couple of times too. I have also been on the GVRHA committee for a number of years also. Outside of Reining? None horse related but I love to head up the bush and explore a little, I would like to find time to do this more. Pre covid I also had a 2nd job at a School Camp running outdoor harness activities. 14.01.2022 Stacey Westfall has written this article so well! I often come across horses who dont accept or havent been taught collection, it can put rides at risk when they suddenly need to take a hold if the horse hasnt be taught to respond in a respectful way. We teach our 2yo acceptance of the bit right from the start so its never a dramatic change in any part of their training program, its just part of the progressive foundation program here at Crystal Pines.

12.01.2022 I posted a month ago about how we had Petey scoped for ulcers and that we are treating him for it. He is in the pasture at night, then we take him out in the A....M. and put him in a pen for the day, as he needs to have an empty stomach when we give him the medicine later in the afternoon. We give him sucralfate first, then wait half an hour and them give him the omeprazole. Then wait an hour and then he goes back out in the pasture with Bella and Oscar. Weve been doing this daily for a month, and neither of the 2 medicines tastes good. When I go in to catch Petey to give him the medicine he often turns away and avoids me. I just allow him to do it, and I wait. He stops and I attempt an approach again. He turns and leaves again. I allow this for as long as it takes until he stands when I approach, usually 3-5 times. I think that if many people had this happening, they would feel the need to fix it, and possibly write a post on here asking how to go about that. I dont believe every negative behaviour needs to be solved. With a very sensitive horse like Petey, treating this like a problem would deteriorate the relationship I have with him. I believe allowing him to tell me how he feels about the medicine, and to walk away and avoid me, is what makes him stand still in the end and allow me to give it to him without an issue. Recently I posted a video about Polyvagal Theory, and talked about attunement, which Sarah Schlotte of Equusoma described to as "being seen, being heard, feeling felt and getting gotten", and I believe this is what is happening when I allow Petey to let me know how he feels about the medicine. He tells me "I dont really want to eat that stuff and I tell him " I know it tastes nasty, but if we want your tummy to feel better you need to take it". I think it really takes a change in a persons perspective to where you get to the point where you dont feel the need to fix everything with your horse, and looking back on my journey I never really thought Id arrive at this place, and I am so glad I did.

11.01.2022 Pm to book Lessons or PEMF therapy, or why not do both!

10.01.2022 Very educational!

10.01.2022 A great weekend Reining clinic was had at Benalla’s newly covered arena! Great air flow and shade made working in the heat comfortable along with a bunch of great riders and laughs along the way! A couple of riders new to reining took the opportunity to try out some spins on some older show horses. I aim to be using this facility fortnightly so Lessons and Pulse Therapy will be available regularly at the Benalla PC grounds. Keep an eye out for our dates.

09.01.2022 MEMBER MONDAY !! This week we introduce GVRHA member.... JACQUELINE RAGG... Q. At what age did you begin riding? A. Around 10 years old. My mum gave in to my nagging and took me to weekly riding lessons in Bayswater Vic. Q. What was your first horse? A. I got my first horse at 13, his name was Nonsense, a bay Quarter Horse who had been used for Polo. He was great at Games at Pony Club. Q. How long have you been Reining? A. 8 years. Q. How and why did you become involved in Reining? A. My daughter Chelsea took up Reining, so my dressage riding took a back seat - it was a matter of if you cant beat them, join them! Q. Current horse/s? A. Mondure Lil Calgirldunit (Lethal Lil Calboy x Eden Vale My Daddys Dunit). Stable name: Milly. Q. Do you train with a Reining Trainer? A. Yes, Chelsea helps me whenever I can pin her down and she doesnt quit with me until we manage to get a positive result, no matter how small. Ive gained so much over the years attending clinics with local, interstate and overseas trainers but I find the more regular lessons you have with someone the more you and your horse improve. Q. What is your most memorable moment in Reining? A. I had a great State Show a few years ago winning and coming equal first in a few big classes. I had worked so hard to do well and I was on such a high for a day or two at the show, then the thought hit me - how on earth am I going to keep this up! Q. What is your favourite thing about Reining? A. The well trained horses - horses that can go from flat out to whoa then stand calmly straight away to listen for the next instruction. Q. Do you have any other hobbies outside of Reining? A. Lots of my hobbies are also my work, but I also have an E-Mountain bike which I love riding on the bush mountain tracks around home. Q. What is the best advice you have been given in life? A. My mothers favourite saying was, "Count your blessings" - every time I hop on a horse I consider myself very blessed (even when it all goes pear shaped!) Ken Anderson Equine Photography

09.01.2022 You can choose courage or you can choose comfort but you cannot choose both

08.01.2022 Great explanation of this, keep it black and white!

08.01.2022 Building confidence in a horse, can be a interesting and sometimes frustrating thing for a human to understand. A lot of times it seems the general public thinks more petting and praising is what calms a horse or build its confidence. And while that is in PART true, AS IMPORTANTLY, the other part of confidence building is the development of Obedience. Obedience Grows Confidence....but why, how?... Because obedience is born from structure, and discipline. And when I refer to discipline I mean order, and organization. And what most dont realize is that horses in a natural herd environment, are VERY structured, disciplined and organized. It feels good, or "natural" to a horse to be held accountable to this structure... And sometimes fur flies during that! So when we provide the same structure, and provide it consistently, the horse will settle and gain confidence in themselves. And, will begin to trust the human more and more, because Youve given the horse a sure thing to count on. Obedience + Confidence = Trust that can truly go both ways ~Kalley Copied from Kelley Krickebergs Training Barn Picture of 2yo Mary future Reining prospect in training at Crystal Pines

08.01.2022 Great video, this isn’t just for 2yo!

08.01.2022 MEMBER MONDAY !! This week we introduce GVRHA member.... NICOLA RISEBOROUGH... Q. At what age did you begin riding? A. I began riding at Pine Farm Riding School when I was 7. Q. What was your first horse? A. I got my first Pony Club horse when I was 12, a beautiful palomino. Q. How long have you been Reining? A. My first show was in 2016. Q. How and why did you become involved in Reining? A. I met Mel Sporry when she was cantering along my nature strip and I asked her what sort of riding she did, she told me "Reining". I had never heard of it before so I went and watched a couple of reining shows and thought "yep Im in" and bought myself a mare by Hank Man Leo. Q. Current horse/s? A. ME Shesa Smart Chic (Smart Lil Remichic x Shesa Senorita). Stable name: Minnie. Q. Do you train with a Reining Trainer? A. Yes. I have enjoyed doing lessons and clinics with a few different trainers. Several that have helped me on my reining journey are Todd McCormick, Mick Taylor, David Norbury, Chelsea Ragg, Shane Watts, Brett McDonald. Q. What is your most memorable moment in Reining? A. Winning the Green Rider class at the 2019 VRHA State Show. Q. What is your favourite thing about Reining? A. Apart from hanging out with my beautiful pony, definitely the reining people - lots of laughs and super encouraging, I wouldnt do it if it wasnt fun! Q. 07.01.2022 ARE YOU A MECHANIC OR ARE YOU A HORSEMAN? ~ So many people have made a decision on a horse before they ever even started trying and giving that horse a chance.... Everybody wants instant gratification. Some horses take longer to develop than others. Be a horsemen and recognize that. Theres a lot of mechanics and not a lot of horsemen. Take your time and be willing to let that horse figure it out on his own, because when you go out in that show pen theyve got to be willing and confident. In order to achieve that it takes time and patience. ~ THE KEY TO SUCCESS IS KNOWING . @mattmillsreining.com See more
