24.01.2022 CIDER FOR BREAKFAST If you've read Travelling with Baggage, then you would know that when I lived in Glasgow I never had mornings off... I was always working. At night I would always walk past this bar that did a traditional Scottish breakfast that I was keen to try. I had told many a backpacker that they should try it out and they always came back with raving reviews. ... The one morning I did have off, I decided to grab Sean and go to the bar. Only to find out that the chef didn't show up. Of all morning for this guy NOT to show up. I was gutted. The only option was what was on tap. In my little self pitty moment, Sean managed to snap this picture of me. If you had asked me at the time if I wanted a photo I would have thought you were crazy or taking the absolute piss out of me. Instead, I'm glad Sean took this picture because, in hindsight, it was one of my most ironic moments in Glasgow. 24.01.2022 MINDSET I never thought that I would ever be able to travel let alone get out of debt. When I made the conscious decision that I was going to travel and I was going to get out of debt things changed. My outlook on life changed. I didn't get so emotionally attached to my work, I just kept looking for more.... I ended up working full-time days for a mining company and full-time nights in a night club. On weekends I would take on any function work just to watch my bank balance grow. I sold items I didn't need. I moved into a hostel and made sure that any purchases I made, were for the greater good of me travelling. It was so satisfying to get rid of my credit card and to watch my bank balance grow and grow. All it took was for me to make the decision. You can do anything that you want to do, as long as you chose to take the steps required to achieve it. I did. If I'm reading for pleasure, I find a comfortable spot to lose myself in a book with no distractions. 14.01.2022 THE FIRST THING I THINK OF... when I think of Glasgow was how beautiful it was when I arrived at the wee hours of the morning. I took the Megabus from London to Glasgow. The ticket cost me 10 pounds and went all through the night. 10 hours to be exact. I thought that by taking the nightrider I would just fall asleep and wake up revived first thing in the morning. Boy, was I wrong? ... I managed to nab the front seat on the top of the double-decker bus, which meant more legroom, but it didn't account for the Scotsman behind me digging his knees into the back of my seat. Don't worry I was quick to rectify that. Who said Scottish people were scary? As soon as I hopped off at Buchanan Bus Station the air was crisp. I took a quick moment to appreciate the fact that I was once again in another new, historical location. The delayed gratification of finally arriving hit me hard. I quickly threw my backpack on and walked down Renfew St towards my hostel with a huge smile on my face ready for my next adventure. 07.01.2022 IT'S THAT GOOD! My heart swells with happiness every time someone makes the effort to message me to tell me their thoughts on my books. To have someone enjoy what you write and then to go to the effort to tell you is one of the best feelings.... When I started this project I didn't think anyone would want to read my story and that I am a fool for even trying, then to find out that people love what I wrote; how I wrote it to the point where they buy it for friends and family is indescribable. 07.01.2022 100KM TO GO When I commenced el Camino to Santiago de Compostela that it would be a physical challenge. Never did I realise how much of a mental challenge it would be as well. This particular hike was over 800km. By the time I hit the 100km to go mark, I'd already gone through the hardest part of my journey, mentally and was more than ready to get to the Cathedral.... 04.01.2022 NO EXPECTATIONS I honestly had no idea what to expect. You can read all the books you can find on the camino (which I did), watch the movies (I also did) and join all the forums on facebook that have past, present and future pilgrims constantly providing you with advice, but until you actually start walking you have no idea. On day one alone, I was late, it rained, I walked with a new friend and also lost that new friend. I hiked over the Pyrenees ...and walked through snow. I made new friends and drank wine and it wasn't until the wine was ordered in Spanish that I'd even realised that we had already crossed the border and I was in Spain. Your senses are in overload, trying to take it all in, not wanting to miss a second and I would do it all over again. 03.01.2022 GYPSIES!! Ever have that feeling, a moment too late, that you wish you hadn't done what you just did? Lauren and I certainly did. ... We've heard of gypsies on the trail and we'd seen the movie "The Way" so we 'knew' what they were all about. Mind you, we had never actually met a gypsy and could never actually make comment, but apparently they steal your things. The sign in this image says "Ring for good vibrations". The moment Lauren rang it, I said to her. What if that was to alert people that there are pilgrims in the area? I mean, it was late in the afternoon for people to be walking and there was no one around... it did also sound like a hippie kinda thing to do... 'ring for good vibrations....' 02.01.2022 HALFWAY MARK Another emotional day for us. We didn't realise that we were hitting the halfway mark today. If we did then we wouldn't have tried splitting up the night before. Lauren was working from her laptop whilst we were doing the camino and I was unintentionally distracting her from her work. As much as we made a conscious effort for Lauren to focus on her work and I looked after other things like cooking dinner while she was trying... to be productive, it just wasn't doing the trick.
