25.01.2022 As part of Anti-poverty week, the long day directors had the task of buying the ingredients for five days’ worth of lunches for a family of two adults and two children. We were all surprised by how difficult the task was meeting the budget of $20, with a shopping list in hand Michael Uttley, the director of Acacia early childhood set off to the local supermarket. Michael was surprised at how much extra time it took to ensure we stayed under budget and not buying any extras... even having to return a $0.89cent of tuna to remain under budget. It was amazing when we compared what we would have been able to purchase from the CS#1 food pantry for under $20. There were a lot more products for both the adults and children to enjoy and provide more variety and nutrition. In a more stark comparison for the same $20, we would have been able to buy four 600ml bottles of spring water from the local café. #antipovertyweek

05.01.2022 Pasta seemed like a good idea for a family of four, we added the beans into provide some protein and fibre to the meal and an onion to add some more flavour. We were excited to see that the Domino sauce was on special as we had planned to use a tin of tomatoes. The meal was easy to make however what we learnt that feeding a family on such a little amount meant that a lot of thought went into the planning of the meal from what would fill up the bellies of the family? What size onion would not send us over budget? How could we get as much flavour in the meal as possible?
