20.01.2022 Regular workplace hazard checks save lives. Can you recognise any safety hazards in your workplace? What went wrong, could it have been avoided and are other companies also making these same mistakes? A contractor with a Newcastle building company standing on a truck trailer while it was being loaded. This was possibly not seen as a hazardous activity that needed tighter controls although it became very apparent when the contractor fell off the trailer. The company reg...retfully, had not fully realised this, despite it having happened before. The company was fined $300,000, had a prior fatality three years earlier for the same situation. The judge rightfully asserted that no lessons had been learned or care taken, to design controls in the workplace so that this severe accident would never happen again. When the contractor fell from the trailer (and suffered a severe brain injury) it is unlikely the company had completed or actioned these three steps: 1. review of their management responsibility protocol 2. clarity of the hazards staff encounter 3. design and management of controls to limit, reduce, or protect against these risks. Many companies are blindly unaware of the hazards and controls that are necessary in their workplace. It is not enough to hope that staff dont have a moments inattention and do a dumb thing that wrecks their life. Sometimes it is easier for someone outside the company to provide the fresh insight to see where the hazards havent been identified and the controls arent in place. Once hazards are identified, risk assessments are applied from a risk-rating matrix. To implement controls of a hazard, the following options are considered and evaluated: 1. Elimination physically remove the hazard 2. Substitution - replace the hazard 3. Engineering isolate people from the hazard 4. Administrative change the way people work 5. PPE protect the worker with Personal Protective Equipment These controls also need to be reviewed periodically to ensure that they are working. Recommended elements of an effective health and safety management system are: Safety plans Policies and procedures Training Monitoring Supervision Reporting It may seem like a lot of work, but there are external service companies that implement these for businesses to save considerable management time and effort. This also overcomes the tendency to have all the paperwork filed away in a back office (often never to be seen again). With some assistance, more Newcastle businesses will avoid these serious and potentially fatal accidents, as well as the heavy fines and the resultant bad publicity.

16.01.2022 Add to the discussion - what precautions are you taking for reopening your business during Covid-19? 1. Discuss space. Some team members will be better at identifying the most efficient new workflow systems with your tools, equipment and furniture than others. 14.01.2022 Do you know about mental health care at work? Concern for our mental health usually takes a back seat to our more pressing issues. Some senior Novocastrians have in their memory a major earthquake and floods, but we all remember the recent droughts and bush fires. Can it be assumed that we are all mentally tough and resilient and will naturally cope with Covid-19, and all the big challenges this major disruption has caused? ...Continue reading
14.01.2022 Is your computer monitor set up properly on your desk? When deeply focussed on our work projects, we sometimes give scant regard to our physical bodies and our posture - until they start causing us problems. There are too many sufferers out there with preventable (and often painful) health conditions that our discussion of ergonomics deserves a closer look. To keep the body strong, flexible and without strain, avoid sitting for long periods without a break. Create oppo...Continue reading
13.01.2022 Would you like to improve the safety systems in your workplace? Here are some revealing questions that apply to all PCBUs (persons conducting a business or undertaking). Does the Workplace Health and Safety Policy have the engagement and support of the principal officers? ... Check. That is the first step before it can and does filter down to the crew. Is there a capable manager who can champion the best practice methods for hazardous work situations? Check. Knowing how to keep workers safe from impatient supervisors and realigning workers from their own dangerous gung-ho work habits is the challenge. How many of todays workforce regret that incident that caused their bad back or chronic pain over twenty years ago? Can hazards be accurately identified? Check. Be careful that familiarity is not breeding contempt. Workers can become accustomed to a dangerous environment that would frighten and alarm a visitor to that workplace. Is four storeys up with no harness or barriers a serious hazard? Absolutely. Do unsecured heavy loads sometimes fall and kill people. Yes they do. Is there a margin for human error? Workers get tired, particularly if they work long hours or have a small child at home and their sleep is compromised. Fatigue causes a lot of workplace injuries. What is the likelihood that a worker could trip or fall if they are not fully observant and attentive? Creating a buffer to allow for moments of distraction is the same reason that safety guards are put on tools and machinery. People sometimes have lapses in judgment. Many employers are already mindful that their workplace health and safety practices (or lack thereof) are a serious concern. Good employers are motivated to catch up with their current obligations, whilst the others neglect their workers safety. The principal officers of a business will be relieved to discover that the safety wheel has already been invented. The Take Five checklists and hazard identifications have already been explored and documented, with a full library of Safe Work Method Statements available for any kind of workplace situation. All that is needed is to check with information toolkits that are already available. Why make bad business decisions with your livelihood and those of your workers (and their families), when good ones can be made with a little enquiry? Tim and Sally Williams are the Newcastle/Hunter advisors for CSA. They are happy to assist any construction contractors (or other businesses) with a free Audit and Inspection of their work environments. This will start the process of keeping workplaces compliant with current legislation and workers safe. Enquire today.
13.01.2022 If you work at heights, do you think you have enough training and have been given the right equipment? When workman are seen installing a TV aerial on a two-storey house, do you ever wonder if there are sufficient safety precautions in place? Have you noticed that when staff or visitors think "that's a dodgy work practice and an accident waiting to happen" - it often does?...Continue reading

03.01.2022 Do you know who the first aiders are in your workplace? Every day at workplaces throughout Australia, first aid incidents occur. The aim of first aid is to preserve life, prevent illness or injury, relieve pain and promote recovery....Continue reading
02.01.2022 Are you or your workers exposed to silica dust? There are legal duties to protect workers from developing silicosis. Silicosis has been such a major worry to SafeWork this year, that they were actively targeting potential culprits practising unsafe work methods. In addition, SafeWork has upgraded their work requirements to manage this risk better. The reason for their concern is the number of Australians who have been affected and the severity of their medical cases. Ex...Continue reading
