The Australian Cancer and Health Sciences Competition (ACHSC) launched the University Cancer Case Competition (UCCC) in partnership with the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health (MSPGH). The competition this year will provide university students with the opportunity to work on and develop an innovative solution to a problem in the area of colorectal cancer screening. The top team will be awarded a monetary prize of $1,000..., and offered a research internship at the MSPGH, as a means to assist them in bringing their theoretical solution into reality. Researchers have developed a blood test that can detect the presence of eight common cancers including ovarian, liver, stomach, pancreatic, oesophageal, bowel, lung or breast. The blood test, called CancerSEEK, detects tiny fragments of DNA and proteins released into the blood stream from cancer cells.
