25.01.2022 Getting messy again this week at our OSHC activities making Choc-Banana Weetbix balls. While a great snack - thinking outside the nutrition box this is a fantastic textural and fine motor activity for kids. We mash, crush, shape and roll with our little hands and have mushy, crumbly and sticky textures. We also have a lot of coconut to clean up at the end
25.01.2022 Getting prepped for school - check out these ideas
24.01.2022 Its School Holidays! Time to chill out with these super easy fruit ice blocks. 1 can of fruit 1 cup natural or vanilla yogurt... Tip both (including the juices from the canned fruit) in a blender, whizz up and freeze. Yum!

23.01.2022 If you listen to podcasts and are interested in nutrition then the new Thinking Nutrition with Dr Tim Crowe may be just what your looking for over your morning tea break. He discusses evidence based information and interprets that into practical ways you can apply good nutrition into your lifestyle. Yesterdays podcast was on Blue Zones. I found the link between nutrition, physical activity and social connectivity so important. https://podcasts.apple.com//thinking-nutriti/id1494549885
22.01.2022 Bananas are an awesome snack on their own but this hot humid weather can ripen them quickly. Here a few ideas other than the go to banana bread to use them up. Don't forget if you don't have the time for making a recipe straight away you can always just peel and freeze them - either sliced or whole - if a freezer safe container
21.01.2022 Its been super hot lately (if you hadnt noticed ), so keeping hydrated is really important. While theres no exact magic number on how much water to drink a day, aiming for around 6-8 glasses is a good start - remember you will need more if you are out in the sun, exercising or sweating a lot. Plain tap water is a cheap, safe and convenient option but all types of fluid count - limit those with lots of added sugars and of course alcohol. Try adding sliced fruit, mint or c...ucumber to plain water for something special and to add a bit of flavour. Stay cool!
21.01.2022 This is a very cute idea for encouraging role play around food and eating - without too much expense at the toy shop!
21.01.2022 Having fun with the Digestive System yesterday at Bargara SS. We used forks as teeth to "chew" up some crackers, then "digested" them in our stomach with some gastric acid (aka soda water) before squeezing all the nutrients out through our stocking intestine . Gross but FUN learning!
19.01.2022 Friday Funny If you love food you gotta love a farmer
19.01.2022 Last week at our OSHC activities we did a cheese making experiment. We heated some milk and added vinegar to split the curd from the whey. Once strained, we ended up with a fresh, soft cheese (or gooey, cheesy porridge as the kids named it). You can add salt, herbs and spices to make a great accompaniment to crackers or add it to a paneer style Indian curry like I did. With the school holidays coming up why not try this experiment at home
19.01.2022 These Christmassy fruit trifle cups went down a treat again today St Luke's Bundaberg Vacation Care. I think it might be this hot weather thats making them so popular

12.01.2022 Ultra Processed Foods are a topic I've recently been exploring. While most foods we eat undergo some processing like cooking or preserving to make it safe and tasty, Ultra Processed (UP) foods are those that have undergone industrial processing with often little or none of the original whole food present or identifiable in the food. You can identify UP foods by looking at the ingredients list for ingredients that you would normally find in home cooking and/or food additives ...that are purely used for cosmetic purposes (like added colours and flavours). Some UP foods are easy to identify but other can be more tricky like nutrient modified white breads. Recent research is showing that UP foods may have an undesirable impact on health independent of purely calorie and nutrient make up of the foods. This is important when we consider that about 50% (higher for some groups) of our food energy currently comes from UP foods in developed countries. I will be including info on identify UP foods in my shopping tours and group education when they are back up and running. If you are interested in learning more you can check out the link below for the NOVA food classification system. http://archive.wphna.org//WN-2016-7-1-3-28-38-Monteiro-Can

11.01.2022 Was sad to finish up this terms after school care workshops with Kalkie SS last week. The kids are always so enthusiastic - especially when they are cooking. On Friday, we made Mexican Tortillas. It was a great opportunity to talk to the kids about herbs, spices and other ingredients (like lime juice) that add flavour, interest and cultural tones to our food.

07.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who participated in last nights Let's Get Fuelled for School Workshop. I'm hoping you all picked up some ideas or tips to make breakfasts and lunches easier in your household. It was lovely to see the discussions happening and to get all your feedback.
06.01.2022 Do you consider portion size on packaged food - its particularly tricky for foods that appear to be packaged as a single serving but actually contain multiple serves. This is something we look at in our supermarket shopping tours. Tours will be back when term starts!
06.01.2022 It's Friday and we are heading into 2 lunchbox free days - HOORAY! But it's still a great day to book in for next weeks Let's Get Fuelled for School workshop. Send me an email or a PM to register
06.01.2022 Hi All! Sorry, I've been quiet for a while as we all adjust to the new circumstances of the world. Hope you all are adjusting and coping as well as can be expected Obviously, I'm not running any regular supermarket tours or workshops at the moment but thought I would try to post a few tips and ideas when I can. Here's a few key nutrition things to get you started. Firstly, it's an emotional time and food and eating is often connected with emotions. This is okay sometimes, ...but can be unhealthy when it becomes excessive. I would aim to eat "mindfully". This means deciding if you are really hungry/want a food; choosing the food that you really feel like eating; eating slowly and enjoying the food; stopping when you are comfortable full (not stuffed). Enjoy cooking and eating with your family in the time you have. If you find yourself with a bit of extra time it's great to experiment with new or detailed recipes. If you find yourself working and schooling from home as well as trying to keep on top of the general household management then maybe just stick to some quick pastas, stir-fries or pop something in the slow cooker and forget it until dinner. Do try to sit down as a family to eat together and if possible discuss a non-corona topic! Lastly, be aware of health food quackery that is rife at this time. While eating well and keeping healthy no doubt generally reduces your risk of becoming unwell and may help you recover faster when sick - there are no proven immune boosting super foods that are a magic cure to this virus. So enjoy a healthy, varied diet with lots and fruit and veg and definitely add some garlic to your pasta sauce but no need to chew on a whole clove every morning! Stay safe, and enjoy eating P.S. The pics are some meals I was able to spend time making - moussaka, gnocchi and loukoumades. This was all before school went back this week though
06.01.2022 School back and so are Supermarket Shopping Tours! If you are interested in learning more about shopping well, label reading and general healthy eating tips why not book in for a tour.
03.01.2022 Me deciding whether to use the avocadoes I bought for this afternoons workshop - maybe they'll be ripe in a few more hours
03.01.2022 Wow, this is beautiful! What talented Bundaberg producers and creators we have. Who would have expected a beetroot bouquet
02.01.2022 Mmm, clearly these weren't made from couch potatoes Seriously though - food marketers uses all sorts of tricks to encourage you to purchase their food. Think about what the food actually is and where it sits (or not) within the 5 food groups, what ingredients it contains and how processed it is. You can enjoy your chips - but don't be fooled in to thinking they'll help you run a marathon!
02.01.2022 The Country Kitchens program is a great initiative- if your looking for ideas for school lunches why not check out their workshop tomorrow or next Wednesday.
02.01.2022 Supermarket Shopping Tours are available for bookings until the end of school term. Call or message to arrange a time to suit you
01.01.2022 The recent rain has certainly boosted everything growing in my vegie garden - particularly the green leafy veg! Green vegetables such as spinach, silverbeet, kale, broccoli, lettuce and Asian greens are sources of fibre, folate, vitamin C, pre-vitamin A, magnesium and iron. These play an important role in cell function, growth and maintenance, bowel health, energy production and prevention of chronic diseases such as cancer. Aim for at least 1 serve of leafy greens as part of... your 5 veg a day. Other that a side salad you can add greens to smoothies, stir fries, soups, pasta or use large leaves for wrapping tasty fillings (think san choy bau or cabbage rolls). This silverbeet is destined for a silverbeet & cheese pie
01.01.2022 We went a bit Christmassy for our nutrition workshop yesterday afternoon with the kids making and enjoying some fruit trifle cups. They decorated their cups using watermelon shapes which we cut with some Christmas cookie cutters. A big thank-you to Bargara OSHC for hosting nutrition workshops this term. I certainly had lots of fun exploring nutrition in different ways - hopefully the kids did too.
01.01.2022 Don't forget it's 2 for 1 Supermarket Tours during March! These tours focus on providing you with skills in shopping and label reading to help you make better informed decisions when buying your food
01.01.2022 Do you have a non blow method for birthday cake? I hear the clap method works well
