25.01.2022 Winter is the perfect time to get your top to toe skin check. Fair skin is more susceptible to melanoma and other skin cancers - even in young people. The problem with fair skin is that most people who catch the sun have freckles which can camouflage early skin cancers making them more difficult to detect. In winter freckles fade and provide the perfect canvas for a detailed and proper skin check. Appointments are available with Dr Kathryn Eikenhorst now. Book by calling the clinic on 90913958 or conveniently click below and book online. https://www.hotdoc.com.au//collins-street-surgery/doctors/

21.01.2022 We are very fortunate to have the lovely Dr Kathryn and Dr Rebecca available for telehealth during these challenging times. When in Kalgoorlie Dr Kathryn is our visiting skin cancer doctor - but when at home in Port Macquarie she continues to support the Goldfields with telehealth services. Dr Rebecca is a GP in Victoria and has been providing services via telehealth for the past three months. The clinic would like to thank them for their contribution to our community. https://www.hotdoc.com.au//collins-street-surgery/doctors/

21.01.2022 Dr Kathryn and Dr Bek are supporting patients of Collins Street Surgery with telehealth appointments. Since the introduction of Medicare rebates for telehealth services, Doctors have provided over 1 million telehealth consultations. This is a safe, effective and efficient way to conduct a clinical consult as an adjunct to having face to face consults available. Perfect for: Scripts (not S8 or authority drugs of addiction) Referrals ... Mental Health Care appointments (and care plans once a diagnosis has been established for the patient to access psychological services) Chronic disease management such as diabetes, thyroid disease, heart disease and referrals to allied health with Medicare rebates. Acute illness (if a physical exam is required then our telehealth doctors arrange an urgent appointment at the clinic or refer to Emergency services as deemed appropriate) https://www.hotdoc.com.au//collins-street-surgery/doctors/

21.01.2022 Plenty of on-day appointments by telehealth with Dr Rebecca on Sunday with back up on-site doctor for those who need clinical examinations and face to face consults. https://www.hotdoc.com.au///collins-street-surgery/doctors

20.01.2022 Update of the health directions for people returning to the Goldfields as there seems to be some confusion. Current WA Regulations state that if you have been tested (as you are symptomatic or have been to a high risk place) you MUST go directly home and stay home until you get a negative result. You must follow the health directions ongoing - which includes: If you arrived in the Goldfields after 6pm last evening (31/1) then you must remain at home in self-isolation for the...Continue reading

16.01.2022 #handhygeine #cough #flusymptoms This is a reminder that General Practice, and specifically Collins Street Surgery, is not an appropriate place for you to attend if you have respiratory symptoms, despite there being no active cases of COVID-19 in our region. Last year (no COVID) we lost 122 staff days due to illness, nearly all upper and lower respiratory. In 2018 we had two clinicians hospitalised and one that was off work and isolated for nearly 4 weeks including a stay in... the high dependency unit. This year we are down to minimal staff providing face to face consulting due to state border restrictions and international border closures preventing new doctors who had planned to arrive earlier in the year not been able to enter Australia. On Monday Dr Tariq advised that THREE patients presented with URTI symptoms without first advising staff and taking instructions. This is unacceptable and a timely reminder that without the health of the practitioners you have NO MEDICAL SERVICES. There is no place for complacency when we are only potentially a few weeks behind other states in outbreaks. There is no place for lack of forethought or insight into the risk patients pose to both the clinicians, administration staff (we have pregnant staff) and immunocompromised patients who attend our practice. We are asking and insisting: IF you have respiratory symptoms you DO NOT ENTER THE CLINIC Telephone the clinic The Doctor will call you and consult you by phone and make a decision if it is safe to see you If it is not safe you will be directed to the testing services in Kalgoorlie If it is safe the Doctor will arrange: a) a consult in your car, b) in a separate consulting room away from the main practice area c) outdoors We are not turning patients away but making appropriate decisions to keep us all safe, now, and potentially during another outbreak.

10.01.2022 Men of the Goldfields are more likely to have skin cancer than our city friends. The harsh environment, outdoor living and occupational exposure substantially increase the risk of melanoma and Basal cell carcinomas, even in men as young as 30 years old. Dr Kathryn Eikenhorst has trained in skin cancer medicine and is currently here in Kalgoorlie to skin check our patients and any new patients of Kalgoorlie-Goldfields region. The comprehensive skin consult includes family and personal history, medication and medical conditions, skin typing and then a top to toe skin check in your underwear - spot checks available for spots of concern as well. Book now 90913958 or online with hotdoc https://www.hotdoc.com.au//collins-street-surgery/doctors/

07.01.2022 Dr Watson has been visiting Kalgoorlie for the past FIVE years providing weight loss surgery consultation and medical advice.

06.01.2022 Appointments available today and tomorrow with our lovely regular locum, Dr Ong - Scripts ONLY and updating referrals are bulk-billed. https://www.hotdoc.com.au//collins-str/doctors/dr-geok-ong

06.01.2022 Thankfully most of our patients are thoughtful and understand that ringing the clinic to "just talk to the doctor" is not possible. BUT for those three patients who called the clinic today, resulting in the verbal abuse of staff on the phone, this is unacceptable. Appointments must be made. We have plenty of appointments and doctors EVERYDAY. You can a) make an appointment online ... b) ring the practice to book an appointment We are offering telephone appointments for your convenience and face to face for those who want or need them. No more reminders - we will ask you to find another practice if you abuse our staff. See more

05.01.2022 Dr Kathryn will be working this weekend and offering skin cancer checks. Great opportunity for patients who work during the week to come in after-hours for a top to toe check. Risk factors for skin cancer include fair/freckled skin that burn easily, red-hair, past skin cancers, family history of skin cancer, working outdoors, past use of a sunbed/tanning bed and taking medications that cause immunosuppression against diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, SLE, Psoriasis, Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis, Polymyalgia rheumatica, vasculitis and hepatitis. Call 90913958 today to book your appointment.

02.01.2022 There have been a lot of patients presenting lately with "allergy testing" having paid almost $300 for a test and then $$$ for supplements. I have attached an article about IgG testing and want to summerise the medical and biochemical reasons that this test is unlikely to help you improve your health. Ig G - or immunoglobulin G are part of a healthy immune system- in fact if you don't have enough you can become chronically ill. IgG is a memory immunity - initially on first e...xposure to a pathogen (illness) the IgM antibodies are released and over time the body will make Ig G so next time that pathogen is in your body it can recognise it quickly and respond. This response is NOT an ALLERGY response. An allergy response is when the body is exposed to something (can be anything but common things include penicillin, nuts, bee stings, dust mites, mould, grasses) that triggers IgE immune response. When plasma cells are exposed to an allergen they release IgE is released this results on second exposure the allergen-IgE combination attaching to mast cells. Mast cells contain a number of things - but one that we hear of commonly is histamine. Histamine cause smooth muscle contraction, blood vessels to dilate and the release of gastric secretions. The are found in the skin, lungs, stomach and a few other places. When we have an allergic reaction and a release of histamine we can have a runny nose, eyes, increased heart rate, bronchospasm (difficult breathing) and possibly red, itchy,. blotchy ski (urticaria) - depending on the allergen the reactions vary. A sensitivity is different to an allergy - a common intolerance or sensitive is milk (not allergy) and wheat (not coeliacs) - these cannot be biochemically tested for but removing them from the diet can lead to people feeling better, less bloated and gut symptoms - it is essentially a trial and error. We are big on people balancing their supplements: Calcium + Vitamin D + magnesium - for strong health bones Iron + Vit C - for normal levels of haemoglobin and a health immune system B12 + folate - especially important in pregnant ladies as folate reduces neural tube defects in babies If you would like a blood test to check to see if you have allergies then speak with your doctor. We can test for IgE and if it is elevated then test for staple foods (wheat dairy nuts etc) and common pathogens (as listed above) - the tests are bulk-billed to medicare from the pathology company. If your Ig E is very elevated and we cant pin-point your allergy we can arrange skin prick and patch testing via an allergist or speciality centre. The cost ranges from $385-$550 depending on the number of allergens plus a consult fee. Remembering the purpose of allergy testing is to help you avoid those allergens or be desensitised. https://www.aaaai.org//libra/allergy-library/IgG-food-test

01.01.2022 Dr Kathryn has skin checks available this weekend for all you hard working people! - New patients welcome - book by calling 90913958 Want some skin stats: In two weeks - Dr Kathryn has picked up melanomas on THREE unsuspecting patients. The most common skin cancer diagnosed are Basal Cell Carcinoma - and unless these are on the face or very large they can be excised right here at Collins Street Surgery. Patients requiring a Plastic Surgeon for the removal of facial or highly visible areas are referred to Dr Tim Hewitt and Dr Tim Cooper who are very accomodating to our Kalgoorlie patients. Follow up is done here at the practice, sutures removed and wound reviewed.

01.01.2022 As of the 10th December Collins Street Surgery will not be taking new patients for General Practice services unless they have specific medical needs. These are the following exemptions for new patients 1. Skin Cancer Checks with Dr Kathryn Eikenhorst 2. Weightloss surgery patients of Dr Stephen Watson needing ongoing support 3. Infertility or pregnancy for shared care with Perth private consultants or public hospital services. ... Between 1/12/2019 and 8/12/2020 Dr Kathryn and Dr April have services over 6000 patients between them with the remainder 6400 of services supported by locum doctors, Dr Marzieh and Dr Raj prior to them relocating. In order to be able to provide quality medical services, have on-day appointments available, reasonable time to follow-up, after hours services and telehealth support we need to limit the number of patients that we service until we have additional staff to assist with consultations. Patients CAN come to the clinic and complete a new patient application form with a request to join the clinic if they have special medical needs that they feel need to be addressed by doctors at Collins Street Surgery. Each patient will be considered and the workload of the doctors to assess if they can join the clinic. We understand that this will cause some people to be upset/annoyed but unfortunately with the current lack of doctors in town the clinic has been still adding new patients with nearly 700 new patients in the last 12 months. With the influx of new arrivals to the town we now need to close the books until further notice. Declining GP numbers are a huge concern for the region and to date no solutions have been put forward, even locum doctors are difficult to obtain to cover leave. If you would like to raise this concern to be investigated then please write to you local member of parliament asking them to consider the current GP crisis in Kalgoorlie an urgent matter that needs their attention before more doctors relocate from the region.
