22.01.2022 SCAM ALERT Every day, hackers and scammers are trying to exploit different types of security vulnerabilities. The latest phone scam to hit Australia could see ...many innocent people easily becoming victims. This scam involves a phone call where the scammer asks the victim the question "can you hear me?" repeatedly, pretending they are on a bad phone line. When the victim answers "yes" their voice is recorded. This recorded "yes" is then used by the scammers to authorise payments in the victims name. Police encourage residents to do three things to fight this scam: - Spread the word - If you receive a "can you hear me?" phone call - hang up and don't respond. - If you did respond with a "yes" - alert your financial institution and monitor your accounts closely.

17.01.2022 #ScamAlert Fact: The AFP doesnt send emails to you from a Gmail account. Fact: The AFP will never ask for photos of your fingerprints by email.... Fact: Theres a new scam circulating that ironically is claiming to help victims of scams get their money back. The email is pretending to be from the ACORN Management Unit in the AFP this doesnt exist. Remember, Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN) is the place to report cybercrime. Dont respond to the email. REPORT and DELETE.

17.01.2022 SCAM ALERT! Beware of a circulating 'fake bill scam' How it works: Scammers obtain information from a potential victim's social media and stolen post in order t...o gain access to the victim's email accounts; where emailed invoices such as telephone, electricity or gas bills are obtained. The scammers then use the information from these bills to draft fake invoices and send these to the victim. How to protect yourself: Pay close attention to the email address of the sender. Look closely for differences on your bills, which could be as small as an extra letter, number or dot. Compare these with ones received for previous, legitimate invoices. If you believe you have been a target this scam, please report online via ACORN https://www.acorn.gov.au/

16.01.2022 #SCAM ALERT Weve been receiving quite a few calls from the public in relation to an email thats doing the rounds. This email purports to be from the AFP, serv...ing a subpoena on the recipient. There are several links in the email which may be malicious. Dont click on them. Just delete the email from your Inbox and Deleted folder. The AFP does not issue subpoenas via email. If youre concerned youve responded to one of these emails, you can report it through the ACORN (www.acorn.gov.au) or to SCAMwatch (www.scamwatch.gov.au) Please help us make your friends aware of this. #AusFedPolice

15.01.2022 Guys please be aware that this scam is still doing the rounds. Even our colleagues at ACT Policing Media got it in their inbox yesterday. The scammers have alte...red the email slightly and many people are being caught out, despite the tragic grammar. "Dispute the particular the liability, within 28 time." As if. The AFP will never send you traffic infringements by email. Do not pay any money. Do not click on any links. Please just delete it. There's no need to call us to tell us you got it, but if you've inadvertently clicked on a link and suspect your computer or phone might be affected by a virus, you may need to contact a professional computer expert for help. #AusFedPolice #scams #grammarpolice

13.01.2022 Dont take the bait. Phishing scams are costing Australians thousands of dollars each month. To protect yourself: 1. Dont click on links or attachments from e...mails claiming to be someone and asking you to verify or update details. DELETE THESE. 2. Do an internet search of the exact phrases used in the email or message to see if they have been sent to others and are scams. 3. Look for the secure symbol a closed padlock or unbroken key icon at the bottom right corner of your browser. 4. Check that the website reads https NOT just http 5. Never provide your personal, credit card or online account details to anyone who calls claiming to be your bank. Ask for the callers name and number and check with the organisation they claim to work for. Check out www.scamwatch.gov.au for more information. #AusFedPolice #Scamwatch #PhishingScams

13.01.2022 SCAM ALERT! Beware of unsolicited phone calls from suspects who claim to be calling from legitimate IT companies. The scammer will allege that your computer is ...infected and in need of urgent repair. The victim will be guided to allow remote access to their computer for the fake technician to assess the issue. DO NOT GIVE THEM ACCESS! They could potentially infect your PC with a Cryptolocker virus which renders your device unusable and requires payment to be removed. They also have the ability to steal your personal information. If you believe you have been the target of this scam or similar, you can report to your local Police Station or online via: https://www.acorn.gov.au/

10.01.2022 That moment when you open an attachment in an email, your computer freezes and you get a message that says you have to pay a fee to get it released. Its enough... to make you wanna cry. To protect yourself from the #Wannacry Ransomware virus, SLOW DOWN when youre checking your emails. Do you know the sender? Is there an attachment? Were you expecting an email from this person? If you answered no to any of those questions, think twice before clicking. And if you havent downloaded your security updates, or backed up your files, do it now!
