23.01.2022 This morning we did a post mortem on a Tawny Frogmouth for a local clinic. Often mistaken as 'owls', Tawny Frogmouths are in fact more closely related to hummingbirds than to owls. This poor bird had a fracture that was most likely caused when hit by a car. Vehicle injuries to these birds are common because of their habit of sitting beside roads at night to capture insects. The VDL does quite a bit of wildlife work in addition to commercial diagnostics in domestic species. This work helps keep an eye on wildlife health in our region, which is important for agricultural and environmental biosecurity. https://australian.museum/l/animals/birds/tawny-frogmouth/

23.01.2022 Did you know that the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) offers the most advanced diagnostics in the world for one of the most serious wildlife diseases - Beak and Feather Disease Virus? This virus is a listed Key Threatening Process for Australia's unique and charismatic parrots and the work of the VDL is critical to effectively managing the disease in recovery programs for threatened species including the critically endangered Orange-bellied Parrot (pictured).

23.01.2022 Interesting feline case of the week: cytology of bile from a young cat that presented with hyperbilirubinaemia. Note the neutrophilic inflammation and intracellular bacteria. On gram stain there were gram negative rods and our microbiology team cultured Salmonella from this sample.

22.01.2022 Our sister Enterprise, the Veterinary Clinical Centre, has a brand new facility designed to facilitate best practice in terms of biosafety. The ill horses also get gold standard care and conditions including climate controlled stables and HEPA filtered air.
