23.01.2022 What an amazing week we've had, so many indigenous learning experiences and the sharing of culture, we ended our week with a group cooking activity by making some indigenous flag cookies. NAIDOC Week celebrations allow us to help children gain an understanding of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their traditions and their connection to our land, this understanding fosters connections to our indigenous peoples that will assist them through their lifelong learning journey.
23.01.2022 Quick the floor is lava, yep you guessed it last week saw us exploring cause and effect with our self made sand pit volcanos, the children were very excited to see the volcano erupt and lava spill down the sides. A child learns the concept of making things happen within their first year. It starts with simple cues, such as: when they call out for you, you will come to them; or when they shake a toy, it will make noise. Developing cause and effect is important as your child learns that their behaviour and actions result in a response. This helps your child to develop communication and cognition skills, which are necessary to understand the cause and effect relationship.

22.01.2022 KINDY'S WILDLIFE RESCUE CENTRE Earlier in the year some children had seen a flying fox outside on the power lines when coming into Kindy. This sparked a discussion about flying foxes, which evolved into all of us talking about the animals that have been hurt in the bush fires. The children shared stories of images they had seen on the news of lots of smoke from fires, helicopters dropping water on houses and animals that had been hurt. From here we decided to set up our very ...own Wildlife Rescue Centre in our Kindy where the children have been very busy looking after the animals. We have wombats, kookaburras, koalas, a platypus, flying foxes and even a baby turtle. The children said that we needed lots of pillows and blankets to make them feel comfy. They role played caring for the animals with bandages, socks, pouches, doctors equipment and even a magic wand! Children absorb everything around them, they see and hear so much more than we sometimes realise. Having group discussions about what is happening in the world around them is important as it helps them to process what's going on and to ask questions. Teaching our children to help someone or something in need is an important skill that will stay with them for life. See more

21.01.2022 Baa Baa, Neigh, Neigh, Hoot Hoot, can you match the sound to the picture? Our kinder group are really enjoying our interactive listening corner matching sounds to pictures. Matching activities like these bring about deep concentration which is calming and deeply satisfying for children. Children at this age are using their developing memory, utilising their ability to store, organise and retrieve information, and recall information in relation to something they have seen before. Matching activities also give children the opportunity to problem solve, by questioning and asking themselves with the satisfaction of finding the result - the answer

21.01.2022 Today we had a visit from Ricky Possum with her imaginary visit to Granddad's Farm, we had such a great time, we met some of the animals from the farm and had a great old Aussie sing along Children benefit from watching theatre productions in so many ways, it can boost literacy and vocabulary, encourage communication, imagination and curiosity, and lengthen the attention span. Through theatre we are transported into the hearts and minds of the characters, recognising and understanding their actions and feelings which encourages communication and learning empathy all within a constructed, safe environment. Plus, its great fun.

12.01.2022 We had another amazing World Food Market Day Morning tea. The centre tried to purchase fresh Jackfruit but unfortunately we couldnt source any, so we used tinned Jackfruit to make our yummy muffins! A very big thank you to Yi Yi, Finn, Lily.S, Indie, Eden and their families for bringing in food to share with their friends. The children love asking questions about the different foods and of course eating them! This morning we had Anzac biscuits, beef dumplings, Kutsinta (cuchintah) which are Filipino steamed cakes, bacon and zucchini slice and our Jackfruit muffins. 09.01.2022 Last week we had a visit from Zoo to You, and OMG the children's excitement at seeing and interacting with so many native animals! And oh how proud we were at how lovely and gentle all the children were with our little visitors! Children learn best in environments that arouse their curiosity and interest and animals often play a large part in childrens imaginations. A visit from the mobile zoo provides opportunities for children to question and further explore this obsession with animals. Close contact with animals also has other benefits for growing brains, animal visits can help with the learning of empathy, compassion and kindness, they spark conversations and strengthen bonds.

05.01.2022 What a treat we had last week, Suzys family came to visit with their baby goat Issac, who was born on their hobby farm in Kuranda, Issacs mum is a milking goat and his dad is a meat goat. He was so friendly and cute that the children and staff fell in love with him instantly. 05.01.2022 Kathleen has always been an advocate for protecting our children and decided to set up a fundraising page on POLISHED MAN. Polished man supports trauma prevention and trauma recovery programs for children who are at risk of, or who have suffered violence. Please follow the link for more information and help us support this cause.
05.01.2022 Last week our Kindy group started to learn about the Zones of Regulation. The Zones of Regulation are a social and emotional framework that assists children in learning about self-regulation and emotional development. We learnt about the Green Zone and how we might be feeling when we are in this zone. Some of the feelings/emotions we spoke about were happy, calm, relaxed, focused and ready to learn. Some of the activities we did to help us identify and learn about these feelings included: reading books about being happy and discussing what makes us happy, making a poster identifying happy/calm/relaxed emotions, drawing pictures of the things that make us feel happy, practising breathing exercises and meditation to calm and relax us, and making happy faces with play dough.

04.01.2022 Each week the Kindy children verbally share what they did on the weekend with their peers. The aim of this activity is to build on the relationship between home and day care and to develop the childrens confidence and communication and language skills. This week we shared our weekend stories a little differently, we asked the children to draw what they did on the weekend and explain their picture to the group. Drawing is a great form of communication and this learning experience encouraged children to form connections between spoken language and pictures. Drawing is also a form of writing therefore this activity, and similar activities, encourages the development of confidence in this area. Have a look at the amazing pictures some of the children drew!

02.01.2022 The kindergarten have been very invested in birds this year, it started out with 2 of the children building a bird nest and has flowed from there with the building of a bird watching hut, binoculars, bird hunt sheets and a regular bird feeding routine to attract more native birds to our hut.area. Children further enhance a number of skills through these activities, including social skills that are developed through communicating and sharing bird watching and feeding responsibilities with their peers and gross motor skills that are developed when the children role play mimicking the birds flying and swooping with their arms spread as they run around the yard.

01.01.2022 Today we had our Book Week excursion to the TAFE library, for special book reading and activities, we had a lot of fun. A big thank you to the TAFE students and teachers for organising these excursions. We know that reading books out loud to your child helps develop their reading skills long before they are able to read. There are also many additional benefits to a library visit:... Your child gets experience in listening to another adult, including learning how to pay attention to someone who is not their parent or normal caregiver and how to sit quietly while they are speaking; Library story time events can also foster a sense that the library is a special place, helping instil in your child a lifelong love for your local public library DONT FORGET OUR BOOK WEEK DRESS UP DAY THIS FRIDAY
