01.01.2022 Today, we are issuing a wakeup call to Australia. The type 2 diabetes epidemic is overwhelming Australia’s hospitals. We’ll be releasing figures from a new stud...y that found that people with the condition accounted for around one-third of all hospitalisations. The study at Austin Health, a major tertiary health service in Melbourne’s north-east, found that 34% of patients had diabetes (mostly type 2 diabetes). Surprisingly, 5% of these people had silent, undiagnosed type 2 diabetes that was only detected after they were admitted to hospital. Diabetes Australia CEO Professor Greg Johnson believes Australia has to act now to improve early detection of all types of diabetes and reduce the very high rate of diabetes-related admissions to Australia’s hospitals. Diabetes will cripple our health system unless we take urgent, comprehensive action and that’s why we are saying ‘It’s About Time’ people get checked for type 2 diabetes early, and ‘It’s About Time’ our health system got serious about reducing the high rate of hospital admissions for diabetes, Professor Johnson said. 01.01.2022 Please be aware that there is a possible scam targeting people registered with the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS). A person registered with the NDSS r...eceived a call from someone asking if they had an NDSS card. When she replied yes, the caller informed her that she needed to pay a $150 lump sum or $25 per month to continue her membership. The NDSS is free for all eligible individuals. You can report scam calls here: https://www.scamwatch.gov.au/report-a-scam Please be aware and help us share the alert among your network.
