20.01.2022 The National NAIDOC Committee has made the decision to cancel the 2020 National NAIDOC Awards ceremony. The Awards ceremony was scheduled to be held in Mparntwe... (Alice Springs) in November. This decision was not taken lightly and was reached in consultations with the Alice Springs NAIDOC Committee and other stakeholders and partners. The difficult decision was made considering the changing and widespread impacts of COVID-19 and the uncertainty of travel restrictions, quarantining, and physical distancing requirements. There will be no national awards announced in 2020 and we will not be replacing the ceremony with an online or virtual Awards event. An important part of recognising our community achievers is to celebrate the Awards in style, by showcasing the winners together and televising the event in partnership with SBS/NITV. This necessary postponement, however, will allow more time for nominating our deadly achievers in each of the 2021 National NAIDOC award categories. Gudjlabara Indigenous Corporation and their Board of Directors has made a health decision to postponed 2020 Charters Towers NAIDOC events including the Aunty Christine Thomson Memorial Touch Carnival, due to the current health situation unfolding in our country. The NAIDOC celebrations were to be celebrated in July however we have been informed that this health crises could last up to six months. The current restrictions are being put into place and are changing on a daily basis for all Australians. Our priority is keeping our community safe during this health pandemic. Thank you for your support and stay safe during this time.

10.01.2022 NAIDOC 2020 would have been this week but was pushed back to November 8 - 15 because of COVID-19, so lets do some truth telling. Why did NAIDOC come into exist...ence? It was born from struggle. Aboriginal people have been protesting Australia day since the 1920s and William Cooper established the Day of Mourning on the Sunday before Australia Day to protest the callous treatment of our people by the whitemen. In 1955, the govt moved it to the first Sunday in July to suit the NT. The theme of NAIDOC 2020 is Always Was, Always Will Be. This acknowledges and celebrates the fact that our nations story didnt begin with European contact in 1770. You dont need government approval or funding to tell the truth. Its up to us to know the history and continue the struggle to honour our ancestors.
