25.01.2022 To all of our clients, Due to the ongoing and growing risks of Corona Virus, we are implementing some strict, new measures to ensure the safety of clients and staff. - All consultations should be via phone FIRST. ... We understand that during these times, pets will still need Veterinary attention. With that in mind, please call us before you come to the clinic and a Vet or Nurse will help determine exactly what is necessary for your pet. - We are no longer allowing clients to enter the building without first waiting outside to be greeted by a reception staff member. Our usual hours still apply (9-5 Monday to Friday for appointments). No more than one client will be able to enter the building at a time. - If you are unwell - Do NOT come to the clinic. If your pet needs us, we will help make arrangements by phone call ONLY. - If your pet needs medication, please arrange this by phone first and preferably pay over the phone. Wait outside to collect and a nurse will bring it out to you. *Don't wait until your pet has run out of medication to replace it - please give us plenty of notice. * - All routine surgeries (de-sexing, dental cleaning procedures etc) will be postponed. We will let you know when we are starting to book these again. We appreciate your patience and cooperation through this. Curleys Bay Veterinary Hospital

24.01.2022 If you’re leaving your pet home alone on Christmas Day, tire them out with some pre-emptive exercise, such as walks for dogs or toy-chasing for cats. Leave them in a cool, well-ventilated area, with bedding, water and a few toys. Ensure your pet can access toileting facilities if you’ll be gone more than three hours. It helps to spray your pet’s bedding with some calming pheromone spray (Adaptil for dogs, Feliway for cats). Some pets may also enjoy soft background music or TV. Keep your pet happy and occupied with a safe chew treat (such as a stuffed Kong), or a food hunt around the house. If you think your pet will be anxious without you, call us today to discuss safe anti-anxiety medication for your pet.

24.01.2022 If you’ve got your holidays booked and you’re planning to put your pets into boarding whilst you’re away, you need to ensure that your pet is up-to-date with their vaccinations prior to boarding. Canine cough is a common respiratory disease seen in dogs, and can be especially prevalent in situations when dogs are stressed or anxious. Make sure to book your pet in with us for their vaccinations well before you plan to head away.

24.01.2022 Installing a cat scratching post inside your home can be a great way to encourage cats to scratch without ruining your favourite furniture. Scratching posts come in all manner of shapes and sizes - you can even build your own. Scratching behaviour is normal in cats, so providing them with one or more scratching posts will help save your furniture and keep kitty happy.

20.01.2022 It’s important to always ensure your pets have access to fresh drinking water. During warmer weather, pets can quickly become dehydrated, which can lead to heat stress and can be fatal. It is a good idea to provide multiple water bowls in case one gets knocked over, and place them in a shady or protected spot so the water stays cool on a hot day.

19.01.2022 Before offering your pet any festive foods, check first that it doesn’t contain any of these potentially toxic ingredients: - Raisins, sultanas or grapes - Onions or garlic - Chocolate, cacao or caffeine - Xylitol sweetener... - Macadamia nuts Avoid giving your pet any cooked bones to gnaw on (they can put them at high risk of gut obstruction or injury), or fatty foods such as leftover ham (which can trigger pancreatitis in some animals). If you think your pet may have accidentally eaten any of these ingredients, bring your pet in to see us immediately. See more

17.01.2022 For safe summer beach fun with your dog, we recommend: - Checking your beach of choice is dog-friendly. - Bringing a generous supply of fresh water for your dog (plus a bowl). - Checking the sand temperature before leading your pet onto the beach if it’s too hot for you to touch for 10 seconds, it may burn your pet’s paws. - Setting up camp under a tree or beach umbrella.... - Keeping your dog away from any fishing debris or sharp oyster shells. If it’s over 28C and your pet is not heat-tolerant (e.g. a flat-faced or very thick coated breed), it’s safest to keep them home. If you’re unsure, ask our friendly team for advice. See more

09.01.2022 Exercising pets during the heat of the day can result in heat stress and other injuries, such as burnt paw pads. During warmer weather, it can be a good idea to exercise your dog during the cool of the early morning or later in the evening. You can also exercise your pet on grassed areas to ensure they’re protected from the heat of pavements or roads. Always ensure your pet also has access to fresh drinking water after exercise to prevent dehydration.

Fleas will make your pet itchy and uncomfortable, and may trigger secondary skin infections requiring veterinary treatment. A flea infestation in your home can also be difficult to eradicate. Ensure your pet is always up-to-date with a safe, effective flea prevention product. Options include chews and topical treatments for dogs (lasting between one to six months), and tablet or topical treatments for cats (lasting one to three months). Ask us about the best flea prevention options for your pet.
