01.01.2022 Today marks Sam's 31st birthday. This short story, with the simple title, 'Fencing' has been written to mark today. Happy heavenly birthday, Sambo. xx ... Fencing Building new fences is boring and monotonous - a job I describe as a ‘no brainer’. Sam would laugh and rib me about calling it that. In the same category was drafting goats. He knew this so he’d say, We’re going to draft the goats now Mumma. Do you want to come and give us a hand it’s a no brainer. We’d laugh. I would go and do these tasks without thinking too much about them. Being a teaching principal, even in a small school, carried a degree of responsibility and stress - a level which, in my eyes, fencing and drafting goats didn’t reach. For that reason, I didn’t mind helping out now and then. As I look back, calling it a ‘no brainer’ was unfair and demeaning, but luckily Sam had the sort of character that didn’t see these tasks that way. The drafting yards are set up in a funnel-like shape. The goats are yarded in a large back yard and, as they move forward toward the drafting gate, the yards get smaller until they go through single file. Mick always stood at the gate deciding which goats stayed and which went to sale, while Sam’s and my job was to keep them steadily flowing through to him. One day, we were having all sorts of trouble. Goats would stop, baulk, or turn back rather than walk toward the draft. Mick barked suggestions on what was happening, as we were trying to get things flowing again. Sam must have been thinking about this problem because he went off and brought back another large gate that halved the size of the final pen. He twitched it to the fence enough that it would swing open and close and back we went to drafting. This gate worked a treat as it gave the goats little choice but to continue to move forward toward Mick at the end of the draft. Sam’s thinking also saved us when we went fencing. The fence line was about two kilometres and our job that day was to tie the wire to the steel pickets. The five ties for the five wires had already been dropped at the base of the post so it was a matter of threading them through the post holes and twisting them to secure the wire to the post. It wasn’t a long stretch that day, so I suggested to Sam that he start at one end and I at the other and we’d meet in the middle. Sam thought about this then said, No Mumma, we better work together from one end and finish at the other. I liked my suggestion after all, I thought, what could possibly go wrong tying five wires to a steel picket? In the paddock, I always allowed Sam to make the decisions and be the boss. As we neared the end, we noticed that two wires were crossed. Sam smiled. It can happen over a length of fence and not be noticed until the wires are attached to the posts and you reach the end. Sam undid the two wires at the corner, changed their position, and the problem was solved. Without ridiculing me, he said, If we’d started at each end, we’d have this problem in the middle and half the length of these two wires we’d tied, would have to be untied and redone. That’s why we start together. Sensible answer, I thought. Sam didn’t mind tying on wires even by himself. He’d attach his ipod to his arm, put earplugs in and off he’d go quickly getting in a rhythm. Another day I offered to help. It was a long stretch of fencing and the many kilometres in front of us looked daunting. This was when thoughts of ‘boring’ and ‘monotonous’ set in. As Sam and I were about to start he said to me, I becha, Mumma, before we’ve done a few hundred metres, I’ve tied two posts in a row. Sam knew I loved a challenge. Right, you’re on, I said. When tying wires, you should pass each other and do every second post. If one person is slow, the other might tie two in a row. That’s what Sam was aiming for. We started - I tied and watched him. Not far along the fence, I started a post and he had three wires tied on his next one. Damn! I made myself hurry. He walked past me, and I saw the grin on his face. Further on, he had four wires tied as I started a new post. I tied furiously. This time as he passed me, he laughed. After the next one, he completed two full posts to my one. Yah he shouted, I win. We kept this challenge going until the end and I never won. Sam wasn’t silly. By making it competitive, he made it fun and kept me on the job. This meant with two of us, even someone as slow as me, the job got done quicker! See more
