23.01.2022 Authenticity. Sometimes I feel like I have it in spades and it is definitely something I value, so the Adelaide Uni psych students got a dose of it tonight! Speaking at a careers night tonight was something I value. Sharing my journey and the great things about being a rural psychologist is something important to me. But tonight I was exhausted, and my husband ended up having to stay at our other farm, so I was juggling the kids on my own. I was tempted to pull out,... and I actually have no judgement for my past self if I'd chosen to. But I chose to stick with it. I finished feeding the baby 2 minutes before I spoke. I bribed the older two with the last third of a tub of ice-cream. And I got it done. And hopefully I helped a few future psychs know that we can show up, do what's important to us, even if we don't look polished and have wild kids running around in the background.... #authenticity #cultivatepsychology #psychology #psychologistsofinstagram #mumlife #worklifejuggle #iamsawoman #farmlife
23.01.2022 Self- care isn't selfish, it's essential. Check out the @actionhappiness calendars for daily tips to look after your wellbeing. What is something you do for self-care?... (And it doesn't have to include candles, long baths or massages) My self-care today was writing a fairly simple to-do list last night, and actually ticking some off today. #selfcareseptember #actionforhappiness #actforag #wellbeing #farming #farmerhealth #farmingfamilies #ausag #womeninag #agchatoz #agmentalhealth #resilience #drought #stress
22.01.2022 I love this advice from @gottmaninstitute. Their advice around relationships and parenting is spot on Our brains are so good at looking out for what's going wrong or what's gone wrong (especially when it comes to other people) so we need to actively practice looking out for the good stuff!

21.01.2022 So I just did a big intro, that apparently insta didn't like. So here is the bullet point version! I grew up in Adelaide, met my husband at 19 (working at The Woolshed...) and now live on our farm 2 hours from Adelaide we farm approx 17000 acres across 2 main areas, cropping and sheep we have built our farm up ourselves with seriously hard work and long hours... we bought 2 properties in 2018 then hit the worst drought ever, but hopefully are coming out the other side I have 3 gorgeous, energetic and spirited boys (6, 3 and 2 months) I had postnatal depression and needed antidepressant medication and to see a psychologist to be able to come out the other side Every day I live the challenges of trying to have a healthy family and relationship with the pressures of farming, which is why I'm passionate about sharing simple strategies which can help Join me for to make your own harvest survival plan this Thursday 15th oct 10am (acst). 20.01.2022 Thank you to AgriFutures Australia for highlighting my project as the 2020 SA Rural Women's Award Winner. Listening to this has re-affirmed my "Why" for this project, but has actually re-affirmed for me why it's so important for me to practice what I preach and focus on looking after myself first. Things are a little on hold at the moment as I focus on my mental health, my kids and family, and getting through harvest! But I am so excited to continue this journey and go further in 2021
20.01.2022 So it's not amazing, but it's a crop! With another 14ml yesterday and more rain forecast on the weekend we are finally looking at having a harvest again! Which is awesome. But also a little daunting. It's been 3 years since we have really had a harvest and to be honest I've probably forgotten a little bit of the stress and pressure involved. Plus, this year we've got 3 years of catch up to do after the drought. So.... it's got me thinking... Who would be intereste...d in joining me on a session to chat about harvest preparation. We make sure the machinery is all ready, but what about putting in place a plan to look after ourselves and our relationships even during the stress of harvest?? I'm sure we aren't the only ones who go on a holiday after harvest to remember why we love each other ... Let me know if you'd love to join in on a lunch time zoom session to work through some simple strategies we could all use, or tag someone who you think would love to attend. #cultivatepsychology #actforag #agrifutures #ruralwomensaward #farming #harvest2020 #australianagriculture #farmlife #southaustralia #stress #ruralwomen #womeninag #rwdcommunity #farmer #farmingfamilies #ruralwellbeing #lifeonthefarm #marriedtotheland #mentalhealth #healthyfamilies #sawoman

19.01.2022 What advice would you give to your 21 year old self?? In celebration of 21 years of the Rural Women's Award, @agrifuturesau has published a beautiful and inspring book which celebrates the contribution of the award from the viewpoint of the women who have been part of the history. I'm proud to me among this cohort of brilliant women. ... For me, it was an interesting experience to think back over the past 12 years and to reflect on what I could tell my 21 year old self. "Stop doubting yourself...Put yourself in the picture. It is OK to look out for other people, but if you look after yourself first you will have even more energy for everyone and everything that matters to you" Funny... I think I still need to remind myself of that! The book can be downloaded via https://www.agrifutures.com.au//agrifutures-rural-womens-/ I can't wait to get my hardcopy and pour over all the wisdom from the women who have come before me. #AgrifuturesAustralia #Hatsofftoruralwomen #Ruralwomensaward #RuralWomen #WomeninAg #WomeninAgriculture
19.01.2022 Absolutely amazing to see the new growth after 4 years of drought. This ground has been so bare it's incredible that there have been seeds just laying dormant, waiting for the right conditions. Maybe in times of stress and crisis we don't need to focus on growth. Maybe it's a time to bunker down and do what we need to do to get through, so when the conditions are right we can germinate and bloom. Check in on yourself where things are at for you right now? Are the conditio...ns right to focus on growth and challenging yourself? Or is it time to just focus on one foot in front of the other, doing what's most important for you to survive? #mondaymusings #cultivatepsychology #actforag #agrifutures #ruralwomensaward #womeninag #farming #wellbeing #mentalhealth #ruralmentalhealth #ruralwellbeing #RWDcommunity #ruralaustralia #southaustralia
18.01.2022 R U OK? This photo is why I always have mixed feelings about this day. Almost every single post on my feeds today asks this question. This photo was the day of my first psychologist appointment when I was struggling with Postnatal Depression. But, for the 6 months previous if you'd asked me if I was ok, I probably would've said Yep. And in those times when I did say no, it was often accepted and not necessarily acted on because I had a baby who didn't sleep so I must ju...st be tired. Mental health awareness is fantastic. Asking those around you how they are going is important. But we need to be open to the response. We need to normalise that it's ok to not be ok. We need to listen, acknowledge their experience, encourage them to take action and support them to follow up, then check in later. We need to share knowledge and build skills to help people get through the sludge of not ok, to know that there is another side. As well as mental health awareness we need to build mental health skills. For Everyone. Because it can be a very quick and slippery slope between ok and not ok. Between bushfires, droughts, floods, a global pandemic...tough is an understatement for 2020. But don't just post a pic today. Don't just check in today. Check in with your mates every day. Check in with yourself everyday. Do something every day to look after You, you're the only one who can. As well as asking others Are You Ok? We must ask ourselves the same question, and practice being honest with ourselves. Then take action to look after ourselves. If we take care of ourselves then this has a ripple effect to those around you. If you are not ok today, know that those feelings are 100% ok. 2020 has been a S**tstorm for many, and has been a follow on to some really tough years for a lot of people. Whatever you are feeling is ok. But these feelings do change. Think about who is most important to you and then think of one thing you can do to take you towards that. It doesn't have to be complicated, it might be looking at a photo of your family, giving your dog a scratch behind the ears, ringing a friend. Just do one thing that helps in this one moment. Then do one thing in the next moment. And one thing in the next. Sometimes it feels like you can only tackle life moment by moment. That Is Ok! Because it reality, each moment is all we have. And who knows, if you can do something that helps in this moment, your next moment might be different. 17.01.2022 1 in 5 mums and 1 in 10 dads will experience Perinatal Anxiety and Depression. That means someone in your family, someone in your mum's group, someone in your footy team... or even YOU. This week is Perinatal Mental Health Week and the theme is #TellSomeoneWhoCares. It can be easy to think we should have the answers, or be should be able to cope, or that it's just tiredness. But, Perinatal Mental Health is real, it's common, and it's important.... Think about who you have in your circle who you can talk to: your partner, your family, a friend, or wider - your GP. Think about the new mums and dads in your life and remember to check in with them, not just asking "are they a good baby".... There are a heap of great resources and tools available to support expecting and new parents through this amazing, but difficult period, including: www.panda.org.au - PANDA’s National Perinatal Mental Health Helpline 1300 726 306 9am 7.30pm Mon Friday (AEST/AEDT). The Helpline is also open from now until the end of February 2021 on Saturdays 9am 7.30pm. www.howisdadgoing.org.au www.gidgetfoundation.org.au www.mummoodbooster.com MindMum App and Mind The Bump App Most importantly, remember that this time is not just about the baby, it is also about those around the baby! #PANDA2020 #perinatalmentalhealth #psychology #ruralmentalhealth #ruralpsychologist

12.01.2022 This week is Mental Health Week with the theme Every Person Every Community I strongly believe that mental health is for everyone, it's something we all need to care of and in fact when we are going well is when we can start to instil patterns which will help us out in times of struggle. When we are going well may also be a time when we can step up and look out for those in our community who need us. ... Someone once told me "I'm holding space for you while you can't" and that hit so true for what we can do for others when they are struggling. We don't need to solve all the problems, but connection is key. Think about Who is important to you, and for your mental health and theirs, do something today to connect with them #mentalhealthweek #agmentalhealthweek #ruralmentalhealth #farmerhealth #farmfamilies #womeninag #ausag

11.01.2022 Doing "Nothing"... hands up who finds it Really. Hard. Mr D and I had a tough night last night/ this morning and I am so tired. My brain has been fog all day. One of the things that I find hardest about motherhood is letting go of the shoulds and the drive to always be doing "something". Even though I know that growing, raising, feeding a small human and his 2 big brothers is definitely doing something, I still find it hard to just stop. Or to just sit for a few moment...s. But I'm working on it! Is doing "Nothing" something you need to practice sometimes too? #psychologistsofinstagram #motherhood #mentalhealth #farmlife #ruralmentalhealth #selfcareseptember
11.01.2022 To all those farmers across SA and the Eastern states anxiously watching the weather. I'm here with you. When it rains it pours hey! No matter what comes over the next 24-48 hours remember, there is so much in farming that is out of your control. Take small steps to manage what is in your control. Do what you need to get ready for storms around the farm or house. If you do get a lot of rain, maybe use it as some time to stop and reset before harvest starts. ... What will be will be. Whatever emotions come up, just see if you can make space for them and let them be there, kind of like that unwelcome guest at a party. Let them in but give your attention to the stuff that matters. #farmlife #harvest2020 #rainhailfloods #australianag #womeninag #farmfamilies
11.01.2022 Knowing our own stress warning signs can be one of the greatest tools we have in looking out for ourselves. Stress can come on quickly in reaction to a sudden stressful situation, or it can creep up slowly and become chronic - especially when we face ongoing challenges and uncertainty. When stress becomes a slow burn, sometimes we can start to miss our stress warning signs. Take some time to note down what your stress warning signs are, talk about them with your partner, fami...ly or work colleages. It's sometimes easier to see in others what we can't see in ourselves, so chances are the people who care about you also might have some suggestions! Then, build your toolkit to help you manage stress. We can't get rid of the stressors in our lives, but we can take small steps to manage the best we can. Write your warning signs and management plan down - pop it on the fridge, on your phone, or anywhere easily accessible so that your reminders are there when you need them most. When we get stressed, our thinking part of the brain doesn't work so well, so some pre-preparation can be extra helpful! What are some of your stress warning signs? What do you to help manage your stress load? #stress #farmlife #ausag #womeninag #farmingfamilies #ruralmentalhealth #wellbeing #resilience #drought #actforag #psychologytips #farmsafety #lookafteryou #selfcare
09.01.2022 You can do hard things! Confession, I have no idea where this little warrior came from! I found her when I was attempting to clean my office and she now stands proudly at my computer to remind me that "I can do hard things". We are all doing hard things everyday, whether it's juggling a newborn and bookwork, battling the weather and uncertainty, or owning up to making mistakes, or sometimes even just getting out of bed in the morning. ... If you need it, this is your reminder for the day, You Can Do Hard Things!
08.01.2022 What are you listening to at the moment? I'm very much enjoying Matthew McConaughey's memoir "Greenlights". It's inspiring, entertaining, escapist and challenging all at once. Oh and feeling like I'm in a 1 on 1 conversation with Matthew isn't a bad thing either Even worth the listen just to have a giggle at his various aussie accents when he recounts his Australian exchange year. ... What have been the greenlights in your life?

06.01.2022 Just squeezing in, Happy National Ag Day! To all the farmers and their families who work hard every day to put the food on our tables and the fibre on our backs, Thank you! SA's mini lockdown has meant we have had an extra few days helping with harvest. Ag is definitely a family business for us, but hot days, frazzled kids, machinery breakdowns and long long hours can make it testing at times. Approx 1 week in to harvest and A lot more to go, so I'm trying to remem...ber to stop and notice the good, take a breath, and remember that tv between farm work won't break my kids! 06.01.2022 I'm thrilled and honoured to be named a Semi Finalist for the 2020 Prime Super Agricultural Innovation Award in the South Australian Community Achievement Awards. 06.01.2022 Why did the chicken cross the yard? Well... on our farm it is usually for 2 main reasons. If I'm walking across the yard, our chooks will race towards me as I'm usually taking the chook scraps to their yard. If my boys are outside, the chooks are usually racing away from them - unfortunately our chooks are frequently "rounded up" by my enthusiastic 3 and 6 year olds. What does this have to do with anything?? The chooks are behaving exactly like animals do, and consequently, h...ow we do as humans. As humans/animals, we have two main drivers to our behaviours... To move TOWARDS the things that are important to us and to move AWAY from things that we want to avoid. For the chooks this means moving TOWARDS food (me), and AWAY from danger (my sons). And for the chooks this will always only be about things that they can see or sense with their 5 senses. For us as humans, we have an additional advantage/disadvantage. LANGUAGE. Our capacity for language and thought means that we not only move away and towards things within our outside world, we also move towards and away from things within our inside world. So instead of just reacting to our outside world, we may get caught up in our mental thoughts/images/memories, even the sensations and urges that happen under our skin - and act to get away from that stuff. Often, that ends up taking us away from what's important to us. If you've read this far - my challenge to you today is to practice NOTICING. With everything you do today, just NOTICE, does this take me TOWARDS who and what is important to me, or am I doing this to move AWAY from uncomfortable stuff. #CultivatePsychology #ACTforAG #RuralAustralia #SouthAustralia #Goyder #Burra #Ruralwellbeing #Ruralresilience #rurallife #farmlife #womeninag #womeninbusiness #ruralpsychologist #psychologistsofinstagram #IamSAwoman

03.01.2022 Edit to add: in reflection I wanted to clarify that it's important to take action towards what's most important to us, taking one small step guided by our values. Sometimes when we are overwhelmed it can feel like we have limited choices, but it can help to pause and check in with what is one small step is that you can do, to help in this moment right now. My word for the year was FAMILY, however I think 2020 had different ideas and one of the biggest word of the years f...or 2020 would be UNCERTAINTY. Uncertainty is hard. As humans we don't like it because it can (and sometimes does) mean danger. At the moment, pretty much all of us across the globe are living in some level of uncertainty. Whether you are in Victoria facing Level 4 lockdown...Whether you are in other parts of Australia not knowing where COVID-19 will pop up next...Whether you are a farmer waiting uncertainly for any rain in the next few days or weeks... Uncertainty has become part of our everyday. So, we have a choice. We can either let our minds get hooked into the autopilot of fear and uncertainty, often acting in ways that take us away from what is most important to us - especially when we get hijacked by our feelings. OR - we can start making small choices every single moment and every single day. There are 3 simple (but not necessarily easy) things we can do to manage uncertainty. 1. Acknowledge what is going on - and acknowledge what is out of our control. This includes the situations around us, what other people do or don't do, and even our own thoughts and feelings are out of our control a lot of the time. 2. Focus on what is in our control. At the end of the day there is one thing we can control - and that is our actions. The choices we make and the way we choose to be. 3. Do Something - Take action towards what matters to you. This doesn't have to be huge. - It may be small actions of maintaining a daily routine even when in lockdown. - Getting enough sleep to fuel your body - Connecting with those you care about - Unplugging for a little while - Stepping back from constantly monitoring the weather forecasts If you do need extra support at the moment there are a number of sources of help available: Lifeline - 13 11 14 Regional Access (for Rural South Australians) - 1300 032 186 Virtual Psychologist - 0488 807 266 #cultivatepsychology #actforag #mentalhealth #farmerhealth #farmlife #rurallife #ruralwellbeing #farmingfamilies #drought #resilience #covidmentalhealth #support
03.01.2022 Spring is here. A new month, a new season. Time to reflect, plan and set some goals. Values can serve as a compass to guide our actions and choices. They are not set in stone but are patterns of behaviour which we can choose to do. Have you ever tried a value on?... We all have certain core values, but we can choose values which we want to cultivate and grow. My value which I'm going to "try on" for September is Savour. For me this is a reminder to stop, be present, just sit in what is. To savour the beauty and simplicity of moments, to savour the joy and contentment. So that even in the tough moments, the times when I want to pull my hair out, I can practice choosing what I want to savour. What value can you try on? You might try a value for an hour, for a day, for a week. #values #ACTFORAG #acceptanceandcommitmenttraining #cultivatepsychology #rurallife #farmlife #farmfamilies #farmerhealth #mentalhealth #resilience #psychologytips #psychologist
03.01.2022 1 year ago, 5 years ago, 10 years ago. Nothing like a bit of reflection to give perspective on the journey I've been on. 1 year ago...we were heading on a plane to a glorious week in cairns. Thankfully we did as I'm not sure when we'll be going anywhere again for a while! Thanks Covid. 5 years ago... head deep in 1 year of sleep deprivation torture. Babywearing was my life saver but when I look back of photos of this time I remember just how much I was really strugglin...g and how hard it was to actually acknowledge it on the outside. 10 years ago...ahhh the bliss and innocence of 20s life netball trips, lots of going out with friends. I was halfway through my Masters in Clinical Psychology. Sometimes it feels like everyday is the same and that nothing has changed over the years, but in reflection I'm pretty proud at what I've done... Completed my Masters in Clinical Psychology Gotten engaged, then married Learnt that being married takes so much more than just signing that piece of paper Had 3 gorgeous babies and watched them grow Survived 6 years of waking through the night Bought 3 farm properties which grew our farm business and the demands on us substantially On the farm had hailstorms, bushfire, and 3 years of drought Took part in the #NRWC Canberra muster Started the Goyder SACWA branch was part of an awesome team organising the 2020 Thriving Women Conference 2020 SA Agrifutures Rural Women's Award winner survived the rollercoaster of life with all the ups and downs along the way! 8 Phew! 02.01.2022 Connections of Courage... I wasn't born a rural woman but I'm proud as anything to call myself one now. Today is International Day Of Rural Women and I have loved the absolute celebration of rural women and the roles they play. I truly see rural women as the backbone of rural communities. ... From the local friends I've formed and the chats and school drop off. To the ladies who have helped me and formed our executive team in getting Goyder SACWA up and running. To all the women who hold so many roles in the committees and community groups. To the kind, caring and fun women I've worked with over the past 8 years The Connections of Courage run strong through so many rural women's networks I'm proud to be part of. I was a participant in the @nrwcnetwork 2018 Canberra Muster and still seek support from an amazing cohort of women from this experience. I've been involved with the WoTL team and was thrilled to be part of an amazing committee for the Thriving Women 2020 conference, which kicked off 2020 with a bang. These women still inspire, mentor and lift me up. As the 2020 SA Agrifutures Rural Women's Award winner one of the most amazing parts has been joining a cohort of incredible women. The SA alumni have swept me up under their wings @plantaseedforsafety encouraged me to submit my original application. I have an awesome national cohort who are doing incredible things in such diverse areas. 01.01.2022 Sometimes life gives you exactly what you need, right when you need it. Celebrating NAIDOC Week, Smiling Mind has released a beautiful Self Compassion guided exercise by Uncle Jack Charles. This is hands down one of my most favourite guided meditations I have done so far (and I've done a few) I would encourage everyone to take 10 minutes of their day to listen to the exercise either via the website https://www.smilingmind.com.au/ or on the app.... 10 minutes is not all that long to give yourself some care and recharge your batteries #NAIDOCWeek2020 #alwayswasalwayswillbe
01.01.2022 What do you choose to focus on? This is my view a lot of the time at the moment from my chair where I feed my newborn. And it has reminded me just how important perspective is. And choice.
