18.01.2022 3 LESSONS LEARNT COACHING 200 OLDER PEOPLE TO ACCESS ZOOM SUPPORT GROUPS We spoke with Dorothy Yiu, Manager at The Chinese Cancer and Chronic Illness Society, about how her small organisation coached their older clients to access online support groups. We asked Dorothy what advice she had for other leaders in aged care services.... 1 The most important thing is the commitment of your staff or volunteers. 1 staff member guided 12 volunteers to become digital coaches. Each coach went on to support 10 clients. They also mentored the rest of the volunteers. 2 Don't be afraid that older people can’t learn because they have all these barriers. 3 It's a matter of practise, an ongoing process so that the clients keep doing it and keep practising and they finally learn it." The digital coaches supported 200 clients to access the online support groups. It wasn’t easy, it took patience, resilience and repetition. The Society runs 10 Zoom support groups a week with 12 participants per group. They hold health and wellbeing seminars that attract 45-65 participants. If you’d like more info about digital inclusion check out our Digital Inclusion Practice Guide. http://bit.ly/digital-inclusion-practice-guide #DiversityInclusionGoodPractice #DiversityInclusion The Chinese Cancer and Chronic Illness Society

11.01.2022 This diversity & inclusion good practice shoutout is for NARI. It highlights the importance of considering culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities in research. A few months ago the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) and partners released their CALD Dementia Research Action Plan to increase CALD inclusion in dementia research. ... People from CALD backgrounds make up a 3rd of Australia’s older population but they’re under-represented in dementia research. This has the potential to lead to less than optimal care. The Action Plan includes research priorities and guiding principles identified to increase inclusion of people from culturally diverse backgrounds in dementia research and improve dementia health and care for all Australians. #DiversityInclusionGoodPractice #DiversityandInclusion #AgedCare

10.01.2022 This diversity & inclusion good practice shoutout is for Uniting. A few weeks ago we attended the launch of Uniting's Inaugural Diversity & Inclusion Strategy. The event was held on Zoom with over 200 participants from around Australia. We saw an impressive commitment by Uniting's leadership to diversity and inclusion for their workforce, clients and communities.... The strategy document lays out Uniting’s 3-year roadmap for diversity and inclusion. It's an informative and inspiring read for leaders in aged care looking to progress the diversity and inclusion journey of their organisation. We particularly like the 7 pillars of activity: 1 Inclusive leadership 2 Cultural safety and respect 3 Community and visibility 4 Talent pipelines, retention and development 5 Client engagement and empowerment 6 Strategic partnerships 7 Measurement and accountability You can check out the strategy PDF here http://bit.ly/uniting-strategy-pdf

09.01.2022 It’s important for older people to express their opinions in their preferred language Fronditha Care often post content that shows the perspectives of the older people they support. We love this video because it’s sharing the wisdom of consumers in their preferred language. Culturally inclusive feedback is important. A one-size-fits-all approach can lead to exclusion of voices from culturally and linguistically diverse older people. ... We have released our Culturally Inclusive Feedback Practice Guide.
