15.01.2022 #repost @hellenic_museum . As part of the Hellenic Museum’s permanent collection, @pichiavo’s Renegades must be viewed in person; a powerful and immersive encounter offering viewers of all ages, races and genders messages of strength, courage and the power of imagination. It is a series Australia is fortunate to call its own. @alexiapetsinis for @ico_n Whilst many of us will be only able to experience these works from the comfort of home for now, the message rings clear and true. #hellenicmuseum #art #commission #streetart #pichiavo #mythology #greekmythology #artists #urbanmythology #melbourne
11.01.2022 Tuesday Treasure time! To some people Penny Byrne is a widely respected and highly sought after ceramics conservator. To others she is a subversive political c...eramicist. Byrne is the first to admit the irony between working to preserve the ceramic objects in her care as a conservator, and the hybridised monsters she creates from found porcelain figurines in her art practice. In both contexts, however, it is her skill that makes her work so impressive. At first glance, Byrne’s artworks are well-formed figurines in traditional arrangements. Yet on closer inspection, they are revealed to be dark and humorous political artworks. Byrne’s satirical viewpoint confronts a number of contemporary political, social and environmental issues that present an ongoing inquiry into popular culture and international politics. Byrne is particularly interested in the influence of humanity on the environment, and contemporary social and political issues. Byrne’s training as a ceramics conservator has also strongly informed her practice. She works primarily with found materials, meticulously manipulating and reconstructing vintage ceramic figurines. While Byrne buys many of her ceramic objects online, she works exclusively with mass-produced collectables rather than more valuable antiques. Byrne first developed her interest in collectable ceramics as a child when her mother owned an antique store in regional Victoria. She has suggested that the use of fragile ceramics in her work deliberately contradicts the strong political messages that are evident within her practice. The Four Horsemen of the 21st Century Apocalypse (2009) illustrates how her brilliant technical skills create seamless links between different porcelain figurines. The transformations are deceptively simple, but precisely executed. This particular piece is apocalyptic in its vision and experimental in its materiality. As the title suggests, it tackles the big issues facing the globe in the 21st century, which the artist identifies as shortages of water, oil and food, and overpopulation. The work taps into contemporary concerns around climate change and the vulnerability of the environment. Each horse and its rider have been customised to reflect the four apocalyptic threats of the title. To make her point, the artist has chosen to use obvious and kitsch representations. It is precisely this contradiction between the elegance of replica antique porcelain, and Byrne’s subversive transformations, which make her ceramic pieces so engaging and effective. 01.01.2022 We are finding a new appreciation for our homes during isolation, reflected in Jenny Watson’s ‘House’ 1978. In our 2016 exhibition, My Geelongour Gallery, T...orquay born musician Mia Dyson nominated this work as her favourite work of art in the Gallery collection, explaining: I chose Jenny Watson’s 'House', because it evokes for me both childhood and a child-like vision of life in squaresfolded up and unfolded. It’s so much an image of my childhood: backyard, a plain house, garden hose, concrete steps, but through the lens of a child, the dull becomes surreal, and a landscape for imagination. I love this work because it speaks to the Australia that is inescapably part of my being. Do you have a favourite work in our Collection? Image: Jenny Watson ‘House’ 1978, coloured pencils.
