17.01.2022 Conversations around counting beats in percussion to work out what the timing is, or how to count while playing can be really insightful. For instance, some feedback provided is along the lines of "6/8 rhythms are played with six beats in a bar".Fair enough, thats the general theory. But when playing or listening to say traditional West African rhythms or musical arrangements, that is not always obvious and a fixed focus on this can be a throw-off. Popular locally-as in the M...aning and Great Lakes region of NSW, are rhythms on the djembe originating from Guinea, West Africa. They are predominantly in 6/8 time. The same can be said for Eastern African rhythms and arrangements in 6/8 as well. The count is done in sets of threes as opposed to sixes. It is clearer in counts of three than six as the emphasis is generally on the first, third and sixth beats. One can generally just play those three beats and create a great feel in time with the general rhythm. I habitually emphasize the third and sixth on a downbeat anyway.and that provides me with a metronome as well.... For an example of what these thoughts are about, check out an arrangement called Kothbiro by Ayoub Ogada or a Guinean rhythm called Yankadi played actual Guineans. The latter is of course very popular locally though i have generally witnessed the first part of five being played at local events and drum circles... See more

02.01.2022 The importance of holding the beat...there’s an how to involved and it varies from player to player. Using a bass or repetitive beat/note is one way to do it. Or as we prefer counting the time in your head with beats that are not necessarily obvious to the viewer/listener.
