09.01.2022 When someone talks about African drumming the mind often conjures up mental pictures of dark skin, brightly coloured garments, big wide smiles and DJEMBE. Let us introduce you to two of our favourite drums, SEWRUBA and TAMA.. Your mentors, Foday Camara and Amadou Kalissa are accomplished musicians with both drums and if you are EXTREMELY passionate they can not only teach you to play and explain the drums' significance in West African tradition.... but guide you in CREATING y...our very own sewruba or tama. Ahhhh but which is which we hear you ask??? Happy researching!! One Love https://youtu.be/z1MjmggD0wU

07.01.2022 For those who may be planning October holidays in Flores for diving, snorkelling, flying fox island, trekking or caving...why not throw in some djembe or African dance tutoring. We can offer a full camp of 10 days intensive, 4 hours per day for drum, and 2 hours daily for dance, or alternatively a few hours with you and your friends. This will give you the skills to impress your friends as you dance and play along to your favourite tunes! Flores is renowned for its beautif...ul white beaches, clear turquoise waters and friendly locals. In the most part, untouched by the outside world, the food is fresh and organic, a rare commodity in today's landscape! The common religion is Catholic and the island was first 'discovered' by the Portuguese. The name Flores means Flowers. For the holiday anthropologist there is the archeological site where, in 2003 the remains of floriensis man was unearthed. 3 feet 6 inches in stature this discovery was soon given the name "the Hobbit". There are hot springs, waterfalls and traditional dances in villages for those who wish to enjoy the country side of this amazing island. The Komodo dragon can be found on a small island named Rinca which is a 2 hour boat ride from our camp headquarters Varying levels of accommodation can make your stay as simple or as luxurious as you choose! Dundunkan and the Culture Keepers combine to bring a drum and dance camp to this tropical location. The dates in October are to be confirmed as is the cost but you can register your interest to receive updated information. See more

04.01.2022 THE MAROONS OF JAMAICA (CULTURE KEEPERS OF WEST AFRICAN CULTURE IN JAMAICA) Maroons were escaped slaves. They ran away from their Spanish-owned plantations when the British took the Caribbean island of Jamaica from Spain in 1655. The word maroon comes from the Spanish wordcimarrones, which meant mountaineers. They fled to the mountainous areas of Jamaica, where it was difficult for their owners to follow and catch them, and formed independent communities as free men and...Continue reading

02.01.2022 So late January early February The Culture Keepers and DunDunKan are collaborating once again to bring you a 'Djembe Making Workshop' in the heart of the Riverlands in beautiful South Australia. The setting is rural with river frontage. Accommodation will be camping or for those early birds that want a little more comfort, there are rooms in the property house. First you can have a friendly 20 minute chat with one of the facilitators to determine the most suitable size, ski...n, rope for your new djembe. This will be determined by what you will be using your djembe for and the sound you want to achieve. From here the fun begins! You will learn about the voice of the djembe, how to choose a skin for the sound you want, how to tune your djembe and everything you will need to know to maintain your new masterpiece. The choice of varnish and if you want to carve your own design will be extras and may take a little longer so think about this and advise us before the date. This workshop will have limited spaces so please provide contact details and we can keep you updated as this workshop progresses. See more

02.01.2022 Okay, so with a lot of brain storming and talking and more thinking and laying parameters and more talking we have decided on a name for the collaboration of DUNDUNKAN and THE CULTURE KEEPERS. It had to be something descriptive to cover the work we do, it had to be a name that would say what we did in lay mans terms, it had to be catchy and above all else, it had to fit easily into a banner... So the unveiling is here! CULTURE KAN. Snappy huh? It is under this banner we will be performing workshops of all kinds!
