24.01.2022 If only these books could talk... Imagine the people they've seen and the conversations they've heard.
23.01.2022 Last week we saw the announcement of new drink driving laws giving NSW police the power to issue an immediate three-month licence suspension notice and fine for novice, special or lowrange drinkdriving offences. This has been justified by the NSW Government on the basis they will reduce the pressure on the states court system.
22.01.2022 A peep over the shoulder of Shane never reveals the same thing. Each case or matter he handles is completely different. His day bounces between district court for a criminal matter to a bank for the purchase or sale of a property and then back to the office for a family law conference. No two days are the same!

21.01.2022 In these uncertain times, one absolute certainty is our mortality, albeit hopefully later rather than sooner. It is therefore important to have your affairs in order through the preparation of a Will. A Will is a legal document which sets out who will receive your property and possessions when you die.... When you have a valid Will, you give yourself the best chance of making sure your assets go where you want them to. If you die without a valid Will (referred to as dying intestate), the rules of determine how your assets are to be distributed. Usually, this means all your assets will pass to your spouse. If you do not have a spouse, the order of relatives who are eligible to inherit is children, parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins. However, the situation becomes more complex if you have a legal spouse and a de facto spouse (i.e. you have separated and have a new unmarried partner), or if you have children from different relationships. Further, if you die without a Will and without eligible relatives, your estate will pass to the State. The intestacy rules usually only let your family members inherit from you so having a valid Will is essential if you want to leave gifts to friends or charities. To complicate things even further, in our modern society, there is an ever-increasing rate of blended families, a family consisting of a couple, children they may have had together and children from previous relationships. The complexities involved in drafting a Will that appropriately addresses the competing interests in such cases cannot be overstated. Our experience in this area and the capacity to draw upon the advice of a specialist Barrister means you can feel comfortable that your wishes can be fulfilled, and the risk of contest being significantly reduced.

01.01.2022 Every now and then, a road trip beckons for Shane and his youngest daughter to travel to far flung parts of the country to compete at equestrian events. The endless hours of travel are cherished as time to catch up with what is happening in the world of young teenagers. Usually to be told he doesn't have a clue

01.01.2022 Do you know the meaning behind the scales of justice? Most believe that it is an "eye for an eye" concept but, in fact they are a symbol of measurement of the strength of either side of a case - a balancing of the evidence if you will. They are usually seen held by Lady Justice who typically wears a blindfold (to represent impartiality), holds a sword (to depict authority held by the judicial system) and wears a toga (a symbol of the status that the legal system holds). Her presence and meaning dates back to Ancient Roman times. And there is your fun fact for the week!
